I have always maintained that the only way to have an unbiased and truthful media that reports things that actually matter is to have the entire operation comprised of people possessed of unimaginable levels of political apathy. You need a news organization made up only of people who don’t give half a shit about any of it. I’m not sure there are enough people like that though. Maybe we could use robots.
I was hoping this thread would fill up quickly and looked forward to all the atrocites that Fox News has supposedly committed.
One thing should be kept clear in any discussion about ‘news reporting’.
The likes of Hannity, O’Reilly, Maddow, Limbaugh, etc-- this isn’t “news”. This is “entertainment”. Of course those personalities and shows will show a clear bias to their opinions and what sells advertising for their networks.
If we’re talking ‘hard news’ (ie. ‘reporting news’, not opining news) then I’ve yet to see a substantial argument that FOX is any worse than AP, CNN, ABCNBCCBSNPR, Reuters, NYT, etc.
‘Hard news’ bias is much more surreptitious than ‘entertainment news bias’. Hard news bias is clearly in what’s not reported. Hands down the ‘non-Fox media’ (I don’t know who coined that, but it’s accurate) bias is in choosing NOT to report facts or stories.
For the record, I’m not a fan of FOX News ‘entertainment’. I will read Fox News stories as I come across them.
Any real story of interest, I tend to read 3 sources where I can and the truth is somewhere in between. It’s so easy to pick out inconsistencies this way.
Never read the news without a calculator. The topics are proabably dated, but the sentiment still holds true-- read this book: http://www.amazon.com/Mathematician-Reads-Newspaper-Allen-Paulos/dp/038548254X

This.
It becomes tiresome to hear folks whine about the bias of Fox News when they are really for the most part whining about Hannity, O’Reilly and the like, who are openly presenting opinions and not hard news.
It shows a lack of sophistication and intellectual honesty, precisely what the usual Fox News bashers haughtily claim in spades.
(This is speaking for me only)
Hannity and O’Reilly operate under the umbrella a network called Fox News Channel. They are essentially the on-air manifestations of an opinion columnist, and consequently it would be utterly ridiculous to deride them for having and/or showing bias–this is what they’re paid to do.
The evidence I provided in this thread did not accuse anyone of bias, and especially not Hannity or O’Reilly. I accused them of lying; the two are monumentally different accusations. You, Push, are biased (we all are); but you’re not a liar.
Hannity is expected to provide opinion, but he is not expected to formulate that opinion with inaccurate information and he SURE AS HELL is not expected to publish that inaccurate information on the airwaves of Fox News Channel. If he does this, both he AND FOX NEWS are liable and the credibility of both are damaged. This is exactly what the video I linked to represented–a lie given prominence on the airwaves of a news network. That Hannity is a pundit does not excuse or change this.
The other evidence I provided was from hard news sources: the article published by Fox, not under the guise of an opinion piece, about the India trip, for example. Or the photograph manipulation.
If you’d like to defend Fox, by all means do so. But that would entail addressing these absolutely egregious and very often uncorrected errors.
pushharder wrote:
Again, Smh, I haven’t watched this video but tell me one thing…have you thrown this kind of fit over the lying that CBS, and especially NBC, have done lately? If so, link me to that thread. Please.
You should watch the video. It’s short and it’s pretty outrageous.
I responded to someone else’s request for examples of Fox News being dishonest. If the OP had been interested in NBC I’d have posted the Zimmerman transcript editing. Other than that and the Olympics editing, I’m unaware of any big scandals (then again, I don’t watch TV news ever).
By the way, though, studies have shown Fox to be far more manipulative and dishonest than its competitors and Fox News viewers to be among the worst-informed news consumers in the nation (worse than…drum roll…Jon Stewart’s audience). Fox viewers unfailingly show up in unimaginable numbers on the “Obama wasn’t born in the USA” column of new-consumption polls.
And if you want to think of Fox as an online outlet and therefore in direct competition with, for example, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post, it’s a college paper run by D students in the face of its competition.

Oh, I just mean that here there are fewer trolls and a better quality of discussion overall.
But it still gives good insight into the minds of the modern conservative.

I don’t watch Colbert any more than I do Chris Matthews. The only difference between the two is that Colbert disguises himself as a comedian and speaks politically from the left. Matthews just rants and raves like a lunatic…from the left.
By the way part of why Obama won is because of the late night stooges on the left: Letterman, Colbert, Stewart and Maher…and of course all the other left wing media.
I wonder how much blood lefties would hemorrhage if every late night comedian was a republican? You guys can’t even handle one…THAT’S ONE right leaning network. If you had to live in a world where it was reversed you would go ape shit.
While liberalism doesn’t work and has never worked we can all count on Hollywood and the corrupt MSLM to continue to win fans for the left with high quality lies masquerading as entertainment.

The reason every late night comedian isn’t a conservative is a free market one. But its not even an issue of late night comedians. People like Letterman are apolitical largely.
It could never be reversed and every comedy show was of a conservative bent for a couple of reasons. Conservatives that speak about politics are not funny. And they certainly aren’t funny in a way that sells advertising.
In your heart of hearts you must know this. Dislike Stewart’s politics and bias sure, but he’s funny.
PJ Orourke is probably the sole humorous conservative that has large scale popularity and he doesn’t have it on the same level as Colbert and Stewart.
Its hard to be funny when you are selling a tragic narrative of the unwashed masses sucking the wealthy dry when the primary market is said unwashed masses.
Mostly conservatives are the most funny when they aren’t trying to be.
Oreilly.
D Sousa is hilarious when he is talking about how his work of film is being snubbed from the oscars because of a liberal hollywood conspiracy and not because its a bad film. Now if he were doing this for comedy this would be hilarious, but he’s sincere.

Just to put a smile on your face, Zeb:
http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2011/knowless/
“The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly [out of five] – a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly; viewers of Sunday morning talk shows fare similarly well. And people watching only “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” could answer about 1.42 questions correctly.”
By the way, I’m a huge fan of PJ O’Rourke and like Dennis Miller.

You left out an important point. Most of the left wing comedians are appealing to the 18-30 year old crowd. And it is not at all cool to think, speak or act like a conservative. That age group needs to go another 10 years or, pay the government half of what they make and watch how the bloated federal government spends their money. Then it’s not so cool any more to be a left winger.
That doesn’t dawn on all of them, but most who actually succeed in life understand that liberalism has never worked anywhere in the country and to my knowledge the world.
So basically idiots like Stewart have a built in market for their drivel.
And no I don’t think Stewart is funny - I think he’s an arrogant piece of shit Who isn’t nearly as smart as he thinks he is. But then again I’m not between the ages of 18-30 so I’m not nearly as easily swayed.

It seems a bit telling though that O’rourke seems to struggle to find ten truly funny conservative videos a year.

You know thing is you call people like Stewart idiots when you are so wrapped up in your world view sometimes you can’t see reality. Like the polling thread. Not only were you wrong you were wrong and frequent in the personal attacks. This would cause one to perhaps engage in some personal reflection that their own worldview certainly isn’t everyone’s and as well certainly is no longer the dominant paradigm.
Its the narrative I am older than that age group and I don’t see them as the easily swayed myopic masses. I see them as hopeful less prejudiced and less full of bitterness.
You do seem pretty bitter. Life rarely works out exactly how you want but its your choice to be resentful of the young.

I don’t have any joint problems thanks for thinking of me though. You’re so nice like that. One thing that might help you however is a cold dose of reality. It won’t come out of your shower tomorrow morning either. But it will come over the next four years and…you won’t like it!

So it’s personal attack time is it? You started up sooner than usual. I call Stewart names and then you attack me personally—Those wondering how these things begin only need look at your response to my previous comments.
Got it, my turn now…
There have been millions of political predictions made over the past decade or two. Half the people are wrong and half of them are right – Ho hum. Save your hate mail for someone you might be able to intimidate with your inexperienced bullshit. My “world view” (Chuckle) is pretty spot on. So much so that I’ve been able to make a good living for myself. Some day you might know what that’s like. And if you get there you won’t like the government taking half of it.
As to your comments on my age, if you don’t think that you are going to get any smarter over the next 20 years I feel sorry for you. As I tell my daughter who also thinks she knows everything, "if we have roughly the same IQ and I have lived 20+ years longer than you how can be both be on the same level? She’s smart enough to nod her head and walk away, you won’t be. It’s far too cool to throw stones at those of us who have lived, learned and see where the country is headed under Obama. Free stuff for everyone has never worked out they have a name for it, s o c i a l i s m. Granted we’re not there yet, but we’re one step closer.
And it apparently bothers you that I’m informed enough to know who voted for Obama. And the majority of those people want something from the government.
18-30 year olds who are basically star gazing liberals. And assume that the government can crap out handouts until hell freezes over with absolutely no negative consequences. They saw Obama on Jon Stewart and well…he soooo cool. Did I just describe someone that you know? Ha…
Single women with children who want Obama to pay for their baby. Or should I say the taxpayers.
Unions who have been treated really, really well by Obama and company. See the GM deal if you are ignorant of the facts. Of course there are more examples, but begin there.
Minorities who would vote for a democrat regardless of how poor a job he did in his first term. Now let’s see why would an entire minority group vote for a democrat every four years?
LBJ started it and he’s done more harm to minorities than the Klu Klux Klan. Look it up junior.
And those who voted against Obama, or should I say “for Romney”? Naw…against Obama, as I would have voted for a pig in a suit over Obama. Anyway those people wanted one thing from their government that is, “leave us alone.”
On the one hand we have most of Obama’s supporters with their hands out. On the other hand we have the anti Obama crowd with their hands up pushing government away. Can you figure it out from here or do you want me to draw you a nice little colored map?
Back on topic, as I said Stewart and company pander to chowder heads like you. When you grow up groo and actually make some money one day you won’t think he’s quite as funny. Maturity does have it’s advantages and one of them is to be able to see through the left wing crap that is thrown at us by a very biased corrupt media. You like it now because you are young and stupid. (Ouch that was nasty huh? Eh the truth is sometimes).
You’re a genius right now Skippy but in 10 years or so you’ll look back. And when you do you won’t think you were so very special. In fact you might be laughing at yourself then just as hard as I am laughing at you now.
Now it’s your turn and make sure to crank up the ad hominems. After all I did insult Jon Stewart in my previous post and you are not going to stand for that.
Go get em tiger!

Nope, but I heard he’s pretty good at what he does and makes a lot of money doing it. Sort of like Jon Stewart at least up to that point.
