Gas Prices

what could bring gas pricies down would be the American auto industry at least attempting to look like they are trying to put measures in place that would save gas or increase mileage. This would put back pressure on the OPEC community to drop prices to possibly lessen the immediate need for new technology.

As long as the American consumer appears to be ok with price aka buying Hummers and 8mpg suv’s while gas prices hold at 2.50 per gallon—what incentive isa there to drop the price?

Sure, OPEC may be a collusive oligopoly, but a much simpler reason for high gas prices is that Americans are willing to pay the high prices.

Our prices are squat compared to the rest of the world. See the beginning when we compared prices and converted from litres to gallons.

Ummmm…I wouldn’t complain too much. Judging by your responses, I reckon you’d all have conniption fits if you saw the price we have to pay for gas/petrol in the UK

Isn’t the high prices in the UK due to extreme taxes and regulations by your government?

Yup, and the prices are also kept high so that other companies - that don’t actually source the oil, like Esso does - can compete on a level playing field. Either way, it’s the consumer that loses out.

The government’s happy with the current price-fixing situation as it fills the pockets of the big companies, and it also fits in with their plans to get people to stop driving as much.

Forty f–king dollars for fifteen gallons.

$2.75 a gallon in my neck of the woods.

$2.46, .56, .66, as of this morning.

Gas is $2.69, and 10 cents cheaper for 10% ethanol blend. I was visiting the casino across the border in Iowa, and while there filled up at $2.48 a gallon.

I said this before, but the reason prices are so high is because of some emotional investors pushing prices up. When inventories are higher then a year ago, but prices are still as high as they are, there is no logic, other then the same “logic” used to push up the price of worthless internet companies 5 years ago, and you know what happened there.

There is also the lack of refineries, which can be blamed on both the oil companies, and the environmentalists, and (last I heard) 14 different blends of oil, causing the refineries to stop production, scrub the tanks, and set up to refine different gas.

Ultimately it is up to us though. Use less gas.
Do you check your tires weekly? Tuned up your car lately? When the light turns green, how far does your foot go toward the floor? Did you know a clogged air filter can reduce mileage by as much as 10%?

Do you drive out of your way to save a few cents on gas? Not worth it if you are just burning your savings in the extra trip, and if you are saving anything, it is lost due to the fact that everyone doing that uses enough gas to keep prices that much higher.

Thought of riding your bike just once every other week instead of driving?

I know this is boring shit, but it does help, especially if everyone does it.

In about 5 years I believe half of all cars sold will be a hybrid. Hopefully the trucking industry will start using hybrid trucks. That will have a dramatic effect on our consumption of oil. I mean Fed-Ex and UPS are getting into hybrids, so why not the whole trucking industry? Also GM is selling hybrid buses. A Shreveport Louisiana as well as Yosemite each just purchased one, and I read of another city that bought a fleet.

My energy sector analysts laugh at the governments excuses and the oil companies’ excuses for the rising price of gasoline.

My energy sector analysts are in unanimous agreement that gas prices rise as a result of artificially created reserve shortages each and every summer.

Everything else is BS.

This is an economics issue and is not partisan. Every president (left or right) has to let the big oil companies do this.

It is further proof out political system is corrupt.

Taxes make up on average 38% of the pump price in Canada. Our federal government even taxes the taxes in the fuel (applying a goods and services tax to the excise tax). Less than 7% of what they collect goes back to highway and road renewal.

Anyway, the Opposition Leader is calling on the government to offer some tax relief and this is what Finance Minister Ralph Goodale said yesterday:

“The dilemma is, there is not an easy way to make sure if governments, either federal or provincial, were to change their tax structures, would that actually result in money in the pockets of consumers?”

Who votes for these guys??? Never mind, I just thought of someone who does.

Let’s drill in Alaska…

Yeah – but it is a 172 mile commute for me – guess I would have to leave alittle bit earlier!

172 miles? You spend 3 hours driving each way? 6 hours a day? Maybe you need to move closer or look for a different job.

If you moved to 50 miles away from work, you would save 2,440 gallons of gas a year, assuming 25mpg.

This is probably the ultimate goal of the oil companies. Maybe even why OPEC is bottlenecking the supply. To scare Americans into allowing drilling in Alaska.

that’s $5368

How would the US drilling for oil in Alaska benefit foreign oil companies? Please, oh please, explain this vast conspiracy to me…

It has to do with the illuminati, who control the military industrial complex, who deal with the Majestic 12, who in turn control Jessica Alba, who controls all men through hooha and booty shaking. (I know she controls me.)
