I recently got back into golfing more seriously. I have never been able to shoot sub-90 scores, however. My goal is to shoot 80 this summer. It seems like I will play really well at times, then one hole will come along and I’ll lift my head up and totally miss the ball and hit it fat. Or other times I chip extremely well then just plain chip it well over the green. Then I’ll totally slice my ball into the woods or water when I want to stay to the opposite side of the fairway. What’s the deal?
I dunno man. I can’t figure this fuckin game out either. I have dedicated myself to the range this summer to see if i can start shooting in the high 80’s low 90’s every time I play. I’m going to the range just about every day after work. Dunno if it’s going to work out though. I’m playing 2 rounds this weekend so I’ll see how they turn out.
geez and I was going to shoot for the range once a week and 18 holes on the weekend. I actually am lucky though, I live about 5 minutes drive from a fairly decent range and practice greens.
I played on my school team for a “season” but haven’t played since then other than going to the range occasionally. I sucked but plenty of people on the team sucked more than I did, one kid would shanking the ball at literally every tee.
if you wanna get better you should take a couple lessons from a club pro wherever you golf. Should be cheap and should have some very easy/basic tips to get you shooting lower scores I.E. Stance, grip, weight displacement, swing… you know just basic stuff that you might be overlooking.

x100, best money you can spend when it comes to golf. I couldn’t break 100 for 2-3 years took about 6 lessons and started consistently shooting low 90’s. My biggest problem is playing a complete game, one day I’ll hit every fairway and can’t chip or putt then next I’ll shake every drive but chip and putt like Tiger. My best round is an 84 but that was awhile ago when I played a lot now that I have a kid if I play once a month I’m doing good.
Best of luck.
Shaved 10 strokes in 2 weeks.
Kinda goofy but all makes sense.
We all tend to overthink instead of just doing.
Like throwing a baseball while playing catch. You don’t think about grip, form, motion, speed etc. You just look at the target and throw.
Free your mind…
I got clubs but havent played in like 5 or more years. My son got into it because my father loves golf. I went to the range a few times with my son then. I do OK but it always goes to the right, whatever that’s called. If I “Happy Gilmore” it, it will go straight.
It sounds like you need to take lessons.
Well, if any of you are actual golf fans, this last week I drove 2400 miles one way to Pebble Beach to watch the U.S. Open… chaa.
While I think lessons are a good idea, nothing compares to going to the range as much as possible. You can get the basics from websites, golf digest, etc. From there, its figuring it out via repetition…

I’d agree if only this guy was a natural at golf. If you’re shooting in the 80s, you can probably get better with the basics from magazines, websites etc, and along with practicing at the range. However, if you’re shooting 90+…lessons PLUS hitting the range to practice what you were told in your lesson will lead to far superior results. I’m a high 70s shooter and still go for lessons but not so much the range. Still figuring out some kinks.

Shooting in the 70s will always be about short game, short game, short game. 100yds-and-in type stuff, practice and you will develop touch on those chips, etc
And with the full swing, the goal is that it’s correct and repeatable (under pressure). A few lessons are prob mandatory if you’re unsure about the former, and then of course that latter is up to you.
And keep that head down
my short game is definitely my strongest point no doubt. I parred 4 holes in a row the other day due to excellent putting. But then totally fucked up the last 2 holes and took triple bogeys. Anyway, I think I may look into a lesson or two. I’m positive if I get to the range enough I will be shooting 80 by the end of summer. I was just watching some Hank Haney lessons on youtube and totally figured out what I was doing wrong with my driver. I can’t wait to get to the range tomorrow and try it out.
