Turn the squat rack around? It must be a small rack. And it must not be attached to the floor. Maybe it’s not a “rack” like I’m thinking?

Power cage, maybe? If you can change the height of the safety pins, cage comes to mind.
Anywho, that sounds like a workout in itself to turn it around. And I like facing the mirror ![]()
OK, I’m convinced. I’ll control drop the weight and see what happens. They probably won’t kick me out. ![]()
I did train on Wednesday with my trainer-guy. Squats, bench, 20 BW dips, some lat pulldowns and planks and stuff. Been on the road all day and I’m too pooped to find my notebook for the particulars. No PRs, but my arms and shoulders are DOMSing today, which means I hit upper body differently than when I train on my own. Win.
Owlie, that is a super-helpful comment on my shoulders creeping forward. I had totally not seen that, but it is very important.

Awesome. Vids for proof ![]()
The controlled drop will likely require a quick reset before each rep. So, it will be…get setup, take a breath, rip it, control drop it…get setup, take a breath etc.
I bet you get at least an extra rep, maybe two.

i really dont know what the hell its called, but power rack might be more applicable?
one of the videos i have of it-
and its def not bolted into the floor. if watch myself in the mirror i dont pay as much attention to feeling the lift. cant have a mirror on the platform!
Go for a control drop. Something I discovered, it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission so do what you like until something is said. Then just be agreeable and do the same thing the next time. I’ve never had anyone say anything to me. For example, last Saturday I lost my grip at the top with 365. It makes a big noise. Then I fell over backwards holding 295, dropped it and whacked my head. Still, no mention of noise.
Yeah, it’s time for the controlled drop. That is one area, my dear, where your refinement (nicely placing the bar back on the floor) is not working for you. I used to do the same thing until my coach told me I was expending as much energy putting the bar down as pulling it up.
O: no one comments on the noise of you dropping weights because you’re so damn strong they’re scared of you!
giterdone, one potential problem with the controlled drop is jiggling the video camera right off of the bench! Actually, that would be a funny video if it happened…
CBear, awesome front squats. And you looked very, very tasty doing them.
Snap, point taken. I need all my energy to get these reps up. There is none to spare.
O, I’ll just bet that 365 dropped makes a big noise! My weights will make but a modest clang comparatively.
nice pulling- and your shorts rock.
they made me dizzy.
Kim, no worries, my weights don’t even turn heads when they drop. Like dropping a pin on the floor; attracts no attention.
But your weights are better than mine, so when you drop them hopefully you won’t be confronted about leaving ![]()
I had to dump a bar that was loaded with 105 while benching and let me tell you, the clinkety, clink, clink sound that makes turns heads in the wrong way. So embarrassing!
I did not really think the Kimba Deadlift Freak Show could possibly attract more attention in the weight room. Well, I was mistaken. Enter, the controlled drop.
5/3/1 - Wave 9, Week 1 Military Press & week 2 Sumo Deadlift Day
Military Press
45.5# 1 x 5 <–working
52.5# 1 x 5 <–working, this was harder than it should’ve been, still some DOMS in my shoulders from Weds.
59.5# 1 x 3 <–weak money set
I’d forgotten to do my MP Day earlier in the week, so I squeezed it in first thing tonight. Not a successful move, and I’ll remember to do them on Mondays at home from now on.
Sumo Deadlifts
from risers:
85# 1 x 5
105# 1 x 5
from floor:
135# 1 x 3 <–working, drop it like its hot
148# 1 x 3 <–working, more dropping
belt on, but one prong looser:
166.5# 1 x 5 <–money set, rep PR +2
belt off:
135# 1 x 12 ← rep PR +2
Proof of droppage:
So, it turns out that I LOVE dropping the weight. LOVE IT! The noise is awesome, the plates bouncing off the floor is great. Fuck 'em all, I’m dropping that weight from now on. Plus, you all are so right – I was wasting TONS of energy putting the weight down nicely. Two PRs tonight, just from conserving my energy. YEAH!
Barbell Hip Thrusts (shoulders on bench)
135# 2 x 10
Done slow and controlled and full ROM, this really did hurt. Haven’t done 'em for awhile.
DB Snatch
27.5# 3 x 5, each side ← PR +2.5 lbs.
My snatch was looking good today.
Trying for the 30 lb. next time.
Rehab abductor exercises on stability ball.
Then home for a steak and baked potato with sour cream dinner. This was the most fun I’ve had in the gym in awhile. I’m already looking forward to dropping the weights next week.
FUCK 'EM ALL!! OK, so who was the fuckin genius that that started this whole thing and then predicted a 2 rep PR. Oh yeah…ME! <<<that’s me trying to be funny
There is something liberating about the sound of DLs hitting the floor. It’s a chance to let your badassness show with about being a douche.
And you’re just baiting me with the snatch talk but I’m not falling for it.

YEAH BABY! great job on the PR’s! controlled drop post deadlift FTW! it’s actually something I’m just keying onto as well. Although lifting at home, I might want to build a plywood platform to save my concrete floor.
Haha it shook the camera, good dropping ![]()
And your upper body looks AWESOME.
Congrats on the PR, dropping the weight will save more energy for more reps.
giterdone, you totally get credit for a great suggestion. Thanks! Prior to yesterday, I’d never been able to deadlift anything over 160 lbs. for more than 3 reps. So 2 extra reps made me REALLY happy. And snatch jokes are always funny.
George, definitely don’t crack the concrete before selling that house. Dropping your weights is serious stuff.
Nikki, I thought the camera shake was funny too. Thanks for the upper body comment.
This morning I woke up to a power outage, so I was forced to drive down to my local Peet’s and get a latte instead of making my usual green tea. Which I never drink except on vacation, so this was a real treat.
I think I recommended you try the controlled drop several months ago . . .
In all seriousness, looks like you’ve got it down. And the two rep PR is huge!
I’ll be honest, I don’t drop it either. We have a no weight droping policy so I have to keep the noise down deadlifting. THough that might not be an issue for me anymore.
Look at all the PR’s, damn good job.
Power outage here too. Hurricane Earl came through this morning. We may be out for a couple of days with is a pain.
