This deal is pretty much done. This automatically makes the C’s a contender in the weak East, and probably one of the top 5 teams in the Conference, along with the Cavs, Pistons, Bulls, and Heat.
KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce on the same team will be beastly and hopefully revive basketball to one of the greatest franchises in the NBA.
KG is my favorite player, and I wish him the best in Boston.
Slightly off topic, but I don’t think the heat will be a strong team next year. I have my doubts about the Bulls, too.
But the deal with KG is done as long as they can “extend” his contract before he comes to Boston so they have him for more than one year… And as long as the League Office approves it.
Between the Ray Allen trade, and now this one, the C’s have traded away virtually all of their young talent.
Al Jefferson was a budding, young low post presence. KG was awesome in his prime, but he (…and Allen …and Pierce) aren’t getting any younger, and not one of those players have ever won big.
Ainge blew up the Walker-Pierce nucleus a few years ago because he thought - rightly so - that they wouldn’t ever win the title. So now, after years of total suckage, they payoff is… a team that’s a playoff contender but doesn’t have the horses to win the title. Exactly what they had five years ago!
This is an instant and significant upgrade over last season, but long term, it’s a poor decision, IMO. Ainge doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt because of all his boneheaded moves in the past.
Unless you’re getting championships in return, it’s just not worth it to trade away all of your young talent for aging stars. And the C’s won’t be getting championships in return.
I hope I’m wrong, because I’d love for the Celtics to make some noise for the first time in a loooooooonnnnnnngggg time.

I like the move because it should make things interesting. I see it making Boston a contender in the East for the next 3 seasons if everyone can stay healthy. KG is not over the hill yet. Giving up a guy who is young and might become as good as KG is not a big deal. Boston has made 2 big moves to compete for a title with Pierce now. I like it much better than watching Pierce age with a bunch of kids around him. And KG has been rescued from Minny. It’s all good to me.
It certainly would be nice to see Boston as a viable contender again. Things were much better in the NBA when the Celts were consistently one of the top teams in the league.
Considering how weak the eastern conference is, adding Garnett gives the Celtics a nice 2-3 year window to try and get something done. You’d have to put them in the upper level of the conference, along with Detroit, Cleveland and Miami.

KG is my favorite player as well, and I have said that whatever team he goes to will be the team I root for. Looks like I’m going to be a Celtics fan. If this goes through, they will be a solid team. They will still need depth at center and a veteran point guard who’s more of a distributor type. I wonder if it will happen tomorrow.

In the (L)eastern conference?
The east is almost completely devoid of talented big men. The only realy good post players in the east are Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor, Jermaine O’Neal, and Chris Bosh. Every one else is either old and unreliable (ie … Shaq & Ben Wallace) or only plays half the game (ie … Eddie Curry & Zach Randolph on O, Wallace & Sam Dalembert on D).
Garnett is going to feel like a kid in a candy store playing against an Eastern conference schedule.
The biggest problem for the celtics hasn’t been the players the last few years. It’s beencoaching. I’m sorry but I’m not a believer in Doc Rivers I think he’s a horrible coach and I don’t understand why you give a guy whose best season was Coach of the year with a 41-41 record 3 seasons to try to improve a team.
I was really hoping he was getting traded to the East. Celtics will have a solid team now that I feel, can make a run at the Eastern Finals. I don’t know about anything further. Now all we need is Kobe traded to the East. =)

Come on now.
I think Doc sucks too, but the NBA is a players league. Doc is a ‘a’ problem, but he is not ‘the’ problem.
The Celts have been devoid of talent for YEARS. Not even Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, or Greg Popovich could win with the rosters the Celtics have been sending onto the court. Byron Scott was a horrible coach in New Jersey, but Kidd/Jefferson/Martin still managed to carry him to two (L)eastern conference championships.

I agree with you. I’m basically saying that they will still have some holes to fill if they want to be able to compete with top teams in the west. They would be very good for an eastern conference team even without additional help. If they get Garnett, I’d like to see them sign a veteran point guard and center.
Brevin Knight would be a great fit for the team since he’s a pure passing point guard and an unrestricted free agent. Mutumbo and Marc Jackson are free agent big men that could help if signed.
Then again, I don’t know if the Celtics would have money to sign anybody if they get KG, so none of those options are all that likely.
With KG, Pierce, Allen, and nobody else, the Celtics would still probably be around the 3rd or 4th seed in the east (assuming they stay healthy, which might be a big assumption with Pierce and Allen).

funny you should mention the nets. They were great with those players when Byron Scott with there, soon as he left with those same players they went on a slide. They then said they needed a roster change, and they still haven’t accomplished what they did that year.
Thats not to say Byron is a great coach, but his style and practice worked for that team and allowed that team to accomplish what it did.
The NBA has alot more talent then people it credit for, and what seperates the best teams from average or below average teams are coaches. Before this year nobody would give golden state players that much credit. But look what they were able to do with Don Nelson.
Maybe Boston wouldn’t win championships with a better coach, but being the garbage of the Eastern Conference you can’t blame that on the players. They do make all kinds of roster changes every year, your telling me you can’t put together a group of people to win more then 24 games?

I agree with you on this. You can have the most talented players, but if you have no leader, you won’t be any good. Look at the Atlanta Hawks. They have missed the playoffs for several consecutive years, which means you get lottery picks in the draft.
They keep getting great players, but the coaching sucks, and are not getting maximum ability out of the players, and essentially keep losing. Coaches, in my opinion, make or break the team, regardless of talent.
I was still hoping to get KG in LA…oh well.[/quote]
That would have been awesome, but I think it would have been a major hit on the Lakers salary cap. One max player (Kobe) and one near max player (KG) means they wouldn’t have been able to pay a lot for another good player. They would essentially have to rely on rookies and younger players to support the two stars.
I am definetly excited to see KG, Pierce and Allen play together. I think the Celtics are definetly a contender now in the East. I can’t wait for this next NBA season.

I wouldn’t say Dwight Howard is a good post player. He has the talent to become one very soon, but here’s not there yet.
