Meh… i said fuck it way back. Ears are jacked. Face is jacked… but otherwise i feel damn good at 46 considering my past
Me too. I was going in the direction of BUDS so the options were limited to mos within that realm.
Mine didn’t say any particular MOS. I just qualified for every MOS available.
On topic: a garden designer, but only of large scale “grand” gardens.
Stuff on par with Le Nôtre’s work at Versailles and Vaux-le-Vicomte. Luxembourg Gardens, Chenonceaux, Villa d’Este, Nebuchadnezzar’s hanging gardens, Suzhou’s scholar gardens, etc.
Places with a unified overarching design and filled with unique private spaces. Gardens where you can get lost for days.
I wanted to be a soldier growing up however a significant brush with the law as I was about to leave school and then a couple of years later a rugby injury whilst going through the recruitment process put paid to that.
On the opposite end of the spectrum though having a severely disabled and ill child id possibly be in the medical profession working with people with learning/physical disabilities.
Do you mind if I ask about this? My youngest son has Floating-Harbor Syndrome, which has less than 100 documented cases, so getting a diagnosis and treatment has been a nightmare.
I’ve also thought about going into research since there is so little info.
Gunsmith. Big emphasis on stock finishing and checkering.
Of course not, I’m always happy to be open about this.
My daughter has severe epilepsy and Niemann Pick type C which is a rare disease and sadly life limiting. It’s a progressive disease and is akin to childhood Alzheimer’s.
Just had a quick read about this, I can appreciate some of what you must go through. The rarity of Floating-Harbor Syndrome has blown my mind, I’m guessing it’s been incredibly frustrating and traumatic.
Thanks, this can be a sensitive subject sometimes.
I’m sorry to hear this, but I’m sure with you she’s has and is going to have a good time.
You know, this has been a problem with the Gault fantasy. I get that Rand had to over-correct from the Soviet Union and communism, but the two kids we talked about would probably die, or not be allowed in. No mention of empathy, or careers that require care.
And the irony is that Gault’s Gulch is an elite utopia. Making cigarettes with gold dollar signs is considered a virtue. Most of what people have said they want to do in this thread is something artistic or self sufficient. So more like a commune or tribal structure.
There are two people I respect in Atlas Shrugged. The unnamed “quiet productive couple” that host Dagny and Rearden when they want to make their infidelity public. Which fuck them for being asshats.
Quiet and productive sounds good.
People tend to be selfish. It takes a special type of person to be willing to deal with the harsh ships of other people if they have a choice not to.
I like pleasing others with my work, but it’s for myself.
I disagree. This is why Rand tried to make it appear like a virtue and used convoluted and specious arguments to “prove” this “objective” truth. She had to invent a morality for her pseudo philosophy, that was really an ideology, because most people naturally reject her ideas since they are inherently repulsive. Remember, Rand was a racist and elitist who treated her husband like shit and had no children. Why would anyone choose a life path guided by her values?
Since people will question what I’ve stated here is some evidence. One, her comments on Native Americans showed a complete lack of humanity and were, by any reasonable person’s perspective, racist. The Libertarian party even tried to get her cultists to reject her opinion on Native Americans but they refused. Her opinion also showed her lack of knowledge as she often claimed to be more American (what does that even mean?) than Americans who were American by birth. Well, Native Americans are Americans and they have and do fight for our military. They gave more to this country than she could have or would have. To still refer to them as the Other is just plain being an ignorant garbage person.
Then we have her comments on racism in America which show her to be utterly ignorant or deliberately duplicitous. Here is a quote from her: “Observe the hysterical intensity of the Southern racists; observe also that racism is much more prevalent among the poor white trash than among their intellectual betters.”
Racism as we know it today was created by educated men. So called scientific racism. This happened in the 19th century. Also, it was wealthy plantation owners in the South who used racism to justify enslaving blacks in the face of abolitionism. If poor southerners fought to defend the Confederacy (which meant defending slavery) it was because they were persuaded by the wealthy class who had the most to lose with abolition. I mean, who was more racist, the white slave owner with a large plantation or some poor white farmer (who was called poor white trash)? Note she says “observe.” This means she is viewing things from a distance, through her filter of deranged ignorance rather than basing her “facts/truth” on experience. It is a completely uneducated and unscientific statement. Yet she, who should have known better, puts it out as fact.
When she saw a line of policemen with dogs and firemen with hoses confronting civil rights marchers, she saw working class, uneducated, low IQ racist brutes oppressing black people. If she were truly intelligent, or at least intellectually honest, she would have asked who is behind those men because they were the real racists.
Anyway, she was not someone whose values would build or create anything. They can only exist after others have sacrificed and built a sense of community and a society which sought to benefit everyone. In short, people are not naturally selfish. Children, maybe, and that explains why some young people find her appealing. But once you become an adult you give up childish things and thoughts.
I haven’t read rand and am not familiar with her philosophy
I’ll assume what you said is true
I am familiar with the academic literature on job satisfaction and it seems that the most important non- financial factors are 1) social connection 2) sense of purpose 3) recognition
Caretaking jobs can satisfy these three, but not all people get as much sense of purpose and recognition as they’d like and caretaking jobs can be very isolating (e.g., caring for senile elderly people)
Stress seems to have a u shaped relationship. Some challenge is good but not too much.
Most caretaking jobs are on the “too much” side for a lot of people
The jobs people have listed here as their “dream” generally facilitate “sense of purpose” and “recognition”, allow for connection and community if desired. None are easy, but can me modified if too hard
I was writing a similar comment, but you said it all.
Don’t take my assessment as truth, I’m not as narcissistic or uneducated or dishonest as Rand who confused her opinions and beliefs for facts.
However, I did provide an actual quote from her and referred to what she stated with regard to Native Americans. My claim about modern racism is also based on historical fact.
All add another point: there’s a HUGE difference between challenges that are anticipated and chosen vs stress that’s imposed as well as different types of stress
For example, I’ve struggled a lot in classes and don’t always do well, but some of my favourite classes have been the hardest. I like the challenge of learning even if it’s painful in the moment. I HATE dealing with things like university university not letting me sign up for interesting classes because it’s out of my control and an unnecessary barrier to my progress
On the workout front, I love pushing myself in the gym, but I’m not going to do something like a Spartan race or open water swimming where I’m dealing with hardships not related to the actual exercise
A simple question is, if you take from a man the sense of sacrifice for others, be it country or other individuals (think women and children first); take from him a sense of humility and gratitude; give him a sense that he, and his feelings, are the center of the universe; tell him his view of the world and other people is subservient to his truth:
What are you left with? Nothing that we would say resembles a man. You would have a bad father, bad husband, bad child to his own parents, bad friend, bad citizen, bad neighbor, bad person. You would have someone who resembles…. Ayn Rand. She could get away with it because she was a woman. Vito Corleone said that women and children could afford to be careless, but not men.
When a boy or man watches a movie like Saving Private Ryan when they are about to land on the beach in Normandy, I bet they (we) ask themselves, “could I have done that?” We realize that had we been born earlier, maybe it would have been us. I believe we all would like to think we would have the courage to have done that. I believe we think that if we had been killed there that it would have been worth it. We see those young men and acknowledge that those who died on the beach, died for us and died as heroes. They were better than us. We can only hope to approach their level of bravery and manhood. There still are men who answer the call and some don’t make it. We admire all of them. Rand never had to ask herself what she would have done. She could afford to be selfish and not put herself in the shoes of those who sacrificed it all, for us.
Those who follow Rand would be like Vichy France collaborators if that would have personally benefited them.
And to be fair, women have shown courage and lost their lives fighting in wars or as police or firefighters but my point is that society expects that from men.
If only more young people thought like this.
I agree 1000%.
I feel like your long posts should have been the speech Gault made.
Just to describe this in slightly different terms. There are two kinds of stress:
- Reactive Stress
- Proactive Stress
The Reactive Stress is that imposed upon you by situations and other people. This needs to be managed to reduce the negative impact on you.
The Proactive Stress is best called Creative Tension. All should seek Creative Tension opportunities. This is one of the capabilities of humans that separates us from the animal kingdom.
