Geek S**T

No way, 720p HD recording or at least 480p, with built in HDD for storage. Or, a device that takes SDHC cards (even better).

Something like that should be out by now…

EDIT:

See?

This: http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/sanyo-xacti-hd700-7mp-mpeg-4-high-definition-720p-camcorder-with-5x-optical-zoom-silver

Or this: http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/sanyo-xacti-e1-waterproof-digital-camcorder

Don’t know about reviews, though, but I had heard of Sanyo’s waterproof H.264 line of camcorders. DiVX would be fine, too, but H.264 is better, as is waterproofing.

What are the bad things about the one I posted?

I had something similar a few years ago. I made a holster for it a strapped it to my mountain bike for some cool downhill footage blazing through the woods. While the concept was pretty cool, the resolution really let me down.

The item you are looking at lists the video quality as “VGA quality”, it doesn’t even give a resolution in the specs. If you hook that thing up to a HDTV and play the video full screen, it’s going to look like shit.

If you are even slightly concerned about video quality(like if you are planning on bolting it to your CBR and blasting through some twisties or something)I would look at spending a bit more cash.

My insane friend who takes photo recreationally has just informed me he’s buying one of these.

Crazy.

the new 24 mp one? I wonder how good the high ISO performance is.

I would KILL for a Nikon D700 with a 24-70 mm f2.8 lens. Though, the lens itself is like $1600 brand new and the camera is $2800…

Waiting on the reviews of the D90. The new CMOS sensor looks to be sweet (and bettered in the D90 than in the D300) and the limit of the DX sensor format.

Looks like my 360 is going bye-bye (for now).

Went to play Madden 09 tonight, turned the 360 on, put the disc in and before I can do anything, I get the dreaded RROD. I turned the console off, took the disc out, put it back in and was able to play through my game without issue, but it’s likely only a matter of time before the thing dies.

So, I’ll be calling M$ and getting it replaced.

The PS3 looks more and more tempting, especially since I’m geeking-out my PSP.

I know I haven’t heard anyone having to return the PS3 in mass numbers because of malfunctions. I haven’t had a problem with mine yet.

The only issue I’ve heard about the PS3 is that there’s a secondary fan that will kick on when it’s doing a lot of processing. It’s very loud.

Apparently, there’s some app you can download that will peg the PS3’s processor when you PS3 is idle (like if you’re watching a DVD). I haven’t downloaded this app, so it hasn’t been an issue for me.

The only other scenario is that if your PS3 has bad ventilation of if your place of residence is hotter than normal, it can cause the secondary fan to kick on.

This happened to me recently, but it was because my air conditioning stopped working. The secondary fan is very loud. It’s about as loud as the 360 is by default. Once I got the air conditioning working again, the secondary fan stopped kicking on.

My long-ass point is here that the only problem I’ve encountered with my PS3 was my air conditioning’s fault.

I went ahead and bought this one and I am surprised at how good the video quality is. This is obviously not professional photography, but my last hand held camcorder looked about the same or worse.

The specs from the website:
Resolution 640 x 480
Sensor 1/4" VGA CMOS sensor
Large 5.6 µm pixels for maximum light sensitivity
Light Sensitivity Very high sensitivity (>2.0V/lux-sec) with automatic low light detection
Video Compression Pure Digital Video Engine 2.5
Frame Rate 30 frames per second (constant frame rate, progressive scan)
Average Bitrate 4.0Mbps (auto-adaptive algorithm) 2.8Mbps (auto-adaptive algorithm)
Video Format Advanced Profile MPEG-4 AVI
White Balance & Exposure Auto-adaptive white/black balance and exposure

Because of the price, I would actually recommend this one if the goal is decent video quality and compact size.

The main negatives are that there is no night vision. There is also no image stabilization so if your hands aren’t steady, it will look like you live on an active fault line.

It also comes with the software built into the camera so that you can edit videos from any computer. It is rechargeable and charges while plugged into the usb port much like the iPod does (this might actually be a negative if traveling).

X and Vader,
Agreed. I’ve done a lot of reading of various gaming forums and rarely hear a complaint about the PS3. I had a PSOne and PS2 and never had a problem with either.

Only problem is, I’ve already sunk a good chunk of money into my 360 library, that if I went to a PS3, I’d basically be giving away the 360 for nothing. I doubt that the Mrs. would approve of a $400 purchase for another console when that money can be used for a number of projects around our house.

Hopefully my “new” 360 will work just fine. This one lasted almost 2 years, which compared to a lot of people, is pretty good.

biiiiiig thumbs up for Brothers in Arms - Hell’s Highway.

So what about the difference in game libraries between the PS3 and the 360? Seems like so many great titles are out for the 360, or maybe it’s just the marketing that has me convinced as such…

If I can afford both next year, I will buy both.

For the 24 Mp camera, how does the sensor size compare on cameras with that much resolution? Are they the same size as the 10 mp but denser? I’m wondering how it affects the focal length of the lenses.

I shouldn’t be thinking about such things though. It’s creating an appetite for a new camera.

Microsoft seems to be pretty aggressive as far as getting to many game designers first (at least it seems that way from documentaries on video games that I’ve seen). Considering the faults with their machinery, they would have to in order to stay ahead.

I think in the end they will be about equal in that regard. The problem is, people tend to stay loyal to one machine (or company). If you can catch them early on, few will have the resources or drive to buy both systems.

I recommend the PS3 because they really put some thought into how the machine works. It is very smooth to control and being able to play all media through one machine easily that doesn’t get “RROD” is pretty bad ass.

It may take another year or two for PS3 to match or surpass the X-box in terms of games available.

Anyone else looking forward to Far Cry 2?

Looks like it’s going to be quite a bit better. For one, there’s no mutants this time. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m going to have to hurry up and get a new pc. My current one won’t be able to play it.

I’m very excited! Supposedly there won’t be a pc demo though.

Same here… I mean, I’ll be able to play it on my laptop for now, but definitely won’t get the most out of it.
I’ve been spending way too much on food lately, so I’ll have to hold off on the new pc for a while though. :frowning:
