I call myself an amatuer historian of WWII and Vietnam. Its really hard for me to express to people how passionate I am about the nature of these wars and the histories of the men who fought them. I just really, really like it.
So when I found out that I would get to meet an army combat veteran of WWII(European Theater), Korea, and Vietnam, and one of Ernie Pyles’ “Great Men”, I was ecstatic. His name is Pete Connor’s, and my father has known him since he was a child, but hasn’t seen him since '73.
We’re going to visit him in my father’s hometown of Shenandoah, Iowa on our trip through the state. I’m not going to accost him with questions or anything, but I will ask some. But more importantly, I’m going to let him know that I am HONORED to be in his presence. Any day of the week I would rather shake hands with this man thansee some useless-ass celebrity or cocky sports star. I’m just REAL excited for this!
Remember, these guys are dying by the hundreds everyday fellas! As T-Men we gotta band together and work to preserve the histories that are quickly fading without being heard. Many of these men die without ever having people show interest in their experiences.Even their own family. That breaks my heart.
Take care guys.

Right on brutha!
I got to meet and now interact occasionally with a WWII hero. And I do mean hero. Every time I see him I try to let him know how proud I am of his service and how honored I am to know him. Those guys were really something else. A cut above.
