Looking at building a new gaming system. Been out of the loop the last few years with what is on the market. Currently I’m thinking about the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 graphics card. 8GB RAM (minimum) … i7 processor (will settle with a mid market option as I am not paying more than $400 for a processor).
Mainly because I NEEED an upgrade to run GTA 5 when it is released.
Box will be a big ass one not sure which one I’m going for just yet. HDD will be a minimum 1TB.
Generally won’t buy a game for 1 to 2 years from release date so this system should in theory last me until 2015 before I need to look for an ugrade.
Any recommendations from the T-Gamers?

Do you want to overclock or not?

Do you read/understand German? That would help a great deal ![]()
Anyway…
Answer these:
How much money do you want to spend (consider that depending on what/how much/how often you earn, it can be a much better idea to go with a 900-1000 Euro (for example) machine that is current top of the line (as far as components that actually make sense for a gaming pc… 32 or even 16 gigs of ram for example do not help currently… An SSD is sort of nice for quick booting but not needed for game performance and the big ones are terribly expensive) or even a cheaper one… And simply buy a new one every 1-2 years… Rather than trying to be future-proof with tech that may out-perform the other option now but will be just as obsolete soon because of changing demands in the future.
Do you want to overclock?
What resolution are you playing on? (probably 1920, but oh well.)
Is saving energy an issue?
Do you need a particularly quiet machine?
Listen via sound system or headphones?
Any other things you want to do with it, or is it gaming only?
Cheers!
Yeah I do read/understand German
If the link does not post, e-mail me.
In that forum you can also find threads on RAM and vRAM usage and so on.
Click on “Hinweise zum System” as well (below the component line-up).
(check the 900+ Euro options)
With the smaller resolution you’re using, a 570 also ought to be enough for a few years to come. Note that the hardware links in that thread do not apply/ship to your country (I think), so you just plug in the names of whatever card etc was recommended into whatever hardware site you use to buy in Australia.
Thanks mate much appreciated. I’ll have a good look through it.
NP.
Gives info on overclocking etc as well (and more if you use the search function… There is a guide section as well that has lots of useful stuff in it).
Agree with all the above except (at least here) the price premium for a 2500k over a 2400 is almost nothing and since it’s so easy to overclock it there’s no reason to save 10 bucks when you could get 4,5 GHz instead of 3.1, which would probably let you keep those parts of the system way longer. And since there’s no processor that really beats it in games, it’s a relative bargain.
Asus P8Z68 V-PRO
2500k
Antec 620
8 GB RAM
Crucial M4 128 GB SSD
some old HDDs, while waiting for the price to drop again.
Asus 560 Ti 448.
Corsair TX750 V2
Fractal Design Define R3
Got a pretty good deal. Very happy with it.

Almost exactly the system I just built. Including the price of a shiny new 24" 75hz 2ms LED monitor it was still ~$700.
The only change I’d make if I were wanting my system to last much longer and spend a little more money would be an i7 2600k. As far as GPU goes, save money on it now, since you’re only planning on playing in 1440x you don’t need a super card, pocket that cash for a stepping stone card in 2 years that will bridge that gap you may be worried about before you have to totally revamp the system on a new mobo in 2015-2016(tbh if you really want to you could probably stretch it much longer than that if you start to play games on low graphics settings, but who does that =p).
Nice setup Kakno.
Hunting around from the links C_C posted and I can get the 850 euro setup for under $1000 AUD which I am happy with (this includes suitable box + 720w power supply). Might be able to get even lower if I buy from the wholesale market locally but may not be able to source all parts from there.
red04 - my dad has told me to get the i7 but I’m not sure … I’ve got GeForce 9800 GT currently (1GB DDR3) which I would of ideally liked to retain so I could fork out a little more cash on the processor … but its a dud model. As soon as the temp in the room hits 30 degrees celcius it goes spastic … GPU overheats … screen pixelates and the game crashes. Tried everything from adding more fans … to opening the case to aiming a Vornado fan at it!! lol! Games run smooth on max graphics … for about 5 minutes before it dies.
Cash isn’t an issue as I easily save $900 per fortnight as I have very little expenses … but at the same time I’m saving for equity on a house ya know? ![]()

Damn. That’s ridiculously cheap.

Hyper threading rarely makes much of a difference in games though, does it?
Seems like money better spent on a better graphics card or a new monitor.

Lol. At least something good with a Swedish winter. 17 degrees celsius where my computer is ![]()

It’s just the clock upgrade really, but ya it’s not a huge difference unless you are doing things like streaming/recording your games(pretty much the only thing you’ll see hardware enthusiasts suggest an i7 for).
I’m with you on the new monitor thing though, with his budget I see no reason not to get a solid HD monitor, and then invest in a good high end GPU to make use of it. The other suggestion would be a small SSD for his OS and most used games, with his required 1tb drive as a storage unit for media(that way it can be 5400 rpm, much cheaper, which isn’t negligible given HD price raise in late 2011).
The way I do it is spend the extra money on a case and modular PSU that you can keep for close to a decade or longer. A nice solid case will last damn near forever in technology terms and Corsair PSU’s come with 7year+ warranties - I’ve never had a Corsair PSU fail on me.
The rest of the components will all likely have to be swapped out when you do an upgrade 5 years down the line.
I built this now 2 years ago and it should still hold out for another 2-3 years fairly well.
Gigabyte UD7 Mobo (USB 3.0 & SATA 3)
i7 920 (Sandy Bridge i5’s are now even stronger than the previous gen i7’s)
12gb RAM
80gb Primary SSD
1tb secondary HDD
Geforce GTX285
Cost me around $2200 back then.
I think those specs are still fairly up-to-date even now, besides the CPU and GFX which you can swap out for something more powerful now without paying any more.

The Antec P183 cases are still my favourites. Not too expensive, sound insulated and nice layout for the components.
Granted with all the fans I have in mine it sounds like an engine in the summer, but with some basic closed water cooling systems it is very quiet.
With the money you save on a good system you could always upgrade your monitor to one that uses 1920 x 1080.
I built a new PC about a year and half ago for $800-$900. The only thing I may need to upgrade within the next 2-3 years is the graphics card.
Tomshardware is another good site to check out. They provide reviews on new hardware and do a new article every month on what’s the current best cpu and gpu performace wise and the best for it’s price.
For instance 2500k is currently the best cpu. Sure the 2600k performs better (not much) but it costs like an extra hundred dollars and you’d likely have to spend extra money on a mobo. So the 2500k is the best bang for your buck.

that was by far the most awesome Superman story line ever.
All your photos must be photo shopped. You must be really a 14 year old Chinese girl with too much time on her hands. CT and Tim are in on it and the videos are fake. Must be.
Very elaborate. Impressive.
j/k, I came to this thread too late but it was funny that 3 buddies and I just YESTERDAY were discussing our favorite Superman story line and it was All Star Superman for all of us. Even my 17 year old, who just started reading Superman 2 years ago, chimed in and said that was the best by far.
All of us old farts too (43 myself) and all of us avid collectors since very young (bought my first Superman at age 4). Doesn’t mean anything really ![]()
May I ask, even though the thread went back to games and such, what IS your favorite Superman story line? Are you following the New DC 52, if so, you likey?
Oh, and Happy New Year to all of you!

Prof X was referring the DC’s animated movie All Star Superman, which was far less awesome than the maxiseries by the same name. Basically, DC tried to fit too many stories into the 70 minute time frame and the end result felt choppy and rushed. Now if DC had made each issue a seperate 15 minute short and tossed them in the bonus features that would have been supremely cool.
