DD, whatever insult you’re coming up with, I’ll respond later. I gtg for now.
But if you want to say Nigger with no consequences, go out into the world and try it. Exercise your right to ignore common sense and common decency.

If you are being serious, I said earlier I choose not to use that word or other insults because my mother taught me better. I haven’t in any way supported the use of terms like that.
Oh, but free speech right… well… you seem intellectually narrow minded, have horrible reading comprehension problems, comic books are lame, and wool is about the worst clothing material known to man.
How did I do?

Intellectually narrow minded, yes. Horrible reading comprehension, not true. I just hate reading a 2 paragraphs of bullshit when people can say what they feel in one sentence. Some comic books are lame, I agee. Wool…umm…ok.

Okay, the readers digest version of my view is this:
Why are racial insults special? Why should special emphasis (legal, social, public) be put on removing racial insults/terms from our vernacular? I don’t see a difference and I don’t see them as any worse than all the other juvenile insults people throw around.

Yeah I want to believe this. But when was the last time this was said either to you or at you. I would love to beleive that I’m above a word and that I could look past ignorance. But that does still have a stigma with me and If said either to me or in my presence It would piss me off. However anything typed is just brushed away like lint.
I hear “fuckin affirmatice action nigger” all the time. In the higher level classes in my field there arent many Blacks people…there’s only like 30 in the crowd of hundreds.

nigger, using a derogatory fashion is general and insult attacking the color of a persons skin.
"And that reply seemed to be for X since I’m not sure how you feel that word would an does not reflect just as bad on me if said in public not around a group who all look like myself. "
Because that simply isn’t true. consequences, socially, for employment, public scrutiny, and even legally are not the same (discrimination suits).
I know you said you aren’t on the radio, but hell, Imus about got canned for using the word nappy.
I simply do not understand the focus on this one type of insult/terminology over so many others. What is so special about it?
Because based on who you are WE BOTH can be sued for numerous differnt words. I could just as easly be sued for saying “Chicks or Dames” in the work place. I thought we were talking about
Why a word can affect a group differntly if used by someone outsid that said group.
Imus is a public figure and Public figures put there life out there to be judged for good or bad.
I’m not talking about comedians, Politicians, radio jocks or any of that ilk. I was putting it as close to the grass roots as I could.
Many words affect people of differnt cultures or back ground based on there history with that word. I’m telling you how this affects myself and the people I know and I’m hearing about (not you so much) how this happens to people on TV or something like that.
The OP wanted to know why its differnt if he said it in front of a group of Black people than If I said it. BECAUSE when they look at me they see the same history and they don’t when its said outside of our culture.
If I walked into a room of Holocust Victims I would feel odd saying thing about people in ovens or making jokes about the Nazi’s. Even if they who had lived thru or had realitives live thru this Did tell the jokes as a way of dealing with the history of what happend.
Take the above statement and put anything in there a Group of Rape Victims or Burn Victims. Or any group that share a history that I’m not a part of. I can’t talk or joke like they do to each other because I’m not THEM. I don’t share there History, there pain there past.

So when you listen to rap music do you say “Bitch” lines with no problem, or do you first make sure you’re not singing in the presence of any females??
Rap music is influenced by the Ghetto, and in the Ghetto you can say just about any cuss or derogetory term you want in casual conversation and nobody says a thing, so long as you’re not meaning to attack someone with those words. Listen to the way gangsters and cholos talk, it’s fuk this… fuk that… this bitch. this faggot… Nigga… kracka… ALL DAY LONG. Like I said I don’t say the word nigga or nigger, but I will sing along to a rap song that says the word, and I’d openly laugh at anyone who got offended by it. Rap is FILLED with derogetory and offensive language as is the speech of most people living in the ghetto, if you’re worried about offending people you’re best off not rapping along with any gangster/ hood inspired rap music. Stick to Will Smith CD’s.
doubleduce pretty much summed up what my whole point was. its racist to say nigger but what REALLY seems racist to me is that only black people can say the word. And no i dont want to use it, but every time i hear it im reminded that im not allowed to. I just know im gonna have a freudian slip somewhere…“no dont guard him, hes nigger than u…wait i meant bigger.”
then ill get my ass kicked, cuz thats what happens when white people say it right? more than any other word, why is the accepted reaction a surefire ass beating of whoever said it? but its cool to call me “that whiteboy”? ive started calling random black dudes “black boy”. not exactly as offensive as nigger, but usually doesnt go over well. theres a massive double standard.
i dont know how to do the quote things. im relatively new and i lurk. but theres been a shit ton of comments along the lines of “just go ahead and say it in public JUST SEE WHAT HAPPENS!” i never wanted to say it. i just think if people are gonna bitch about it then everyone should eliminate it from their vocabulary or no one. and the kids my age at the Y?
i can pretty much guarantee u they arent saying nigga with a sense of respect for its history or personal experience of how the word developed. Its unlikely that any of them, given their age and the well deserved fear of white people saying the word within earshot of a a group of black people, have ever been called nigger out of a place of hate.
and if ive repeated some things people said, my bad i just woke up. how do u do the quote thing?

And he never even mentioned race.

Racial history is not a real thing or experience. Rape victims, burn victims est. have real, common experiences. There isnâ??t a parallel there. You feel the pain of the past no more than I do.
Not all black people have a common history. Period. Even if you live in the US and are of a similar age, life experience can vary wildly. Does a rich black guy live the “black” experience? Does he have a common thread with the poor black kid living in a shotgun house with a dirt floor and suffering from rickets in Mississippi? (yes, Iâ??ve actually seen kids with rickets in MSâ?¦ It literally makes me cry thinking about it)
It is the color of your skin. It isnâ??t who you are. They are entirely separate things. This “common history” based on skin color is a farce.

Yeah How Old are you? I see Kids doing crazy shit all the time, so what.
If and I’m saying IF you are an adult. I don’t care if you are black/White/Asian. You are going to learn that Yes. There are words that you should JUST NOT say. Since I’m now repeating myslef and I’m sure you must have me on ignore by now.
“i dont share their history, their pain, their past.” what pain? its 2010. its really fuckin ironic but ive probably experienced more racism than most the black kids my age. im aware that this statement is ridiculous-bein the only white dude in a competitive basketball environment may be a bit uncomfortable, but it hardly amounts to anything. but im sayin its not like these kids have firsthand experience of havin to use separate restrooms or anything. so please explain what sense of shared pain black people in their early 20’s have, since apparently the use of nigga helps to soften the harsh memories of…what? affirmative action?

good point bout the africans…coincidentally, there was an african dude playin ball too, and he was one of the main perpetrators. he shared none of the (very questionable) sense of history as his american counterparts, but SOLELY BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN it was cool for him to spout off nigga this nigga that.

If someone called me Nigger, my first reaction would be confusion.
“Did this white boy just call me Nigger? Does he want m to die?”
But once I get the cobwebs out my brain, I would commence beating him to the floor.
Another problem I have is white kids listening to rap music and thinking they can say the “Nigga” lines with no problem. That could easily lead them to an ass whipping down the line.
DAMN…so now i cant say certain words, but i ALSO cant sing along to certain types of music??? well, small price to pay for not getting my ass whooped, i guess.
before i carry on, i should probably stop to ask whether or not this was sarcastic…cuz if it was then ill shut up
“Are you saying that I can’t sympathize with Uncle Tom because I’m white?”
Now there is an insult I cannot understand. The character Uncle Tom was a great man. I can’t believe anyone whose actually read the book could use him as an insult. So, common history man, could you explain that one?
