Gratuitous Use of the N Word?

My first paragraph was just copying and pasting your reasons for not using something and pointing out that it in no way relates to the statistical evaluation you set forth prior for using racial judgments. You are contradicting your previous argument, or at least altering it.

I’m not denying anything. But there were several assertions you made that were false.

You really want to get into me getting called nigger? Ok. While driving through baptist town in greenwood Mississippi with my now wife, I’ve had a group of black teenagers run out into the street blocking our car and shout “niggers” at us. So, yes, I’m fucking serious. Scared the shit out of her. What was my proper reaction to that term? Do they “own” that word because there ancestors were literally slave cotton pickers?

Or since me and my woman getting called nigger is apparently so comical for you and X, how about this? I was rear ended by a kid. The kid took off and ran. I called the cops. A black officer shows up. Officer talks down to me and refers to me as “boy” throughout the encounter and threatens to write me tickets even though I was the one that got hit.

Yes, I’m serious.

Lastly, because you’ve apparently taken it that way, I’m not arguing that I should get to use it. I’ve said it multiple times. I don’t like it, I can’t even remember ever saying it. I find it rude and offensive. But why can’t I get offended for the slaves of the past as much as a black guy?
First, you did not such thing and I did not contradict myself. Maybe you’re misunderstanding me or I’m not as eloquent as I think in making my point.

If you’re going to claim that “several assertions I made were false” you should explicitly reference those statements and then rebut their falsity. Simply stating “several statements you made were false” gets us nowhere.

What were you to do when the teenagers ran into the street and called you nigger? Seriously? Let’s do a thought experiment here: What if a group of teenagers ran into the street and while blocking your car called you one of any of dozens of offensive and intimidating names? I’m guessing your wife would still be scared. Are you really implying your poor wife was scared because they called you niggers? C’mon. What’s your reaction to be? I guess your reaction should be whatever you feel comfortable with when a group of teenagers runs into traffic, blocks your cars and tries to intimidate you. I don’t think there is a rule book there. You can (1) continue to slowly move your car and if a motherfucker don’t want to move, he / she can become a hood ornament; (2) you can get out and commence to street sweeping the lil fuckers out of the road; (3) you can call the police and wait for help, only using option (1) above as your last resort. I guess I’m not really moved by the color of the kids in this instance or their choice of the word nigger. And I didn’t say it was comical. But I still can’t believe you’re using it as the crux to make your argument.

Next example. The cop in question simply appears to be a cocksucker. Well guess what…alot of cops are cocksuckers. Yours just happened to be black. He called you boy because he could. And how can we be sure your attitude in no way shape or form contributed to the incident? Maybe you took offense to a black officer calling you boy. Would you feel as offended if an asshole white cop called you boy? Is “boy” that hurtful to you? Or is it because the officer was black? Shit happens. Even if it were a racist incident, it’s the world we live in. We live among assholes. I’m not sure what if anything it has to do with your point, and if you ever had a point, it’s really not any more clear than when you started.

As for your closing remarks, you’re certainly welcome to be as offended by its use as anyone else. But yes, blacks do “own” the word - they certainly paid for it.
You are so missing my point. Yes, I would react the same way if the kids had been white. Yes I would react the same way if the officer was white. You are the one claiming race should be part of context, that’s why I included it. Yeah, shit happens. Shit happens to everybody. i let it roll off my back, which is once again my point.

So a black guy born and raised in south Africa payed for it huh? How exactly did professor X pay for it?

Initially you were claiming that racial bias do to statistical probability wasn’t racism. Now, it’s only okay if it doesn’t really hurt someone’s feelings.

LOL. So you think I haven’t experienced a large amount of racism? From day one my parents raised me to be aware that the opinion was out there and that I had to overcome it. Unless the black guy was born after maybe 1985, you would have to be fucking retarded to think they experienced no significant racism in their lives growing up.

Being followed around stores at the Galleria in Houston was a normal day out for us.

You’re pretty mixed up. I said making judgments on appearance and first impression is what we do socially - all humans the world over do this. I stated that those judgments, based on our experiences, usually are fairly accurate - and I gave examples of such judgments and their likely accuracy. The foregoing in does not imply “racial bias” - that’s your word. I explicitly DENY racial bias simply on the basis of noticing someone’s race or appearance. You are claiming bias at the mere notice of someone’s skin color and any assumptions that may follow. Sorry sir, this is not bias. And because it’s not “racial bias”, it cannot be racism as that word is properly defined.

And nowhere did I state racism was okay as long as it didn’t hurt someone’s feelings. I told you in my first reply that you and I disagree as to what constitutes racism. I suggest you go back and read that definition and consider it further. Nowhere did I put forth an argument that could be construed as any conditional acceptance of “racism” as that term is properly defined - not defined by you.

“no equivalent white experience or hateful word used towards whites that has the same gravity.”
false. This is entirely subjective. It may be your opinion and how you feel, but any other opinions to the contrary are just as valid.

“American whites were not subject to slavery and a long history of discrimination”
False for a number of reasons. There were some white American slaves or worse indentured servants. Next, speaking on ancestral terms yes, whites have had long periods of slavery discrimination and oppression, it just depends on where you are arbitrarily drawing a line in the sand in regards to time, but suffice to say, slavery is in absolutely no way unique to the black race. This of course neglects to even mention that the races are mixed and now you have to come up with a level of “blackness” that qualifies you for the club. Lastly, if you aren’t talking ancestry, no one in this thread has been subject to the type of treatment you are talking about.

“The word nigger is pregnant with history and hate. “Typical white male” has no such connotation.”
ever seen the hatred spewing out of reverend write or the black panthers when talking about the evil white man? I think there is some pretty good hatred behind it.

“It may be a stereotype, but it’s not hateful and it doesn’t hurt.”
Again, purely subjective.

“Even “Cracker” and other such terms have no such hateful history.”
In some context it absolutely does.

OH BOOO HOOOOO!

You’re so right. You know just how those slaves felt.

Wait, I got followed around the mall as a teen. Sweet, I know what its like to have been a slave.

But to more correctly point out the error of your post, I never claimed you weren’t discriminated against. I only have an issue with you somehow thinking you know my life and I can’t know anything about yours.
DoubleDuce wrote:

I’m not sure I am. I said context is important as it concerns this thread…and this thread was about the use of the word “nigger” or its variations, most notably “nigga” - as if dropping the E and R magically makes it a different word but I digress :). You’re injecting different scenarios into this and I’ve responded to those specifically. You’ve introduced “racism” and “bias”. And given that race has nothing to do with the experiences you posted, what is your point?

And yes, X did pay for it. Racism still exists. He cannot hide being black like Jews could hide being Jewish, and so forth. If someone harbors racists feelings towards blacks (and they do), he cannot hide from that. And the fact of the matter is that his race paid with slavery, discrimination and oppression…so yes, they “own” the word. I think they have earned that. Why does that trouble you so much?

How do you begin to even liken the condition of whites to those of blacks? In what way are your experiences as a white man at all instructive on the experiences of blacks in America? You offered examples, now enlighten us and make your point.

Yeah, but really…who’s going to kidnap one…and if they did they probably don’t have enough money to go very far…obviously a national Amber Alert is excessive.

And, as Steve Harvey said, take them on Monday, be back home on Wednesday.

We have to wrap this up. We’re simply not going to agree. Your “rebuttal” is very weak.

You’re back to making empty pronouncements. If you do not agree with me that there is no white equivalent word of hate that equals nigger, then simply state exactly what that word is, it’s history, who used it to enslave and oppress an entire race and why it’s so hurtful. I’m white and I’m unaware of such a label or word. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Next, so “some” white slaves or indentured servants is the equivalent to the enslavement of the majority of an entire race and, even after slavery was ended, the continued discrimination and oppression of that race? Please identify the whites that were treated in such a manner. Please provide references and be specific. Please explain the legacy that exists today giving license for a white man to feel oppressed. Furthermore, your familial line in the context of racism is irrelevant. If you appear to be black, it matters not what “mixing” as you put it occurred…what matters is navigating a world with racism still alive and being identified as black and therefore subject to irrational bias. So you’re saying that a black person today that suffers discrimination and bias has no right of outrage because they do not have an unbroken familial lineage to a slave? What the fuck are you saying here? If slavery on the level it existed in America for blacks existed for whites please provide your reference. I’ll wait.

Yes, I’ve heard the hateful spewing of some black “leaders”. I don’t like it. And they have as much right to their voice as the KKK does…and I support both rights. However, what word is it they are using that is equivalent to nigger? White devil? Evil white man? What? That’s what has your knickers in a knot??? Really? You hardly rebutted my point. Nigger is patently offensive when used in a certain context and is patently offensive to some no matter what the context. Name the white equivalent to that.

Next, tell me what term that you’ve heard that you find so hateful and hurtful. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Finally, please provide your specific basis for the history of “cracker” and how hurtful it is. You’re going to have to do better than simply retort “subjective”. That’s weak. Make your point, and support it with well-reasoned examples.

You are so missing my point. Yes, I would react the same way if the kids had been white. Yes I would react the same way if the officer was white. So a black guy born and raised in south Africa payed for it huh? How exactly did professor X pay for it?

Race had everything to do with those scenarios I posted. They happened because of race. I don’t know how you arrived at the conclusion race had nothing to do with it.

“I cannot hide being white like Jews could hide being Jewish, and so forth. If someone harbors racists feelings towards whites (and they do), I cannot hide from that.”

What is your point. You can’t hind not liking big noses. Can’t hide a southern accent and all the negative connotations that go with it. What’s so special about darker skin?

It doesn’t trouble me, you’re just wrong.

“How do you begin to even liken the condition of whites to those of blacks? In what way are your experiences as a white man at all instructive on the experiences of blacks in America? You offered examples, now enlighten us and make your point.”

Now you need to be more specific, ancestry or actual people?

What experience has X had that I haven’t had and can’t be equally applied in reverse?

I can continue to name specific resent examples of similar experiences if you wish.

The town of Greenwood’s black city counsel blocked the building of a “Low’s” (something the town needed) for the official reason that it was going to have white ownership. Now you tell me how that isn’t instructive for me.

Not too long after I moved into my apartment, this black kid who was about 7-8 tried getting my attention by yelling “Mr. Vanilla Face” from his second story balcony.

This was a first. I had to laugh to myself.

I figured he showed respect by calling me “Mr.”

So your parents taught you to look for racism? Smart. There’s black supremacists out there too, my parents didn’t instill a sense of entitlement in me because of it. Talk about perceived offense.

AAHHHHHH now we’re getting somewhere! As long as I know that the cutoff is 1985, we can move forward! So basically…I’m right. The kids at the court don’t have any reason to be using the word, nor should they be offended if any non-blacks say it.

Yes, you cannot hide being white. But you are very unlikely to be denied employment or housing because you’re white. You are very unlikely to suffer any hardship from the color of your skin. That another race may have prejudice against you is not really germane to this discussion - although you’d like it to be, because you simply do not suffer from such prejudice in any material way.

Your ancestral argument is just really weak and smacks of racist propaganda. Does the argument go something like, “they have no connection to the slaves, so why the hell can’t they do this or that and so forth”. Yeah, I’ve heard that one before. I’m not impressed with it.

I’m pretty sure X has experienced more racism than you ever will. Like I said, your race will likely NEVER be a factor in your employment, housing, etc. EVER. You can go on 10 interviews next month and you’re just as likely to interview with 10 white men or women as you are to interview with one black person. It’s not that you don’t experience racism, hell I experience it. But it’s just not the same. It’s not.

And it sounds to me like the town of Greenwood wanted minority representation for a new business in town. Is it racist? Probably. Is it biased? Definitely. But were you part of the ownership group of Loews? No. Were you denied a job on the basis of your race? Is it likely to happen to you? No. And how likely is it that such city council decisions will spread like wild fire across the country? Not very likely. How likely is it that such a decision will stand challenge in the Courts? Not likely. At least that bias was open and obvious. What of the plight of a black person interviewing with a white manager who has no intention of giving them the job from the very beginning, because of color? How will they know? How do they get redress?

It is NOT the same. If your goal was to illustrate that racism occurs against whites too, we all knew that. Mankind has engaged in discrimination from the beginning.

I don’t believe for one minute you got fired for your stated reason. And if this is true, you should retain a lawyer and seek redress. Simple. As. That.

Of course double standards exist. Is that what this thread is about? You’re an adult aren’t you? Where you been? That’s reality dude. Get used to it or get used to being angry.

I cannot find any reference for this now dubious story of Greenwood blocking a Lowes because of white ownership. Please provide link and reference for review.

I blame this entire thread on the hippie generation who didn’t discipline their kids, who goes around thinking they can call someone a slur…without knowing the person…and not get their shit pushed in?

I understand they exist and that’s life, and to some extent yes, you have to deal with it. The problem I see is when it starts to become so accepted that people don’t even see it as a problem. The idea that if you’re white you’re allowed no complaints will never sit well with me. Fucked up shit happens all the time, yes, but that doesn’t mean it SHOULD.
