Only singling out this point, I don’t think it’s as true as you think. The graphical chasm between PC and this console generation is widening at an alarming rate. Even though Sony/MS both see their consoles as having ‘life’ left in them, if they don’t put new hardware out soon they will be dwarfed by exceptionally cheap PCs(a $400 machine can get you BF3 at high graphics settings and steady frames, and PC parts go down in price much faster).

If they play the waiting game for 3 more years they are risking losing the foothold that has essentially revitalized the console as a system in the first place(FPS’s - no I’m not saying consoles don’t have other good games, but they became the console movers where they used to be a PC staple).
I don’t think many Xbox or Playstation users will be jumping ship and playing more computer games because the graphics are better. There will always be a huge amount of people who specifically only play on a gaming console. Like Professor X said, I love my PS3. It plays blu rays, tons of games, digital movies, netflix, etc… I agree with others when I don’t think a newer generation console needs to come out soon. I’d say maybe 2013-2014 at the earliest.
I said above 2014 is when I expect it personally. I think 2015 and beyond is just waiting far too long. Graphics may not be so crazy right now, but given more time it has a huge effect. There’s more to it then just graphics, but it is the issue the points out the hardware gap the most effectively so it’s easier to just cite them.
There are really only two reasons to develop a new console:

 1. The consumers want it.
 2. The developers have maxed the potential of the existing machines.

I don’t believe either of these criteria have been met yet.

PC gamers like to bring up graphics all the time. For those that have stopped playing games on PC or were never big on playing on the PC it’s a pretty weak argument. The real argument is what level is the console preforming at and what is its maximum output? As that gap closes then the need for a new console increases.

Comparing the graphics performance of PCs and consoles is retarded. It’s apples and oranges. The PC as a class will always have the potential to be the better performing machine, but how many PCs are hooked up to 50" plasma/LCD TVs? Or played while sprawled out across the couch?

Here my take on the next generation of consoles:

Neither Sony or Microsoft really feel a threat from Nintendo’s 2012 release date for the Wii U, that being said, I’m sure both are hard at work on the next console. I think a 2013 date is probably in the ball park for both companies. I would bet both companies are looking at slower sales on existing consoles as a trigger for release of a new one.

I don’t think Sony needs to do much work for a new PS model - upgrade the PS3’s video (faster gpu with more memory), storage (more space, ssd drive), and memory (more), but can leave the cell processor alone.

Microsoft and Sony can convince consumers to buy a new console if the price is right (and there will always be people who have to have the latest and greatest, price be damned), so I doubt that comes into play. I will never buy a launch console again after having several die on me, too many issues at launch that are fixed with subsequent models.

Also, even if the console has a 10 year life cycle, that doesn’t stop them from coming out with a new one, thus supporting 2 consoles for a time period (Sony did this with PS2 and PS3).

Most consumers (and game developers) may not be screaming for new consoles yet, until they show off what they can do, and then I’m sure there will be mobs of people demanding them, and even though the developers might not want it, they will play along to get their $ too.

For me, the next generation of consoles will mostly be set apart by the software they come with, and at the moment, Nintendo is a distant third in my opinion.

At this point nintendo isn’t even on the board for me and I think that is a damn shame.

Alright X, question.

Should you or I make a Batman Arkham City thread?

I have completed about 3% last night after about 3 hours.

man, I didn’t even want to put it in last night because I couldn’t devote even a full hour to it. I held back but will likely be into that all saturday afternoon.

I will be sure to download the catwoman thing from PSN tonight though.

Being a grown up sux.

Lol, here I am about 30 minutes into playing after downloading and setting up.

The 18 year old step son sitting with me commenting how its cool just to watch people play this game.

Wife comes home, about 30 minutes later walks up stairs, sits beside me. “So is this where you are going to be for the next 5 hours.” Damn, shit, fuck. “No love just going to play for a bit more”

Had to go back much later and play for a little longer.

I will be gone the next two days out for business, and will not get back until late Friday night.

So yea I got no real play time until maybe Saturday.

Very saddened by this news as I feel Kevin Conroy is Batman and Mark Hamill is the Joker

What news?

Sorry my bad he isn’t going to voice the Joker anymore

Oh. thought he died.

I liked him as the Joker. He nailed it…over and over.

Dude is getting older though. Maybe he’s just tired…or maybe he is straining his voice to be in character that long.

Either way, he did the role justice and no one will forget it.

I hear you. I’ve been playing like mad since I’m gonna be out of town for a few weeks. Pretty bad ass game. The stat tracker is pretty nice. Main story is 42% complete, and side quests are 35% complete. Then there’s the 200 some odd street brawls I’ve instigated. The riddler challenges are damn infuriating. I figure out half the puzzle then I realize I need a certain gadget upgrade before I can complete the other half of it.

I need the gadget that puts my wife to sleep and then lets me play.

Oh yea I have that gadget, God gave it to me.

I cant stay up that late anymore I am getting old.

4:15 am comes early

The next DC animated film, Doom, way cool can’t wait I’m getting Batman Year One today.

Arkham City. Playing straight to the Joker mission. After this, will roam around until I get the urge to stop fighting people in the street.

Don’t think I’m going to be getting much done.

Year One was a little disappointing. Good, just not as good as Red Hood.

Skyrim hands on:

I still like some of the Nintendo games - I own a Wii in additon to my PS3 and the Mario Galaxy games are still some of my favorites, but I don’t ever invision a Nintendo system being my main gaming system again and any Nintendo system I own will really be for Nintendo exclusives only.

Some of you guys might find this interesting/funny/whatevs

I’m pretty sure he said the same thing after Arkham Asylum, so I say wait and see if it really pans out or not.
