Getting into Muscle Cars...

i just checked out that Dynacorn site…JESUS! i guess its a good option for some, but not for this guy! for one thing, they only have the fastbacks- no hating on them, i love them, but ive decided i want a coupe. perhaps that decision come about in terms of money first, but after i saw pictures of several black coupes done right, the preference for “MY” car became clear. it fits more with my personality, ive never been one to brag or try and show people how perfect i am, but when action is called for, i show my true colors. i see that in a well done coupe. the fastbacks are amazing looking, but they arent hiding anything. they look fast just sitting there. a well done coupe has some mystery to it. people know its a classic mustang on the outside, but they dont quite know whats going on in the inside, especially when you fire it up with a big engine in there!

lame, i know.

Therizza-

no, i dont have space! i dont even know where the fuck im going to put this extra engine that my garage will supposedly be housing! ive got my eye on this white cupboard kinda thing in the corner of the garage that im sure is full of crap from moving 2 years ago, it might get stuffed in my jeep and promptly taken to the dump.

another thing thats pretty funny is that one of the guys im in contact with on the engine asked if i had something to lift it with or if he should bring his crane (hes passing through and offering to bring the engine to me)…funny part is i guess i had some illusions that i was strong enough that i could grab and friend and we could lift the damn thing. i never bothered to see how much one weighs…[/quote]

They way a good bit, lol! And don’t wanna drop em either. That’s where having some friends with tools comes in handy, since you can just borrow them instead of that huge initial outlay of funds.
As for any perceived weakness with the later blocks, who are we kidding, they are 40 year old cast iron! It was more important for the racers back in the day due to the lack of aftermarket race-ready blocks, but today, you can just get a main bolt girdle.

And it doesn’t sound like you will be running a roots supercharger, or racing it wide open for hours, so I think it would hold up just fine as a daily driver/ occasional outing to Bud’s Creek (hehe)
Ah, so many Mustang things racing through my head! All my friends at school are either into imports or Chevy’s (anything new by GM is crap imo) I too am a fan of the ‘sleeper’ look, and always wanted to put a 427 Cammer into a Crown Vic or something and just blow the doors off people. Coupes are teh sex. So are notchbacks, if you look at 5.0s.

From my experience, the Haynes manual is good to prop up the couch when a leg breaks off it. You’re way better off with a Chiltons or Motors Manual, get a used one and you’ll be fine with it.

Engines are heavy, 550 lbs or so fully dressed. You’ll need an engine stand and a way to lift it. I have a 1 ton hoist myself and an engine crane.

How many tools do you have? I have plenty but always need to get something else. You have to have a good amount of garage space as well and shelving to store parts. And it has to be secure, always someone wanting to swipe your tools.

Kinda ontopic:

Let’s just say that you beef up a muscle car to 500-600 horsepower. What would the gasmileage be? I’m guessing maybe 10/1 mpg or so? Actually not guessing but hoping. I know that when you’d floor it it wpuld get about 3-4/1 mpg but I’m not sure.

Shit… that would kill me with gas costing a good â?¬1.35 per liter here…

but the price- i could find a decent 67-68 289 coupe for the cost of their body!

I like the way you think! Having almost a mystery car, that some people wouldn’t expect to have balls but when you put the pedal to the metal the car flies. You’re gonna have to post update pics and everything for your project. I’m way interested!

Update- I’m looking into the difference in cost to build it to a 393 stroker. Already going to have to bore the block out a bit, which means new pistons anyway. Might as well grab some longer rods and new crank and grab and extra 42 cubes!

But, like I said I’m going to look into it, don’t know yet if it is that simple

There’s a white 1966 mustang fastback of some sort rusting out under a cover at my sister’s apartment complex. I felt it up but the cover is chained on. I want to liberate it.

so a google search told me there was a “mustang round-up” or whatever they called it, today, about 45 mins from my house. from the way it was described i expected to see a big parking lot just full of mustangs, girls in bikinis all over (said there was a bikini contest)…

my brother and i get there, and its about 10-12 cars. most of which were late 90’s mustangs, then there were 2-3 of the current generation (2003+?) mustangs, and one 1970 stang. worthless. drove 45mins for nothing, except maybe a laugh- late 90’s mustangs parked with their hoods open showing off factory v8’s with minimal SVT dress on them, ridiculous.

to make up for the disappointment we rolled by a local place (should have just gone there in the first place) and saw a bunch of really nice 68-70 camaros, a 70 chevelle SS, road runner, BOSS 302, mach 1, 68 mustang convertible, RIDICULOUS skylark, 2 67 GTO’s (actually LeManns)- one that had totally modernized suspension, steering, stroker 492? i believe…

anyway.

my engine should be here in the morning, looking forward to it.

A couple of friends had really cool cars where I grew up and would recommend either one. One was a 69 Camaro Z28 - pretty rare even then. The other one was a 71 Monte Carlo SS - Black. I have only seen one other. The MC had a big block 454 and was very powerful. Now that I think about it, he also had a late 60’s early 70’s Cuda.

It was the only car I can remember with a “six pack” (six barrel carb). The thing got about 5 miles per gallon but, gas was cheap. My first car was a 70 Camaro which was nice but only had a 305 with a powerglide tranny. Not very fast but, that was probably good for a 15 year old kid. Good memories, good times.

Shoulda gone Chevy! Haha, just kidding.
Those car meets go two ways, either great or a complete bust. It’s all on chance sometimes with who shows up. There’s a couple F-Body meets in and around Toronto, one of em’ is fantastic with guys bringing out 1st and 2nd Gen Camaros & Trans Ams and some 40-50 cars, while others you’ll have like 10 guys tops.

Just gotta find the right one!

Going for the 393 option shouldn’t cost you much more than just rebuilding it with the stock stroke and .030 over. Is the block a 4 bolt or 2 bolt main?

what the F did i get myself into? this thing has all sorts of rust and shit that i just didnt expect. exhaust manifolds are toast. the bolts holding them onto the heads are so F’d its not even funny. im going to have to detach the heads with the exhaust manifolds still attached and attempt to salvage the heads at a later date.

on a positive note, i guess, the valves and such were clean looking when i removed the covers. i guess whether or not that matters will be determined when i see if i am able to salvage the heads from the exhaust manifold wreckage!

havent seen inside yet, as the guy was several hours later than he said the other day. called this morning about the time i expected him, and he said he was just leaving north carolina, for a 5+ hr ride my way. so i went on about my day, then just as i got to the gym some 4 hours later he called to say he was about half hour away. so i head back home, re-arrange some cars to make room…and wait an hour and a half. i could have worked out you fucker! oh well, he was a nice guy at least.

so, ive certainly got my work cut out for me. never having done anything like this, my initial impression is that ive bit off more than i can chew, its pretty overwhelming. BUT if all goes to shit, i only paid 200 bucks for it, and i should learn something along the way. and, even if all i get from this heap is a useable block, i wouldnt have overpaid THAT much for it i guess.

Here’s how you get into one:

  1. Open the door.
  2. Sit (watch the head!)
  3. Close the door.

damn. all this time ive been avoiding cars unless they had a sunroof to hop in!

progress. after i took this shot i realized the metal rusted thing in the middle was a gasket, so i ripped that out exposing the dowels. then i got the heads off one side. on the other side one of the headbolts is rusted solid or something. the head of the bolt is all deformed looking, almost like it was welded in place. i cant find any seem between the bolt head and the cyl head, so im not sure what im going to do exactly. for a rebuild i wont be using the heads anyway, so im thinking if worst comes to worst i might be able to spin the entire head around the block, and worry about getting the bolt out later or something. who knows.

tips for un-rustifying these engine pieces?
