What is your opinion on the effect of ‘gangsta rap’ on ethics & culture of today?

I was in the gym the other day, and this cocky bull was sounding off about how he’d kill some guy who talking trash on him, going into explain how he’d blow his brains out etcetera. The gym watcher, and other young 20 something year old white guys were all very impressed by his antics. I was very disgusted and wanted to shut his dumb ass up right there, but withheld.

These guys all walk in and put on some ‘kill you- motherfucker’ gangster rap, and lift to songs about killing & robbing people, a few times there were lyrics that make fun of white guys or talk about fucking their women.

Mind you, this is a high school gym open after hours for the public, older men are often using the gym when this shit is going on. Luckily, this room is seperate from the cardio/fitness room and no women or children come in.

Now, I like gangster rap but I mostly listen to stuff in Spanish or Italian.
I feel it’s done some good for society, in that our culture is so pussified and emasculated, that this music is one of the few non-pc hard influences a young man gets in his life.
It is a restoration of the wild west, warrior culture I respect, and an expression of it.

I can’t help but but hate some of the bullshit in it however. I grew up poor, and hate to hear about murder, robbery, drug use and misogyny, because that stuff is very real to me.

I also am of a right wing sort of persuasion, one that derives from a traditional Latin perspective, with this background, I cannot understand how any man with any pride in himself, his culture and his people/race could train himself to songs that were a degradation of that.

I don’t get how you could listen to a song talking about killing people of your race, fucking your sisters, and otherwise emasculating you.

In the Latin Rap I listen to, I often avoid songs because they are too racist, they talk about killing blacks, or degrading other races. This is the far opposite of these guys however.

Thus, it confuses me that these white dudes, listen to stuff that basically degrades their background, and at the expense of their community.

Can someone explain this bullshit to me?

This phenomenon has gone global, however, in the Latin & Eastern European countries, gangsta rap is more right wing and nationalist.

Here is some Italian rap.

You’ll notice in the video, they behead an African immigrant.

However in French & German videos, it is a glorification of black male at the expense of their ethnic group, much like that in the USA. Playing on super-slave, virility, criminal and black fighting mystique stereotypes.

Anyways what do you guys think of all this? What is the solution? Why do people listen to music that deprecates them?

People in those videos must have tiny penises. That’s the only explanation for such behavior.

Sure, I’ll give it a shot. First of all, good for you for thinking for yourself.

These people live in a cultural vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum. Without civilization (taste, education, refinement, standards of excellence, etc), that vacuum will be filled with all the vile shit that humanity is drawn to like flies on shit.

Couple this with “cultural relativism” (“Snoop Dog is the modern Bach.” LOL), and what we have here is a fetid swamp that no one but the happy few will be able to pull their asses out of.

Go, now, and listen to Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion. And leave the cultural trash to those you mentioned in your post. And don’t look back.

The rule of thumb I have noticed, is that the more someone talks, the less they walk. The guy talking about killing you is not the guy you need to worry about, the guy you need to worry about is the guy who will walk up to you and bust you in the mouth, without saying a word. THAT is the crazy mother fucker to be concerned with.

Some of Elvis’s earlier work is now over 50 years old it is still listened to today. As is Little Richard, The Beatles, Stones, Chuck Berry, etc.

I think the ethics and culture of today leads to gangsta rap, not necessarily the other way around.

It isn’t the hip wiggling that is loathsome. It is the portrayal and glorification of violence and misogyny that disgusts me. That said, I love rap music precisely because I can shake my ass to it.

However, I also realize that many rappers that come from the “ghetto” are not themselves “gangsta” – god that word is so stupid – but rather, rapping about those they witness in their community.

I mean, come on, are/were these guys really thugs? If you made it on MTV you might as well be wearing Brooks Brothers in the corporate world! Sorry Snoopy…

I don’t like rap of hip hop.I just don’t think it’s good music. i like the old play instruments thing. I also hate house /club music. DJs aren’t musicians.

But I have been to heavy metal shows. Metallica, Devildriver, and others. you want to see a pack of morons, go there. You have normal people that like the music, then you have the low minded that take it way to seriously. Like my 40 year old nitwhit buddy who thinks he’s a rock star.

He’s closer to Joe Dirt actually. So I would have to say Katz is correct. Our popular music didn’t necessarily make things better. without a strong family structure to give some point of reference,many people on the low end of the brain scale gravitate to popular culture for their morals and ethics.

I’m not for banning it and enjoy most of it, you just need to put it in it’s proper place.

First post. Just wanted to weigh in on the subject.

In junior high/high school, I used to listen to that crap, too. This was early to mid-nineties and we’d all listen to Dre, early Snoop, NWA, Too $hort, etc. We were all your standard suburban white kids. I think we liked it because it was shocking to us.

We didn’t come from a world where any of this stuff was happening and the idea of a song the repeats, “Fuck tha Police” over and over again just shocked the hell out of us. ‘Can you really say that?’ we thought.

I grew up. I don’t hunt cops, I don’t beat my wife, and I don’t spray the neighborhood with my AK. I haven’t heard a modern gangsta rap song in forever. Don’t care to. I’ll still listen to the same stuff I grew up on, but just for nostalgia’s sake and only if it comes on around me. I don’t keep it in the CD player or anything, and I sure as hell don’t need it in the gym.

OP, there is a good chance that these guys will grow up some day. Maybe not, though. I don’t like that they play it when old guys are around. I’ve always found that to be classless when people insist on their type of music when others are around.

I equate that to the guy that wears the t-shirt with an F-bomb on it where kids can see it in plain view or the guy with “Fuck Fords” on the back of his pick-up so my son can see it.

I agree with the Count on this one. Why vilify music that makes pretty girls want to swing their hips.

If one finds the music distasteful that is fine but let’s not pretend it is destroying “our culture”.

Government is doing a good job of this on its own.
