It’s got some week acting and a paper-thin plot, but the action’s pretty cool; I’m all about the gore. I certainly liked it much more than the Thomas Jane one…though I’m not sure if I liked it more than the Dolph Lundgren one.

Agreed, but I don’t think it was just the acting that was weak but the dialog. Whoever wrote the script came up with pretty one dimensional characters.

For Frank, that’s all he is. It doesn’t work for everyone else.

-Weak Story
-Weak script
-Great gore scenes. This may be the most bullet wounds to the forehead in a movie.

I don’t understand how they didn’t get everything right this time.

This was the best Frank Castle and actually was closer to the graphic novels than the others.

Yep, bad characters, plot holes and over-the-top bad accents. Dominic West (Jigsaw) is normally great in other movies (and on The Wire), so I’m wondering if the accents and acting were an intentional choice by the director.

I thought the action and violence was great though and I think that Ray Stevenson was a great choice for Frank Castle.

I watched the making of and now blame the director for everything. The whole movie felt like it was made by someone who didn’t understand the culture in New York. It actually had some good actors in it (even including that weird guy who was on X-files as the guy who could stretch and crawl through small spaces to kill people). It was the overdone accents that killed it and every foreign actor in that movie has been in enough other movies for us to know they really can get an American accent down whenever they please.

It is like the director walked in and forced everyone to be as unreal as possible.
Was it me or did everyone have an Australian accent?

NORTH CAROLINA UP IN THIS BITCH!

You know it!

And if Max Payne 3 is even close to as good as the first two I might have to take some vacation days when it comes out.

Motherfuck. Am I the only person who didn’t play these games because they looked like gigantic turds? Anyone I’ve talked to always say they were pretty badass… I don’t know. Maybe I should’ve played them, but from what I saw, niether one looked very fun.
Anything from Rockstar games was worth playing then(and now)…hell, they gave us GTA.

I never played Max Payne 2, but the first was all kinds of awesome. Pretty much everything about it was just fantastic, and in my opinion, it still hasn’t been surpassed with respect to bullet-time.

I agree…and there was no game that was darker…or grittier…even surpassing their own GTA series in that aspect. With all they have put in GTA series,Max Payne 3 should be no less than extraordinary. Especially if done on same engine as GTA IV.

It will also be cool if they use “moving” 3D style graphic novel panels for the cutscenes(think Sin City) to keep that graphic novel feel the previous games had. Hopefully this involves the original developers,Remedy, but this will still be good either way.

I found an interesting article over at GameInformer about symphonic concerts featuring soundtracks from video games. I’ve always been a fan of orchestras and symphonies. Over the past year I got to see the Transiberian Orchestra just after Christmas, and in Lafayette I saw the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra play a 2 hour tribute to Lead Zeppelin. Looks like I got a few more venues to check out.

A quote I liked from Arnie Roth, a conductor/director for two of the featured symphonies, Distant Worlds and Play!.

“Both Dear Friends and Distant Worlds are performed completely live by a full symphony orchestra and chorus, without any pre-recorded tracks at all. The orchestras featured are among the very best ensembles in the world. They are often also the local presenters in the various cities on the world tour of Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy, so there is a direct connection between the audiences and the local symphony orchestras from their cities, and quite a major and important music education element to these concerts as well. The orchestra and chorus are truly the featured artists, not relegated to back-up roles. Fans are excited to hear the music of arguably the greatest videogame composer, Nobuo Uematsu, in a spectacular concert hall, performed by some of the world?s greatest orchestras. We are bringing in a whole new wave of audience members to these concerts that may have never, or very rarely, experienced a concert event like this.”
– Arnie Roth

If you have never experienced a symphonic orchestra and enjoy the music from games like Halo, Warcraft, Medal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Myst, etc… Then definitely check these groups out and see if anyone is coming to a hall near you.

Here are the web pages for the three featured symphonies and their concerts.

I was listening to an NPR show that had little bits of a quartet covering Zeppelin. It was awesome. I played violin a lot when I was younger, and did the quartet thing…I might’ve stuck with it if I could play Stairway instead of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

LOL. Everybody has to learn that specific Mozart piece. EVERYBODY. I used to play bass, I know exactly what you’re talking about.

Right, I’m HDMI cable shopping.

I already have 2 1.5m ones, but I am in the market for a 15m one that will run around the room.

Now I wouldn’t spend a stupid amount of money on a short cable, but does a 15m cable mean I should pay for a higher quality cable because of potential signal degradation?

Anyone know?

damn…the geeks are falling off around here.

Definitely not! In general, you really don’t have to worry about signal degradation with HDMI cables. Unless you live somewhere where there are super high levels of interference, or next to a nuclear reactor or something.

I bought my 15 footer from cables unlimited, by way of newegg.com. I think I only paid $12 for it and it hasn’t let me down at all.

I’ve read on a few forums that you may experience “sparkles” in the picture with distances 50’ and over. Do you not think this is a possibility?

At the moment the cheapest 50’ cable I’ve found here is $25. A “better quality” one which I have my eye on is $72.

Edit:

Cable 1.

Cable 2.

Damn you and your metric system! I thought you said 15 feet, not 15 meters. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously though, I’ve always read that with HDMI cables that since it’s a digital signal, that signal degradation isn’t really a possibility.

Just a small Last Airbender update. Jesse McCartney out…Dev Patel in as Prince Zukko.

Hmm? I don’t know. But I have notice that other casting choices for Fire Nation characters might suggest them being Southwest Asian/Indian…and Earth Nation with East Asian people.

The only known photo of Noah Ringer(cast as Aang) floating around the interwebz. He was supposedly 5? years old here. Cool…the Avatar is from Texas…ha.

edit I’m having issue attaching picture for some reason.

Thanks AV, I’ll maul it over and look around some more. I’m sure short cables don’t make any difference but over a long distance there may be.

On another note, I finally got round to playing RE5 over the weekend (Saturday 7pm to Sunday 2pm) - it’s good, but my only gripe is that it’s no where near as scary as I remember RE2 being.

I thought . . .

Air tribe = Tibetan
Fire = Japanese
Water = Inuit
Earth = Chinese

?

Fuck, as long as we get a cast that at least captures the diverse cultures, as well as people who are at least passable at pretending to do fake MA, I’ll be almost happy.

Nope. “Higher quality cable” is the biggest farce in electronics, my friend. Electrons don’t know the difference; they practically travel at the speed of light, anyway.

Seriously. Go grab Magnavox A/V cables and enjoy signal quality the same as Monster cable (gold plated).

The only thing that matters when wiring over great distances is magnetic shielding.

I understand that it’s digital, so it doesn’t (shouldn’t) matter. However over long distances signal degrades varying amounts depending on the type of material used. Fibre optic, for example can be run for something like 1400’, whereas other materials won’t allow for such distances.

This was an interesting bit of research:

They also suggest the signal degrades in three links within this article:

While I’m certain that is won’t matter over a length of 3-5’, when you get into further lengths would this not become a problem? I’ve read some peoples experiences vary when using HDMI over long distances, and many drew the conclusion that it was also part down to the hardware used on both ends.

There is also the idea of “future proofing” for higher quality technologies with cables that allow for higher data rates.
