whatever Jason Bourne does
I would do something where you actually get hit like a type of striking, lot of grapplers get suprised when they start getting hit if your not used to it at all. Some simple boxing or maui tai should be sufficient would allow for you to block and defend pretty well and deliver attacks that if landed would knock out any average person.
learn wrestling - but make sure you learn how to block with your head, so you get used to being smashed up and realizing that your head is a great asset in fights… then supplement that with learning how to throw a quick hard punch.
What is offered?
You’re going to have to look at the classes. When I was at university (long ago) the only club that sparred contact was the kung fu club (surprise). Shotokan was point based sparring and katas dominated their training. The judo instruction was excellent. For about two semesters the aikido guys were of the “hit 'em then twist 'em” style but went spiritual after that. Tai chi was not instructed as a combat art.
For self-defense look for instruction that involves sparring/rolling, bag and pad work. Stay away from those classes that are heavy on the katas/forms and anything that is too “mystical”, “deadly for the ring” or looks too complicated.
Generally, common styles that fit this criteria are boxing, muay thai, BJJ, wrestling, judo, and sambo. JKD, FMA and Silat can also be very nice with the right instructors.
Of course it probably costs you just a few bucks for a semester. So take a look at a bunch of them and try the ones that look interesting.

Learning wrestling/ju-jitsu/any kind of form based entirely on grappling and ground work won’t help you as much in an actual confrontation as it theoretically seems.
The circumstances of most confrontations requires you to distract, maim, or incapacitate your enemy (or ENEMIES which is another reason ground work and grappling is a terrible strategy to rely on) effectively enough or long enough to GET UP AND RUN AWAY.
People with real experience in “street fights” will tell you that the last thing you want to be doing in a fight is rolling around on the ground with a guy when he pulls out a knife, or trying to lock a joint while his buddy is grabbing a blunt object.
I would echo recommendations for boxing/kickboxing or just general self defense techniques that teach eye/throat gauging and emphasize speed and brutality to allow for safe escape as soon as possible.
I would also echo the recommendation of having a gun, and generally just avoiding bad places. As they say the easiest way to avoid a fight is to not be there when it happens.
My 2 cents.[/quote]
Mr P. makes one of the best points of self defense. Your objective should be to get out of there, many people have this fantasy of getting into a knock down drag out fight with some bad dude and looking like a total bad ass.
Judo and wrestling will help keep you from ending up on the ground just as much as they help you get someone else to the ground. Don’t believe me? Try tackling a wrestler some time. Good luck.
That said, you’re right about staying out of fights being even more important than “winning” them.
train your body for the worst but use your mind to stay out of that.
The military, and serveral police agencies teach Krav MAGA. No special moves, it is common sense fighting skill. You can take classes and be orange belt in 6 weeks and that should be more than enough for your average bar fight, just protection…
“You do not rise to the occasion in combat, you sink to the level of your training.” That’s a quote from Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, one of the world’s foremost experts on violence as well as a West Point psychology professor and professor of Military Science. Don’t fuck with grappling, you can’t think when your in the heat of combat, you do what you practice. If you grapple you’ll put yourself in a bad position without realizing what your doing.
Most of these guys have obviously never felt the intensity of a true non ego fight. Don’t listen to them.
Boxers don’t have to think about their legs or grappling in the ring or practice, so they certainly won’t under the influence of extreme doses of adrenaline. A Shorin ryu guy for example will recognize the classic boxer stance and stomp his leg in half.
I’ve been in a number of martial arts since I was 8. I now study Aishin Bujutsu with Sensei Oberloh who taught martial arts in Hawaii for more than 20 years. Something like Aishin Bujutsu is what you want. There is no sport or aesthetic value to it. It focuses on striking, ground fighting, joint manipulation, a variety of weapons, and especially weapon disarms. Aishin is very rare so I doubt you’ll encounter it, so I would suggest Krav Maga. Krav Maga has simple techniques and recognizes that fine motor skills are non existent in real fights.
note 90% of grappling techniques are made worthless by knives and teeth. It’s a good idea to get a pocket knife and learn some knife fighting. Also don’t listen to the 5 year olds talking about “glock-jitsu.” Gun disarms are simple, but usually you can daze someone so bad with one good strike that they won’t be able to think about their little pussy weapon.

Stabbing someone is usually a bad idea. Legally you are far better off shooting someone or clubbing them with a random object.

“Glock-jitsu” was a joke…on YOUR level…suprised it went above your head. Since when did gun disarms become simple?? People do train to shoot…and not just standing 15-25yards in front of target. You never know who you’re dealing with…I would love to see you disarm a former Navy SEAL or any Special Forces or SWAT.
Pussy weapon??..lol…yeah,your logic will get a pussy hole in your head or chest. Its not anything to be taken lightly. Damn shame.
Just adding my $.02 here…
(I’m not an expert or anything. Done MA for 30 years, jujutsu for about 25. Run a dojo. You know, the usual.)
A martial art is a tool for a specific purpose. You need to estimate what your needs are. Muay Thai is great, if you’ve got some space. BJJ is great if he doesn’t outweigh you by 50 lbs. and is unarmed. Oh, and alone. This is not to say these are bad arts, far from it but would your toolbox only be complete with a single hammer or just a wrench? MMA claims to bridge the gap but aside from a few very talented individuals (other arts have them too), I just don’t buy it.
Most people really want to do an MA for one of 3 reasons
-
It looks kewl so it will impress your buddies. Sure.
-
It will impress that hot chick you’ve had your eye on. Maybe.
-
They feel insecure generally and assume more violence will reduce their chance of encountering it. Nope.
Also, when people talk about a “fight” they also normally mean a duel, where they square off with someone, go at it for a bit and then can back off. This is vastly different from, oh, say, the 300 lb. biker on angel dust who thinks you are the Anti-Christ. Those guys are a real pain in the ass and never seem to attack right for me to use my dim mak.
Finally, if you really, really want to study self-defense, ask any prospective instructor what it is. If they do anything than articulate the legal definition (varies from state to state) they are probably giving you bad advice and maybe preparing you for some jail time.
A good place to start wrapping your head around it all is
And as always, I might just be full of shit…

I’d still like to find the ignore button for this Bukkakejitsu idiot.

Yeah, I have a hard time understanding that’s a joke, I also honestly believe you’re 5. Joke or not, you’re suggesting a gun is a good idea. If you shoot someone in self defense, there’s a good chance your going to prison and just took the life of someone who is maybe just desperate or off their meds. If you stop them with your body, you may get a couple months in jail at worst and didn’t kill someone.
And yes there are people who are skilled with a gun, but it’s not as likely for them to attack you as a random thug, obviously. My point is, if someone has a gun on you, disarms take a split second while reaching for your gun will get you killed. Two years ago here in South Bend a 15 year old tried to rob an off duty cop in the YMCA parking lot. The cop reached for his gun and got shot to death.

The only thing I suggested in that post is that you’re an idiot…and you can spend the same amount of jail time for using your body as you could for using a gun…and if you shoot somebody and go to jail…its possible that it wasn’t self defense…depending on the situation. You act as if everything you’ve said is universal…and its not.

Hahahahahahahahaha “Hey guys look I’m funny”
Just because you are a newb to fighting and can’t come up with anything logical to say…haha. Don’t worry the ref will break it up if he really trys to hurt you.

Okaaaaaay…I’ve claimed nothing is universal. You are wrong. I have been convicted of assault that was actually self defense. I got probation. So have a few of my friends who weren’t only defending themselves. Probation. I also know a guy who shot a guy in the knee with a gun in self defense and got 2 years. A lttle higher and I’m sure it would have been more like 20.
The point is, guns kill much easier than hands.

No shit…so it was RULED self defense?..and you were still convicted? Hmmm, from your posts here recently…it sounds as if you think you’re a bad ass and you paid for it. End of discussion.
