Come on now! Prior to Columbus, the Americas were one big hippie commune and the tribes coexist™(ed) peacefully. We all know the Iroquois Confederacy never had any enemies.
The very common notion that men like Columbus were all unrepentant advocates of genocide is another great example of the power of the narrative. Assume intent, then run with it to whatever conclusion suits you.
Is it possible that Christopher Columbus actively worked to see about a coast-to-coast extermination of an entire population across two continents via biological warfare before there was a germ theory of disease?
Of course not. They were all just as oblivious to what the germs were doing as the un-contacted tribes were when these diseases burned across the land to terrible effect, with some estimates as high as 95 percent mortality for the entire suite of germs that were by then shared across African, European and Asian trade routes for millennia.
You can lay all kinds of things at the feet of any society throughout history, but crediting a bunch of hapless explorers who didn’t even know where they were with the greatest achievement in biological warfare seems like a stretch to me.
According to one of the articles, the supreme court ruled that it was unconstitutional for schools to be segregated. So maybe the question should be why is this allowed?
I’m obviously not for segregation one way or another, it just seems strange that people would complain about racial discrimination and then proceed to engage in racial discrimination themselves.
I used to live in a place where someone had put a plaque under their letterbox recognising that the land their house is built upon belonged to the indigenous people.
Being an asshole, I wrote them a fake legal letter from one of the more vocal legal firms on these matters that thanked them for recognising who the rightful owners of to the land are and if they could contact the law firm to begin transfer.
The next time I went past the house the plaque was gone lol
I haven’t kept up with this thread diligently over the last week or so, it is difficult as you can imagine.
I post here a news story out of Canada. Western University (formerly the University of Western Ontario), has appointed an advisor for anti racism at the University.
A number of years ago a professor named Philippe Rushton, who was a psychologist, was doing research that he claimed proved the inferiority of Africans. He referred to their reproduction as being like fish spawn. Many are conceived, but only a few are going to succeed. He was counter argued by a young Dr. David Suzuki, who later gained greater fame as an environmental crusader.
Also here in Canada, as the George Floyd issue ripples through the world, First Nations are clamouring at this time to get recognition of their rights since the Prime Minister admitted that there is racism in Canada, including in the police.
I ponder at this moment the recent resignation, effective July 31, of Mark Saunders, who was the first African Chief of the Toronto, Canada police force. He was contracted to be chief until sometime next year, but abruptly announced his resignation. I wonder if the weight of the world is getting to him, just a thought.
My overall point in posting this is that there is a greater upwelling about these issues than just in the United States. Institutions outside those borders are being forced to take notice and action.
Hey Brick, Traditional communist sculptures will look like Michaelangelo’s David, compared with what’s going to be put up in place of the traditional western ones.
I actually don’t mind some of the traditional communist sculptures they have their own aesthetic, blocky, stylised, weird looking(but I prefer the neo classical western ones better).
They’re tearing down statues of American Presidents, and in Seattle they’re erecting one’s of Lenin. The irony is astounding. If anyone’s still blind to the agenda of what’s going on they are wilfully blind.
This irritates the shit out of me. Columbus’s arrival heralded a massive change in everything and did indeed bring about tons of tragedy, but you shouldn’t consider the guy the devil. Sadly many of the woke people do because they’re ignorant of history.
Haven’t been following all this super closely but what’s your source? When I tried to find this all I saw was a privately owned statue or work of art on a piece of private property that the Seattle Mayor said needs to go a few years ago. Your post seems misleading at best unless I’m missing something. The best I can find from current stuff is right wing websites saying this should be removed because it’s offensive. Which is an odd take in the midst of complaining about the desire to remove/harm other statues.
Since 1995 the statue has been held in trust waiting for a buyer, standing on temporary display for the last 25 years on a prominent street corner in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.
It’s not new for sure, but you would think that since tearing down statues is the latest trend they would go after this one. All the human rights issues, mass murders, and such. Looks like commies get a free pass.
Not sure if new statues of Lenin are being erected in the US. The story I read mentioned Seattle and Germany(German one is definitely new).
I actually think the Lenin statue is a good statue, work of art and shouldn’t be taken down(whether on private or public land), even though he had more blood on his hands than any of the people from the West that have had their statues removed or destroyed by violent mobs.
Source, was a youtube video on my feed. I think you are right about the statue of Lenin, so I’m happy to admit I could be wrong about the one in Seattle. The one in Germany is definitely new. I know you don’t think what goes on outside the US has any relevance to you, but even you must still see the irony about that one. Can you imagine a statue of Hitler being erected in Russia? It would never happen.
I don’t think any of the statues should be removed, or damaged, that’s the work of serious criminals, philistines and barbarians. Those people have no place in a civilized society.
