Football Returns !

America’s Team: The Dallas Cowboys. That’s all there is to it. Before I move on to college ball, let me try to put the kibosh on some of these fad teams being picked by everyone:

Baltimore - one more nasty hit, and McNair is done for the season, which is a possibility because that offense is still suspect (o-line not that great, not many offensive weapons); Washington - Brunell won’t have another good season (just look at his history), and they still don’t have a proven receiver other than Moss (Lloyd played in possibly the worst division last year: the NFC West; whatever he did was not a big deal), and Portis is injured; Chicago - the Bears have no offense; and Kansas City (two Pro Bowl offensive linemen left; possible flop this year: Larry Johnson, but that’s just me going out on a limb).

And college? Whatever… I guess that either West Virginia or Louisville will remain undefeated at the end of the season, so one of them will be in the BCS championship against… what the hell, Notre Dame. Every team in the SEC (IMO, the best conference in all of college football), will, once again, knock eachother out of contention. The only good ACC teams (FSU, UM, and VT), will do the same, especially since Miami, probably the best of the three, will lose their first game against FSU after having suspended four of their starters for the game.

Ohio State lost too many people (nine defensive starters are gone), USC the same (Leinart, Bush, White, etc.), and Texas will probably be the highest ranking of the three (sick defense), but they won’t go to the Championship again. What sucks about college football is the rankings given to them, though: those three teams are in bad conferences, yet they’ll still be ranked in the top five, while SEC and ACC teams will round out the top ten and continue into the double digits. It sucks. I don’t know. Sorry for the long reply. Football season is my favorite time of year.

Something you should learn on this site is not to pretend to know what you’re talking about when you really don’t.

Lifelong Cowboys fan here. The Star will rise again, just not this year. I predict they will make it to the second round of the playoffs. Bledsoe is great, went to college with him, but he is not the Moses Staubach and Aikman were. We’ve got a solid D, and top level WR, K, TE, RB (2 of them actually). Bledsoe is great, but Parcells and Jones need to commit to getting a top QB in the next draft. Unfortunately, we don’t have another Hershel Walker to trade. If the Cowboys stay together next year and improve the QB situation I’ll predict a 6th Superbowl Ring for them.

Here’s a thought, T.O. has a monster year or two with the Cowboys, improves his reputation and gets back into good graces with the league. Then we trade him to some lowly team desperate for a star player, a la Hershel Walker, for draft picks.

This is the best time of year. My picks for College ball National Champs is The Ohio State University, followed by Notre Dame. I think Florida State and USC have a good chance as well. My favorite college team is BC but I think they’ll trip up against Miami or Virginia Tech.

Pro - I have to be a homer and go with the Pats. I always liked the Giants (grew up in Western, MA). Superbowl prediction will be tough because Miami is going to be real good this year but I think it’ll be New England versus Carolina again. The NFC east guys are going to beat the crap out of one another like they did in the 80’s and Carolina will be battle tested because they have a real tough division.

as opposed to you rooting for Pitt of all teams? a Big East team (a conference which really isn’t worth shit, which is why Miami left the moment it had an opportunity to do so), not good enough to get past Virginia, West Virginia, or Lousiville. But I can see why you would think that they would shoot up the polls, what with playing such Big East powerhouses as Rutgers, UConn, Syracuse, and, who can forget, The Citadel, quite possibly the toughest non-conference opponent in college ball.

Please dude.

Before going ahead and flaming someone for offering an opinion – which is what this topic is about: each person’s personal opinion on who’s going to do well this season – do your homework.

Malo: D’OH ! How did I forget Ray Lewis and the Ravens won back in 2000 ?! I chalk it up to being up at two A.M when I shoulda been sleeping lol. I just made myself look like an even bigger moron than usual.

Totally agree on the whole Bledsoe issue and outlook on this season. One thing I doubt they’ll do, though, seeing as how (I hope) they won’t be among the top fifteen or twenty teams during the next draft is take a quarterback. They’ll probably just try to keep grooming Tony Romo or pick up some back-up from another team poised to do well (See: Jake Delhomme).

And not a bad thought on the whole T.O. issue for the future, but I doubt it’ll happen, seeing as how, two years from now, he’ll be, what, 35? Certainly old by football standards. Would be great, though.

College and NFL football is making its yearly return now and I am stoked. My teams this year will be the New York Giants as well as Baltimore Ravens for the bigs and Penn State and Michigan for cleege 'ball.

What about the rest of you folks ? Who do you like to get to the Superbowl and the college bowl games ?[/quote]

You’re a fan of the Ravens and Wolverines? Well, I’m a Buckeye who grew up in Cleveland, so it looks like we will be pulling for opposite sides a few times this season…

That’s the beauty of the T.O. thing. Older guy, big name, end of career…trade is ass to a desperate team (N.O., Texas, Oakland…) before he’s worthless.

WTF is going on with that QB from Michigan that Dallas signed a few years ago who was supposed to be the next great thing? If he’s not ready now, he never will be. Excess baggage.

Thank God! It’ll take a lot of football though to erase some of that World Cup stuff from my memory.

I live in the Buffalo area so I am a lifelong Bills fan. I went to Syracuse for undergrad - so I am a SU fan.
The upshot is - football season is going to suck for me.

Da’ Bears in the NFL and the Badgers in college ball.

You’re right on the T.O. thing. Kind of like Rice at the end of his career.

You mean Drew Henson. Henson spent the offseason playing in NFL Europe. He showed signs of life, and the Cowboys organization was pleased with him. However, he’s back to his old ways at camp. He’s third on the depth chart behind Bledsoe and Romo (Romo being the next next big thing; he should get a lot of reps against New Orleans as he did against Seattle). Henson’s been relegated to playing with the second and thirtd team offenses at practice, though his reps have diminished a bit there to give way for the fourth string guy (Baker, I think). I don’t see Henson with the team past this season.

WOrta1128, I reread your post and I thought that you were saying the big name teams you talked about SHOULD be ranked as high as they are. My apologies. I dislike fans that spew the corporate line from SI and ESPN like it’s gospel about as much as those skinny trolls that have been posting a lot on this site lately. You don’t seem to be one of them.

I do have to ask though, what exactly does being a Pitt fan have to do with my knowledge of CFB? And why are you blasting Pitt’s schedule when I said nothing on the subject to even warrant flaming. BTW, the Citadel was a last-minute addition because of a gaping hole in Pitt’s schedule. Most D1-A matchups are arranged years in advance. The best most teams can do with last-minute schedule changes are D1-AA. That’s usually what happens when 3 teams leave your conference in 2 years.

i had to respond somehow man. i saw in an earlier post that you were rooting for pitt, so i just went there. same as you, i didn’t think that you knew what you were talking about since you seemed to just be one of those people on this site who flames for the sake of it, but never backs it up. just a mistake on my part. no hard feelings, i hope.

Where in Wisconsin do you live if you’re pulling for the Bears?

I’m actually excited for the Badgers, though (well I’m actually excited every year). I want to see how they are post-Alvarez.

AS long as Michigan wins 3 games i’m happy

ND
Penn State
Ohio State.

Lose any one of the 3 and Lloyd Carr must GO!

And he’s overrated as hell, and a dickhead.

GO BUCKEYES!!!

All I have to say is… fuck Notre Dame. The only college team that I hate almost as much is Ohio State.

Anyway, people are sleeping on Penn State and they’re gonna be nice this year. I’m not saying they’re better than Ohio State (they’re not), but Derrick Johnson is a superstar in the makings (Ted Ginn without the hype) and Tony Hunt is going to step up into one of the top backs in the country this year I think. Of course, everybody already knows about Posluszny and crew on the defense. They are going to shock Notre Dame on week 2 (at least… I hope so!).
