I know Westside changes the stance width for Good Mornings. How does this change the muscles involved, or the general training effect?
Anyone know?

I think a narrower stance would hit the lower back more and when you widen up it would hit the glutes and 'strings more.
I guess I would say that if you were not doing your GM suspended it wouldnt matter much because the true use og GM’s for a powerlifter is chaos training, but i guess if you were really using GM,s for bodybuilding pourpouses it would help stimulate growth but for powerlifting its main pourpouse is chaos training. but if you do them suspended you could do them in either deadlifts stance traditional or sumo, because suspended gm really help the deadlift start. I have only done them in a traditional stance and really see very little reason to change. I like to use good mornings in heavy triples to fatigue me before I do heavy rack pulls or reverse band deadlifts to act like a meet.
I’ve found that doing GMs with a variety of stances makes a difference in how much weight I can use on the movement, and thus would lead me to believe that, if there aren’t actually different muscles involved, you’re at least getting a different CNS effect.
Which makes using different stances worthwhile, IMHO.
Char-dawg, when you say it affects how much weight, do you mean that a closer stance means less load is possible? Might your experience concur with Greekdawg’s comments?
I agree with Greekdawg. If you want a comparison, think about the difference between doing conventional and sumo deadlifts. Basically the same movement, but different muscle groups are targeted.
No, I don’t find that one stance hits the back more (or less). What I do find is that you get a significantly different pull in the hams, which leads me to believe that the CNS effect is different.
As for what stance is the strongest, I find a medium stance to be about 5-10% stronger than a wide stance. Haven’t tried an extremely narrow stance yet…
