There seems to be a common difficulty understanding this. The guy that got shot doesn’t have to be convicted by a jury of his peers of endangering the guy that shot him. It just has to be reasonable to believe from the perspective of the shooter.
I should add, to my above post, that I believe that’s the reason for the “an armed society is a polite society” thing. You don’t prosecute and/or second-guess-to-death the guy defending himself from what he perceives as danger, unless it’s obviously an unreasonable belief. Don’t start nothing; won’t be nothing.
It’s a quote from a character in a science fiction novel where dueling is allowed, and even encouraged. The majority of people who use it have no idea what it means; it just sounds edgy. And the people who do use it also tend to be the same ones who say things like screw your feelings and words can’t hurt you while crying about cancel culture. Well, in the novel it’s perfectly fine to shoot someone over words: the ultimate cancel culture.
I’m not really opposed to this. It’s probably better than waiting to ambush the guy with your boys.
Yes you are. Every edgelord would be.
What is this?
Nah. I’m 100% for a private law society.
People who want to sound edgy, on the internet.
In the novel, there isn’t private law and that term makes no sense anyway. With that said, you won’t always be the faster draw so you either keep your words to yourself, which would make you sad, or you accept a short lifespan. The other choice, from the novel, is to wear a brassard that denotes you are unarmed which will keep you alive while also lowering your social status.
Great novel by an all-time great.
I live in the southern Appalachians(well, foothills). People pretty much still do this here, unless they want a fight. You don’t always get a middle finger and a cuss here(you also don’t go flipping the bird and threatening to whip somebody’s ass for pulling out in front of you).
I’m used to it, but there are plenty of dead criminals, and middle-aged(and some younger) people walking with a limp(or cane!) that didn’t adjust in time.
My brother heard the response (from a kid my age) “Isreal should respond minimally or not at all, let the iron dome intercept the rockets”… great, well the iron dome and numerous associated countermeasures only intercept 90% of the rockets. When you have thousands fired at once, that leaves room for at least one hundred meeting their trajectory.
What’s a minimalist response? Shoot the rockets down, wait for the next attack and do the same?
I can’t speak to what constitutes a minimalist response in your brother’s friend’s mind, but not turning the area into a smoking pile of rubble when you could in a few short days strikes me as fairly minimalist. What sort of restraint would Hamas show if they could ever function well enough to deploy a military like Israel’s?
The same faulty reasoning (aka woke reasoning) is present in both scenarios. Ignore the actions of the actual aggressor or fail to hold them to any standard of decent behavior. Then get upset at the reasonable party’s reaction to unreasonable party’s terrible behavior.
The same faulty reasoning is why I was called a racist on these forums for defending a sarcastic response of “yeah, white power” to an asshole who was heckling a person with racist taunts, asking where his Klan hood was. There was no problem with the aggressive and rude behavior, only the reasonable response to it.
The same faulty reasoning is why videos of trans people throwing fits in public and recording it get brought to people’s attention. They get woke sympathy online when someone uses English grammar to address them instead of whatever woke speech code they’re trying to impose on people. The normal person who was trying to be polite in the face of unusual demands and behaviors is the hateful one, not the person making these insane demands on other people.
The same faulty reasoning is why the mothers of dead morons get brought up on stage at the Democratic National Committee every year. Their idiot sons, often career criminals and scourges upon everyone in the community, picked a fight with cops and lost, which makes them heroes to woke know-nothings.
Someone call the local street mural artist, another guy who pistol-whipped his girlfriend and pointed a gun at the cops has been tragically shot. This will be devastating to the dad who didn’t raise him and has 6 kids he’s never spent any time with. Someone get Al Sharpton, Benjamin Crump and a good t-shirt printing shop on the phone, pronto.
I could go on and on but pointing out the fundamental flaws in woke thinking is a lot easier than playing video games, cooking food and going fishing. Peace out!
Not my brother, a friend of his made these comments. My brother was arguing with him over this
fixed it for you.
It’s politics. Logic/Politics don’t mix.
I’d still vote democrat, my views on climate change, sexual health, drug legalisation or decriminalisation (the sky didn’t fall in Portugal, it wouldn’t fall here either), immigration, disability rights, Labour unions, universal healthcare (worked out great over here), improving public education in public school curriculums, environmental protection, right to privacy more align with what the democrats generally promote.
However I despise political correctness (a large part of as the “woke mentality” you refer to), not a fan of the pro-palestine/“the PLA/Hamas are composed of saints!” mentality within the party. I’m not a zionist or even fully pro Isreal (anymore) for the matter, I just see the situation for what it is… an absolute clusterfuck. I CERTAINLY don’t support Hamas… I tend to back democrat more than republican with regards to gun control.
I certainly don’t support banning gun ownership, putting limits on how many you can own (what’s the difference between one and ten if they’re all safely secured?) or banning specific weapons without just cause. I believe most firearm related homicides relate to handguns, so why are we all fixating on the AR-15. I can answer that, because it’s been used in quite a few high profile school shootings. But these events don’t even put a dent in the overall stats relating to firearm homicides.
I detest the false narratives both parties spin to cater toward an emotional response within the masses as opposed to appealing to reason and logic. Within our current paradigm I see the progressive factions of the democrats doing quite a bit of this by playing the race (or gender) card for EVERYTHING. I can only say shit like this on here as I’ll be burnt alive if I mention my views on THESE topics to most teenagers/young adults, but take George Floyd’s death as an example.
The killing was not justified by ANY means, though the media appeared to make out as if he was some saint of a man, a “gentle giant” as too evoke an emotion based response within the viewer. The truth is, Floyd had served EIGHT jail terms, had been charged wth aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on one instance, was purportedly an addict (not that this means you’re a bad person) etc. These needn’t detract from the case at hand, though the vested narrative within the news was false. Either don’t mention his character at all, or tell the truth.
I wouldn’t mention it during a conversation about the murder as this isn’t relevant, rather I’d like to poke at the media narrative stating the guy was like a saint? Why was this the case? I believe it was to evoke emotion within the viewer, yet emotion based responses aren’t really necessary when analysing a case like this. Any sane individual will note wrongdoing has occured.
Catering towards an emotion based response is how groups like BLM turn up. Hell, the riots as a whole appear to have stemmed from people reacting with overt displays of emotion/anger and taking it out on… Public businesses that had nothing to do with the matter at hand #rational.
I’d align myself as a moderate or dare I say (shudders) “conservative Democrat”. I believe this is the correct terminology.
If Republicans/conservatives got on board with climate change, sexual health/abortion, drug law reform and healthcare I’d probably switch over. I imagine this will be the new “Republican” 40 years from now
It doesn’t have to be that way, but if there’s ever to be anything resembling logical cohesion in government policy it will not flow from the fountain of woke thought. It won’t blossom in a social media censorship environment. Money falling out of the sky warps people’s perceptions of incentive and value. Massive, coordinated efforts at curating people’s perceptions of reality through fact-free narratives are not, in my opinion, bringing my society to a better place.
Xi Xingping would probably disagree.
A logically coherent government that still takes human imperfection into account won’t come from open borders, deliberately-muddied election systems, defunding the police, broader urban decay or the layers upon layers of misguided liberal policies that seem to coincide with a 0.17 GPA placing a student in the top half of the class. This is happening in a major American city in the year 2021.
At this point for me it is either the Republicans (in the USA at least) or perhaps some very far-off third party. But I understand why you feel you may side with the wokesters on some issues. Republicans in the USA are actually a lot more receptive than you imagine to what you’re talking about, aside from abortion in most cases. Even then there’s room for discussion.
If they switched places in terms of military prowess, I think there would be no more Israel right now lol. Israel would be wiped off the map so fast it would look like a Looney Tunes cartoon.
(For oversensitive dudes, this is just hyperbole with a little bit of humor thrown in. Mostly. Don’t fuck with Israel. Lots of people don’t know what they’re really capable of.)
Aha! You spelt his name wrong. Wacist!
That’s really what some idiots in China would say.
The same idiots who got mad some time ago when a Japanese dude erroneously spelt the word “Chinese” as “Chainese” as if the word spelt right is even a fucking “Chinese” word. It’s NOT in our vocabulary. It’s probably an English word or something. I don’t fucking know nor do I give a flying fuck. If it’s a “Chinese” word, that would be the CORRECT way the first syllable should be spelt.
This is NOT hyperbole.
Stupid internet.
You know, my views on “political correctness” and “social justice” fall slightly on the side of “I don’t like some of it but it’s necessary as a whole”. The problem is the current overcorrection(yes, we’re seeing some of it over here too and lots of it is absurd since our histories are completely different but some idiots are trying to apply the same shit they get from the US) and the government getting involved.
Stupid internet.
Fucking “socialist” wannabes. You want a real “People’s Movement”? Stop whining to, and compelling the GOVERNMENT to do this shit for you or all you’re telling me is that you’ve not even been weaned off your mother’s tits yet.
Go volunteer and make changes at least on a micro/ground level first in your free time. Why the fuck are you using that time to post shit you don’t even understand on social media while sharing dog and cat pics at the same time? It doesn’t have the sense of “grandeur” you have in your prepubescent minds?
Viva la fucking Government led resistance.
Soooooooo many kids advocating for socialism nowdays without having the slightest clue as to what socialism actually entails.
This guy?
The concept of Sunni desert Arabs with a limitless military budget and massive amounts of hardware has already been tested in real life. They can’t fight, as has their performance against barefoot Shiite Houthis has shown. That’s why KSA and UAE, despite buying billions worth of weaponry need the US to do the actual fighting against Iran.
The Israelis, Kurds, Shiites…they can fight. Desert Arabs, including Palestinians? Nope. A honorable mention goes out to the Ottomans who ran the show for 250 years - and kept the peace in the ME - but I’m not sure about the current Turkish Army as they’re relying more and more on Islamist proxies.
A far cry from general Kemal memorably ordering the gazi to charge the ANZACs at Gallipoli with empty guns.
Saladin was a Kurd. The Mamluks were not made up of Middle Eastern peoples.
