Gratuitous Use of the N Word?

Four60 is spot on.

In addition, the N word obviously has a tragic and offensive history. The more recent adoption of the N word by today’s people of African descent is in part a way to “lessen the impact” of its offensive racist meaning. By using it in various forms on their own terms, blacks “own” it to some degree.

It still doesn’t remove the sting when an ignorant whitey uses it. Posse is another word widely used by today’s black culture, when originally it was often used to describe the gathering of white men to hunt down runaway slaves.

I was always the smallest kid in class. I got called midget, elf, shrimp, and of course dwarf while growing up. I’m still small in stature of course. Calling myself Iron Dwarf pokes fun at myself, and gives me a certain control/empowerment.

Not quite the same as the discussion of this thread, but the principal applies.

I’ve heard people use the N word in a place where there were prodominately blacks and the person saying it wasn’t black and nobody was offended. Gasp Fact of the matter is the word is now part of the urban culture and many hispanics and whites from that culture are using the word too now. People can argue all they want how it’s offensive if ANYONE but a black man uses it, but I call BS.

I don’t see people in uproar when the Rapper pitbull says nigga in his raps or JLo or any other non-black urban raised person. Now people may not agree with and may not like when non-blacks use the word, but we are long passed the days when people who aren’t black have to be careful who they said it around. Its pretty easy to distinguish if someone is using the word in a negative way or if it’s just part of their vocabulary because of their culture.

I’ve got hispanic friends who say it all the time, I lived in a black neighborhood during my childhood, so did my hispanic friends, so they grew up hearing the word ALL THE TIME, and naturally started using the word themselves and never have problems in public.

I personally don’t use the N word, but if one of my Black friends calls me a Nigga, I’ll usually call him it back except exclude the “a” and add the “er” back in, just for shits and giggles. For example:
Black Friend: “what up mah nigga, you down to get into something today”
Me: “Hell Ya my nigger, I’m down”.

No I’m not racist, but I love poking fun at racism, they usually laugh and know that I don’t mean any ill intent. But no I would never say this to someone I wasn’t really good friends with.

Do those bullets he was talking about in the flick actually exist? Cuz damn!

no WAY. IF they did. I would be at the gun shop right now. No joke. I gushed like a little girl when that shotty went off. Hell I had a dream last night that me the Laker Girls and my AA-12 were walking thru the Valley of the Shadow of Death and I truly was fearing no Evil.

If you have a friend who has the nickname ‘bitchtits’ its ok for you to call him that.

If a casual acquaintance, say a person in a pick-up basketball game, calls him bitch tits thats offensive because you dont have the degree of friendship required to do so.

Used among black folk, nigger can be used as a term of kinship. If you aint kin dont fucking use it. Or do and be a social pariah. Nobody cares. Its not that complicated.

I understand you dont like PC. Even as a liberal I agree that its a restriction on free speech and open discourse. Use your best judgement.
No, this is a terrible analogy. Bitchtits is an inside joke among friends who know each other. It is a term of endearment. There is no arbitrary blanket distinction, like race, about who can use the term.

Blanketly claiming blacks can use a word because there is essentially a kinship between people of a race is not only wrong, but racially biased.

You are equating a personal connection among friends to an imaginary kinsmanship among a race. The 2 aren’t even close to being in the same ballpark.

Why would a white person get offended by a bunch of black people calling each other nigga? As long as they’re not saying anything derogatory about me why would I give a fuck what they call each other. Why it so hard to just accept that non-black people can’t use this word?

i never understood why such a supposedly offensive word was used so often. Im usually the only white dude playin ball at the Y, and it doesnt make things feel exactly welcoming. Im told its racist to call black people the n word, but a word only a select race is allowed to use seems pretty exclusionary to me…seems to me the word still functions to drive a wedge between peoples, albeit in a different manner than the way it was originally used. thoughts? comments on how it “comes from a different place” when its used by black people? id like to understand
I used to also play pickup ball at a Y in California and I fucking hated how they were constantly calling each other nigger. It didn’t matter the situation, it could have been friendly or heated but it was always a constant stream of nigger this and nigger that.

It’s the fact that they are allowed to do and say things that you are based solely on your race.

It’s like those who claim that allowing gays to marry will ruin the institution of marriage. How the fuck is allowing my gay neighbor to marry his partner going to ruin MY marriage to my wife?

Unless they’re both in bed with my wife, it’s a non-issue.

By the way, I’m calling all my white friends here on T-Nation, cracker, whitey, honky,… and I’ll bet none of my black friends here give a damn.

lol

Can you clear up your response. I’m not sure your point came across.

You left out “peckerwood.” Which is almost used in same context as the N-word among white people…at least where I grew up. Says a lot about where I grew up…unfortunately…lol.

It isn’t the fact that they get to use it, it’s that I can’t.

Additionally I would say there are blacks who take offense to it’s use. And I know some are offended being called the n-word by other blacks.

No peckerwood in NJ. The 1st time I ever heard that word was when I watched American History X.

…why can’t you? If you use it in the wrong context, don’t be surprised if people who happen to be black as well as other races get pissed at you.

‘Nigga’ is used by many people lately casually, often to mean a stupid person and would usually only be seen as racist if the person saying it has that “vibe” about them. The white guy who grew up in south Houston who says it in a joking manner to black guys he grew up with doesn’t have shit to worry about when he uses it on the basketball court…and if his friends don’t like it, I am sure they will let him know.

Some jackass using it around people he barely knows will have to accept the consequences.

Those standards exist because HISTORY AND PEOPLE’S FEELINGS exist.

Fucking deal with it.

If you were man enough, saying it wouldn’t be a fearful thing for you and you would accept the consequences.

many find this word offensive lately. None of my friends use it at all so what is up with these blanket statements?

Like was said above, unless this is 1990, this was one weak attempt by a racist to start some shit here.
