Really? Women might say they like the GQ/Ano look on men, but every female I know lights up like the fourth of July when they see a decent amount of muscle.
Yea I agree with you Mak, its almost give and take here. If you have too much or too little muscle, you are fucked. If you are fat, you are ROYALLY fucked. Too much emphasis on looks here in Hollyweird.
omg…thats the whole point. there doesnt need to be a transition. those two movements dont even need to be trained together period ( i edited my post and added another paragraph)
you want functional shoulders? train you shoulders
you want functional back? train your back
you want functional legs? you guess it train them.
if you want to be good at taking a ball and lifting it to the side then lift do that. all youll do with that is improve that single movement whereas through training muscle directly you make those muscles stronger for any task that requires them. therefore, fuck functional training.
Wow. I actually agree with you about something. However, life experience would have let you in on WHEN to speak up and when not to as far as your pt training.

yea i think i did pretty good as far as just letting them talk. i only asked one question and it was because i thought it was legitimate i wasnt just trying to break their balls. unfortunately i still have to put up with it from today to thursday, 4 hrs a day.
Why not a clean and press? Or, a corkscrew with a plate?
beat me to it.
i just youtubed it cause i thought it was the exercise where you clean into the squat position then do an overhead press. i dont know Oly lifts well so the names are kinda fuzzy.
this is exactly like a shoulder press anyway. the only difference is youre using momentum to get it from a lower spot versus just taking it off the bar. youre gonna get the same function out of either way so i cant really say im opposed to it…just kinda unsure why it was mentioned as an alternative

Failing that, try hitting her.
You’re being civil in your responses to the functional training bit. You were just being somewhat rude on the your perception of his physique. I’d rather have someone his size than someone my weight and height, even if they are more cut, for a pt.
and i agree. hitting her is pretty much a cure-all.

Don’t think so. I’ve seen very fat PT.
The more popular PT’s are not fat, not here at least. Too much competition makes it so.
If they want “Functional” training then just make shit up.
Squats are good for chicken fighting when you get stuck with the really fat girl.
Deadlifts are good for picking up cars that might run over your children.
In all honesty, if your cilents are seeing results in their bodies, they aren’t going to care too much about the “functionality” of their lifts. People can say they want to lift to get better at certain tasks, which they might, but that will always take the back seat to looking better naked in these peoples’ books.

so basically your shitting on the clean and jerk?

No, a clean and jerk is done with heavy weights. He’s talking about doing lifts that don’t really make sense using weights that won’t promote muscle growth at all.

Agreed. This functional bullshit is simply an easy way to get very mediocre people into the gym so they can make mediocre progress yet feel like they are really doing something. If you make them think they are now “trained for function”…which can not be measured in any way, shape or form since you can either do something or NOT do something…you can keep making money off of them for years even though the most physical progress they may actually make is to lose a little body fat.
This is NOT bodybuilding. This is some weak assed attempt at “general fitness” and at making a quick buck.
Instead of this goofy training, I’d be more concerned about coming up with a strategy to help regular folks and their terrible eating habits. Any of that functional crap will still work on the gen-pop if you get them to follow a proper diet.
People need to train to be able to lift groceries.
Last time I went shopping, I was able to carry all my groceries to my third floor apartment in one trip. This included a gallon of milk and 4 gallons of water.
Why not a clean and press? Or, a corkscrew with a plate?
beat me to it.

I agree with you, but compared to a deadlift-shoulder press combination with the same weights. The load should be decently difficult on the clean AND the press on these.
I will also say though that I agree with whoever said to just yes them to death to get past the cert process. Trust me, it will not pay to take them to task on it.
Honestly, this groceries thing is annoying the shit out of me. Who can’t lift groceries? Who the fuck can’t lift their own fucking groceries? How is training with weights lighter than the already very light groceries going to help with the lifting of the groceries that can already be easily lifted? Who deadlifts groceries?
Surely grocery lifting is more like a sandbag rack pull from waist-height, only using your arms? So not like a DL at all? Why is there suddenly technique involved with lifting groceries? I just pick them up. Fuck.

Agreed. Being diplomatic and tactful goes a long way in getting what you want.
