any good freestyle is written.

Yeah; one of the greatest freestyles of all time - Big L on the 7-minute freestyle - is quite obviously pre-written. Every line is a quotable though.

how’s the rapping been going for you G87? I remember you made that thread a while back…

I’ve been working on freestylin a little more since then, gotten noticably better, still miles away from good though. Haven’t gotten down to writing anything myself, but that’ll come eventually i suppose.

Hey, man. It’s been going pretty well, surprisingly! I obviously have a thousand miles to go, but for a beginner, I think I’m OK.

It’s impressive that you started off with freestyling and are still just doing that. I don’t think I’d be able to do that. Do you try to think of words that rhyme ahead of time?

PS Does anyone think that Mos Def is over-rated?
Yes and no, it’s hard to explain. When I was worse at freestylin, I remember very actively trying to think of words that rhyme ahead of time…and it wouldn’t work out as well. Now that I’m better, it seems like my mind’s not wandering off as much, the words either pop up just before I need them or they’ll just so happen to roll of my tongue. I freestyle much more fluidly (not necessarily better in my opinion) when I’m high and there’s almost no thinking going on then haha.

Do you have any writtens yet? or just a couple of bars?

his blackstar album and black on both sides were awesome but then he went andre 3000 on everyone…its like kids today can’t remember when andre rapped and destroyed every verse

I’ll be honest: I should probably get better acquainted with Mos’s work. However, as far as I can see, he tries to ride the political-conscious shit, which he can’t do because he’s just not clever enough.

As for Andre 3000… He still rapped as recently as 07 at least, and KILLED it:

I view Andre as one of the musical geniuses of the rap game. He’s a real musician, not just a rapper, but as a rapper, he changed the game, and to think that Outkast came out of the south, which is def not known for its lyricism, is incredible. Think about it: Big Boi is a great MC, but he can’t keep up with Andre unless Andre slows it down and LETS him keep up.

Yeah, Andre 3K is amazing. I don’t think hip hop music is limited to rapping anyway, so I wouldn’t really discredit someone for trying something other than rapping. Especially someone like Andre 3000 who has already proven himself to be one of the best ever (not accusing you of that jtg987).

As for Mos Def, I like the guy but I can see where the political nature of the music turns people off.
I should of stated I was an 3 stacks fans hell ATLiens and their first album(not going to bother typing the name) are two of my favourite albums. The rap game needs Andre too rap, theres no balance anymore there used to be, his art of story telling pt4 verse was probably one of the top verses that year but we need andre too rap again.

Mos’ blackstar and black on bothside albums arent political

Eminem freestyle , pretty good.

Asher Roth , same show, i think its pretty good.

LarryDavid, always enjoy your input on hip-hop.

It’s a shame that Eminem’s was pre-written, I would really expect him to be an awesome freestyler, because he’s so good. I don’t know if this was said by Eminem himself or not, but it’s funny how strongly Redman influenced him. Speaking of Redman, what an under-rated dude… I guess some dudes were just made to be excellent MC’s but are limited by a lack of overall musicality, like Red.

I also wonder how much smoking weed negatively affects your raps. Andre doesn’t smoke OR drink, so I can’t help but think that it DOES mess with your head.

WOW @ the BIG freestyle. As a kid, I loved 2pac and it baffled me why a lot of people even put Biggie on the same level. In retrospect though, Notorious was an incredibly gifted straight MC.

That One Guy: I probably have about 150-200 lines, of which maybe 10-20% good enough that I won’t eventually delete. I should really try to freestyle, but it’s hard to do it. When I sit to write, I’m busting out alliterations, multis, and puns. When I try to freestyle, I’m rhyming “cat” with “hat” :). I’m would really like to keep practicing and put something online within the year; are you planning to do anything like that, or just keep it to yourself?

I should have clarified. I meant social/political views and messages. The songs don’t have to be entirely about a political or social view for some unimpressive/just weird ones to be expressed. Songs like “RocknRoll”, and “New World Water” fit the bill. They’re not that great on their own IMo, but as part of the album they work well.

if you like Hip-hop, try some MF DOOM, Born This Way, a hip-hop album with a superhero theme, outstanding …

Shee man, Murs is tight, 9th WonderFUL production, sounds like Symbolyc One

Jin is a beastly freestyler, and he’s an actual FREESTYLER from most of the vids I’ve seen. Still, he reminds me of Bobby Creekwater (posted previously by 781) in that I don’t think he’ll ever blow. It is so rare for a rapper to blow just off rapping… You gotta have production (Lupe, Kanye, 50, hell, just about any really famous rappers), or catchy elements (Fort Minor, Kanye, many others but can’t think right now) or do collaborations to blow. Why do you think Redman is so incredibly under-rated, despite being one of the strongest writers in the game bar none?

This is not to detract from the man’s talent, but it’s a shame that without blowing he’ll never get a chance to truly shine musically, IMO.

That Murs song was sick, production, too… I haven’t checked for the guy before, but now I most definitely will. Thanks, 781. For once, our tastes match :).

Bits of “How to Lose Your Mind” by Reef:

Ignore the retarded video.

CCJDilla, cool that you noticed the production on the Murs. I guess you’re a producer, since you’re a Dilla fan? :).

various MGMT collaborations

Jim Jones remix to Electric Feel

not that dope just a typical Jim Jones verse then the regular song

2/5

Mistah Fab - COmmunication - remix to of Moons Birds and Monsters

much better, beat is actually altered, lyrics are much better than Jimmie’s much better song all around IMO.

4/5

This reminds me, Rhymefest’s Man in the Mirror is a hilariously, creative album. I’m not a fan of skits, but this album is worth it for the skits alone. Plus Rhymefest can hold his own. Great album.

Hmmm…Well I think I’m going to start writing and when I write some lines that I think are good enough I’ll put em together into like a first song and probably rap over an instrumental. But I’m very self-conscious about my rapping so I’ll have to get over that haha

You know, I never really gave Redman a real chance. I’ve heard some of his stuff before, but don’t really remember whether it was any good, but upon your recommendation I’m downloading his first album with Method Man and “Whut? Thee Album”. If there are any tracks/albums you think I should listen to in particular don’t hesitate to let me know :D.
