And what are the statistics on crimes committed that might lead to this? Like murder and robbery. I’ll give you one guess.
Unfortunately, we have seen rioting. The Tottenham riots of 2011 (I think) were caused by the death in custody of a black man. There is currently rioting (in a fairly low-level British-reserved way) in Barrow over the sexual exploitation of a young woman and the authorities’ failure to communicate in a timely and coherent manner what they intend to do about the perpetrators.
I agree about the even-handed application of the law. Rioters should not be exempt from criminal charges for actions carried out during the riot. In Britain, in the wake of the Tottenham riots, we instituted a law saying that any person caught in a riot would be held accountable for any action undertaken by that riot.
And I understand your point about Justine Damond. While regrettable certainly, I’d imagine the community that would have been shocked most by that crime had a degree more faith in the justice system than do African American communities who have seen police murder largely dismissed. Even today, people in positions of authority are trying to dismiss this one (“if he can say “I can’t breathe”, he’s breathing”). Rioting isn’t the answer, but not rioting isn’t getting them anywhere either.
My only point, and I’ll go back to it, is that what we are seeing is the outcome of a failure of political leadership to address grievances in a manner that lead people to have faith in the grievance-redress system. In the UK, the Barrow unrest is because the authorities aren’t giving faith that the victim will see justice. In the US, exactly the same. And frankly, I don’t know who Killer Mike is, but when the best leadership is coming from a guy with a name like that, I think maybe the political offices are a bit vacant. ![]()
lol, way to abandon your first set of stats when they are shown to actually go against your argument.
Please, provide the statistics you speak of. i would be happy to look at the crimes of black folks killed by cops vs the crimes of white folks killed by cops.
Specifically, what was the crime of Michael Floyd when an officer knelt on his neck smiling until the life left him? Murder, or robbery perhaps? Assault? What?
Again how much outrage did you see over this?
Are you American? Blacks have a history in this country that is very different from other races. The only ones who could be compared are Indians. When a white is a victim of excessive force it is not seen as being part of a larger history of oppression.
With that said, there have been riots by whites (the Irish in Boston and NYC, for example).
While mentioning Boston, look up the reaction to forced busing in the early 70s.
Do you have a point?
If you want to live in a peaceful productive, and safe society, you can’t take the law into your own hands, or have mob rule, unless its very specific exigent circumstances like you are in immediate fear of your life. At the very least violence is not the first port of call, like what is going on now, and should be left to when you have exhausted all other options.
I’d hate to think what would happen to all the good POC who would get caught up in the mayhem if white people started to behave badly en masse. It would be a fucking massacre. Guess what most white people don’t want that to happen, that’s why we show restraint. Don’t mistake it as a weakness.
As for the British muslim rape culture, the rest of the UK are lobbying government to expose the political coverup, so they haven’t yet exhausted all avenues. There is still hope of a peaceful resolution. You might want to give it a chance sometimes? Better than having to kill someone.
So your point is that white folks are pussies and are happy to let other white people get unjustly killed at the hands of cops in a cruel manner?
That seems like race baiting to me. Stop race baiting.
I knew this was coming. Trying to say racism isn’t an issue for black people with the mountains of historical data showing how they are treated differently by cops, the justice system, etc is an impossible feat but it’s always fun when one tries do it.
Lmao at look how many white people get shot while failing to even mention the amount of white people in the country vs black.
Have you lived in the ghetto? It is none of those things.
No it wouldn’t because it would mean white people would have to go to places that they avoid. White flight in reverse? I don’t think so.
No I did not. More white people are killed by cops every year that is a fact. Based on population you wrote “black folks are disproportionally affected by police shootings” so, I gave you a reason as to why that is. Do your own research.
What did Tony Timpa do?
You mean you’re upset that the killing of a white man by the police didn’t spark riots? I assume you’re white, and are therefore part of the community hit hard by this murder?
I guess, therefore, you ought to ask yourself why you didn’t riot?
Maybe it’s because you’re lucky enough that you know this is extremely unlikely to happen to you the next time you step out the door? Maybe it’s because you’re lucky enough that it’s not happened to anyone you know, or someone who you know knows? Maybe it’s because you’re lucky enough that you know the perpetrators will be brought to justice because there aren’t moronic chiefs of police and POTUSes downplaying the act?
If this was a credible threat to you, if every community you knew had been touched in some way by a cousin, friend of a friend, friend of a friend of a friend having a personal story related to police violence, if you had absolutely zero trust that the murderers of your people would be held to account by a system that appears intent on sweeping it under the carpet or exonerating them, maybe you’d riot, eh?
Stop and Frisk in NYC was deemed unconstitutional because…
I do think it’s counter productive but I can understand the outrage no doubt. We piss all over the peaceful protests anyways. Colin K became Bin Laden for taking a knee, ALL LIVES MATTER, these athletes should just play the game and not wear a I can’t breathe shirt, etc.
And? You want a glass of milk to wash down your oppression?
Correct me if i am wrong here, but white folks have been the dominant race in Britain for quite a while? Do you see how white folks in Britain might feel differently than black folks in america about abuse and perceived institutional cover-up by the police?
Lmao. Right. Here let me point out something that’s beyond flawed without context and then give you a reason why the point you’re going to make happens.
Can you explain why black people are so much more likely to be pulled over and searched? Can you explain why that happens even though a pulled over white person is more likely to have contraband? Why are we pulling people over close to 4 times more often if they are found to have less items on them?
Good post overall but I am incredibly thankful we do NOT have that kind of law on the books in the US.
Not to mention the cover-up was hardly to prevent the crimes being publicised, but more to keep a lid on how piss-poor the local plod’s investigations were. Ironically, the cover-up was intended to do exactly what I’ve been saying is critical; keep the population’s faith in the justice system and that their grievances will get addressed!
Wrong. I am not white and was born in South LA, Watts. Not that your foreign ass would know what that means.
I have had good and bad experiences with cops.
