“NeilG, you’re a fucking genius.”

Thank you.

“That seems to be your point. At least, I hope it is, because I would rather you feel smart for supporting an idea any 6th grader could confirm, than to think that you believe that diet can cure absolutely everything. Even death.”

Of COURSE that’s my point. That’s why diet ADDRESSES problems while drugs just control it for the time being. That’s why I can’t believe people are disagreeing with me. The most obvious example is with diabetes. You have to clean up the diet to address the problem. Yes, drugs prevent death, but the problem will never go away if the diet remains poor. That’s why so many people are on meds for their entire life - they don’t clean up the diet and have to rely on drugs to prevent death.

"You’ve mentioned that you are going to take a year off before college. That’s fine. Just make sure you go to college and inform them of how wrong they are on everything. You could tape the debates and sell them here to fund your “education”. "

I’d like to know why you felt the need to post something from a private conversation of ours and use it to insult me.

And BTW, I don’t need to “fund” my education. There are no problems there.

NeilG hasn’t started college yet!? I would have thought he had his masters at least the way he touts himself.

What an idiot.

NeilG, I wasn’t trying to insult you, at least not in a mean-spirited way. It’s just that you argue so blindly against so many things, that I think you would be a HUGE pain in a professor’s ass.

If a professor laid something down as law that you wholeheartedly disagreed with, I think you would let him know it. Whether you were right or wrong it would be funny, don’t you think? I can just picture you bickering with some 70 year old professor during the entire class.

And it’s fine if you believe that diet can cure everything. The problem is, if that is true, that we must determine how it would cure cancer, AIDS, or anything else (pick a disease) before that knowledge is of any use to us.

NeilG hasn’t started college yet!? I would have thought he had his masters at least the way he touts himself.

Wow.

Ok, since everyone keeps saying how I “tout” myself, and I’m a “self proclaimed expert”, I’d like to see where they’re getting this.

If “tauting” is saying nutrition is important to health, and the liver, shellfish, and butter is good for you, then yes, I’m “tauting”.

I don’t see what that needs a masters, though.

Geez nice little battle going on here!

Neil G if you are only 18 then you have a lot to learn if life and the saying that sums you up is “arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, you are still handicapped”

Anyway to get back to the original question that our poor pill popping friend posted. Crohn’s obviously effects your ability to derive nutrients from food so your bases should be covered for fighting the disease first:

“objective of supportive nutrition is to correct malnutrition in terms of calorie intake or specific macro- or micronutrients. Of particular clinical relevance is deficiency in calcium, vitamin D, folate, vitamin B12 and zinc”

Luckily the same review is looking at some things that many of us do already in terms of a good diet:

“…emerging therapies, such as glutamine, growth factors and short-chain fatty acids. The future may see the evolution of enteral nutrition into an important therapeutic strategy, and the design of a ‘Crohn’s disease-specific formulation’ that is individually tailored, acceptable to patients, cost-effective, free from adverse side-effects and combines enteral nutrition with novel pre- and pro-biotics and other factors”

so the future is looking a bit brighter for getting off the corticosteroids.

For those that want to read the reference is: Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2003 Feb;17(3):307-20

See Neil, that’s how real advice works!

But to answer your question, I think that you would have to work around the problem of getting enough food into you without feeling ill so starting off at low calorie food but high nutrient density and build it up over time.

Gaining weight without supplements is easy, all i take it protein powder and that’s it, so don’t sweat the lack of them.

Good luck combating the disease and hopefully the days of pill popping will be over soon.

STU

DocT,

“Crohn’s disease is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract but most commonly occurs in the ileum (the area where the small and large intestine meet).”

It’s funny that Medline also says “The cause is unknown, but genetic factors seem to play a role.”

Look at this article on Charles Poliquin’s website:

Here’s an exerpt:

First and foremost, the use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen and other pain medications) increases gut permeability which leads to a host of symptoms also known as leaky gut syndrome.

Do you know what leaky gut is? Wait, you’re a doctor, I don’t need to tell you this.

Medline says the cause of Crohn’s is “unknown”.

Or is Charles Poliquin a wacko, too?

Many processed foods contribute to “leaky gut syndrom”.

That’s how eliminating certain foods from the diet will help address the problem of Crohn’s disease.

Not to mention the addition of nourishing foods will aide in addressing the problem.

"Diet helps a lot of things. Drugs might control the problem for NOW, but diet will actually address the problem.

If anyone thinks this is bad advice, then I’m sorry. It’s sad, really. That’s the type of people that eat donuts and chips and drink soda and then expects a magic pill to solve all their health problems. "

i gotta say that is my favourite line of all the threads i have read today (bored off my ass at work). im gonna go down to the local gay town and tell all of the super fit nutritionally strict gay guys with aids that they dont eat well enough and thats why they have the disease.

honestly, i dont have any hatred for NeilG, and i have actually seen him give GOOD advice on here. but seeing him sit there and argue with a doctor because he read some articles is ridiculous. reading articles on the internet doesn’t make you an expert. if it did, university’s would be out of business. it’s way to easy to find any topic and look on the internet for articles that completely refute this.

all bickering and insults aside… yes your diet is important for your health. can a bad diet make a disease or condition worse? once u have a disease will eating more veggies etc cure it? uh, no. i would say more like neil has it backwards, diet controls the problem by minimizing the negative effects (sensible) while drugs are used to try to address and control. drugs may not be natures way, but guess what, why else do u think this world is so fuckin over populated now? cause we all eat better?

ps… im not an expert on any of this stuff as i always hated biology (not because i sucked at it just couldnt stand it) but isnt poliquin a strength coach with grad studies in exercise physiology? that hardly makes him an expert on gastric conditions and makes his word law.

i could quote the genius einstein on his views on love and relationships and add the tag line “U THINK HES AN IDIOT TOO?” as well…

im betting neil will flame me too now, but i can understand why he gets so out of joint when people attack him, but at the same time its a good thing they do, cause alot of new posters will take peoples word on here as law.

“all bickering and insults aside… yes your diet is important for your health. can a bad diet make a disease or condition worse? once u have a disease will eating more veggies etc cure it? uh, no.”

that should say YES after "can a bad diet make a disease or condition worse? "

man i wish this board had an edit function
