GERD & Corrective Surgery

GERD. Bad acid reflux. I have struggled with it for years and it is time to do something about it other than pop my daily meds. Most likely either the classic Fundoplication surgery or potentially the new LINX procedure. My primary concern is that most doctors recommend “NO heavy lifting”, forever, after the surgery.

Does anyone here struggle with GERD/reflux and/or had corrective surgery?

I had GERD a long time ago. Had a job that was 100% stress, and the day they downsized and laid me off I never had it again. Got off the meds and everything. Tomatoes set it off occasionally. Usually Pizza sauce.

Had it since childhood. My uncle died from esophageal cancer caused by years of acid reflux that he ignored. About 18 months ago I had surgery to reduce scarring on my vocal chords caused by acid in my throat. Glad you were able to get beyond yours. It sounds silly when people hear that you struggle with heartburn, but it can be debilitating.

You have it bad. My wife’s aunt died because of reflux. She aspirated into her lungs and died 4 weeks later in the hospital. No joke.

What meds are you taking? I’ve been on nexium for over ten years now. I’ve been thinking about the surgery as well, but it’s difficult to find a good time considering the diet/recovery process.

I didn’t realize the “no heavy lifting, ever” thing was an actual recommendation, though. I had thought about that, given that I’m a PLer and the intrabdominal pressure and all that, but never saw a recommendation against lifting. I did notice that sometimes the fundoplication ruptures, if it does, sometimes they implant a mesh structure or something to help strengthen it.

As much as I want to get off nexium, that ‘no heavy lifting’ really made me think twice about it.

Have you heard of Chris Kresser? He’s written tons of stuff on GERD and how to treat it and such. It’s gold!

Just curious, have you had a colonoscopy or endoscopy to rule out Crohn’s?

Very sorry to hear that. I have heard of others with lungs scarred from aspirating stomach acid but never heard of anyone that died as a result. I feel lucky that mine isn’t worse than it is.

I am primarily taking Nexium as well. Different docs say different things about the exercise and lifting post surgery. Some say no weights period, and some say that after at least a couple of months of NO lifting you can slowly ease back into it. I have never considered myself a true powerlifter, but I tend to stick to basic lifts more than anything else. About three years ago I managed an honest 425 deadlift, which I was pretty proud of at the time. I lift primarily because it is good mental therapy and because it is cool to be setting pr’s in middle age. Between career insanity and my GERD the last couple of years have been very spotty for lifting, but I cannot imagine NOT being able to get back to it. My lifting and gym time has always been ME time. The last several times I tried to lift heavy at all, I was having regurge issues during the lifts. Not fun.

I am looking into the LINX procedure in part because I am hoping that there will be less chance of tearing if I lift heavy (for me) post surgery.

Have not heard of Kresser but I will look into him. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes to the endoscopy. No sign of Crohn’s. A colonoscopy will be done within the next 4-6 weeks.

Good to hear. If it were me I would want to be sure. Crohn’s can cause a lot of problems that look like other things.
