Got 'dem Blues

We’ve got the metalheads and classicists coming out, any blues fans? John Lee Hooker (saw him) and R.L. Burnside rank as my two top bluesmen. Anybody else out there in T-Land?

John Lee Hooker is a blues genius.

Last year I went through a very heavy blues phase. Hooker was my favorite. RL Burnside is also pretty cool. Jimi Hendrix (heavily blues-influenced) too. I saw Buddy Guy play a show in Red Bank 6 months or so ago. . .that just kicked ass.

How about Junior Kimbrough?

Corey Harris is one of the young guns staying true & progressing.

2 DVD sets are out featuring music from the Scorcese Blues series coming up. Anyone seen them?

Mostly rare footage from the 50’s & 60’s broadcast on German TV.

I’m a blues fan too. Years ago go I took an interest course entitled History of the Blues at one of my local universities.

During the course, one of my classmates turned me on to the late John Campbell. He plays a wicked slide guitar and does a rendition of “When the Levee Breaks” that blows Led Zeppelin’s cover of the same right out of the water.

Apparently, John gave an incredible live show too.

Unfortunately, John passed away after recording only two albums. Pity

robert johnson, stevie ray vaughan, muddy waters, b.b.king, jimi, susan tedeschi, buddy guy
theres a shitload of great blues musicians even still today

Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Taj Mahal, Clarence “gatemouth” Brown, Eric Johnson, Sonnyboy Williamson, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn are some of my personal favourites. There are a few more I can’t think of at the moment.

Favorite Bluesmen

Buddy Guy
B.B. King
Robert Johnson
Robert Cray
Stevie Ray Vaughn
John Lee Hooker

Seems I need to listen to some more blueswomen because I can’t think of any right now

Jimi Hendrix and what about some old skool blues like leadbelly…good stuff there…

John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, and SRV are my favorites in the blues. ZZ Top has written some excellent blues tunes as well.

AngeloM mentioned blues women. Check out Nina Simone’s album “Nina Simone sings the blues”, it’s a complete album of “surefuck” songs. Etta James, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billy Holiday, are probably the most well known. Many would consider these women Jazz singers, but all could sing the shit out of the blues and all recorded blues albums.

As far as guitarists, you guys have mentioned all the greats. Hooker and SRV are two of my favs.

One that didn’t get mentioned was the Prodigy Jonny Lang. He didn’t dissapear, he’s out there, paying his dues, putting out records, and he’s still a baby by blues standards.

Another blues guy, besides the guitarists, is John Popper. Has anyone else seen this guy play the harmonica live?

Simply amazing.

Good thread

Robert Johnson, SRV, Son House, B.B. King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker…
The list is too long.

Any blues fans need to check out the W.C. Handy Music Festival in Florence, AL. It’s the birth place of W.C. Handy and they have a week long blues and jazz festival every year around the first of August. They have big name headliners and little bands you’ve never heard of playing at every club, restaurant and park in the area.

It’s a blast.

Luther Allison, Son House, JL Hooker, SRV, Magic Sam, Robert Johnson, etc.

Magic Sam’s Westside Soul is the best Blues Album ever IMO.

Don’t forget Lightnin Hopkins.

For those who like the old stuff check out “Land Where the Blues Began” on Rounder Records. includes Huddy Ledbetter’s (Leadbelly) 1st known recording and a bunch of other great tracks.

the bk by the same name by Lomax is quite good as well.
