Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 2)

If you fail your ethics class, does that mean you have poor ethics?

Counter argument: if you fail your ethics class because you stand up for what you believe in, doesn’t that mean you have outstanding ethics?

I pulled this one on my ethics professor.

It was the first Friday of the class.

HALF the class showed up.

The professor said “Half of my class doesn’t show up on Fridays…I should teach stuff directly on the test on those days, to reward those that show up and punish those that don’t”

Me, being a smartass, goes “Is that ethical?”

She replies "Is it ethical to skip class in the first place?

I say “Do two wrongs make a right?”

I got an A in that class.

She liked me.

Freshman seminar was like this for me.

I consider it an achievement that I was the most active in class (it was discussion based) ANd the prof thought I “really enjoyed it” even though I disagreed with almost everything they said and spent most of class time doing my calc hw

If you fail an unethical ethics class it means you have good ethics. :+1:

In undoubtedly the pettiest action of my life, I took a political interactions course with an absolute genius professor. Fulbright scholar, Washington post editor, guy was intense. Had some really good discussions, submit my first paper, get a B-. Lowest grade I had ever received on a paper, he just destroyed my opinions. Which weren’t really opinions, I took a very evidenced based approach to the topic, but he thought that numbers and statistics were “missing the point of the emotional experience of politics”

Cool, got it, we will never see eye to eye on this. So, I wrote absolutely heart wrenching sob story emotional appeals for the rest of the semester, pulled a 97% in the class.

Now for the petty. With each paper, I wrote a second paper, which was just me absolutely destroying all the points I had written for the first paper, and explaining why the emotional aspect was insufficient to capture the entirety of the picture. After the final when all grades were in, we had a last day of classes to essentially just sum up the course. I handed my professor this fat stack, after I got my A, and then told him that here is a better look at what I should have written for the past semester.

Somewhat Ironically, he thoroughly enjoyed the rebutted, and actually became a strong mentor of mine throughout school. Life’s weird.

This kind of thing is why I’m in Econ

Yesterday in research club, we had a great time discussing the value of the marriage contract and maximizing the child production function to address the effects of demographic transition

I can see both sides, even if I tend to lean analytical. I will say, after gaining a bit more experience in both sides of the field, I still feel that the analytical is on the whole more accurate, but the surprises in human behavior are almost always due to the pathos side of things

Edit; I should probably point out that my focus was on international relations and military strategy, so I can’t say with anything close to certainty that this applies outside my own field

And youre not chiming in on the Russian Military Buildup Outside Ukraine thread?? I know it’s PWI but there’s minimal poo-throwing in that thread; your input would likely be a huge value added.

honestly, I think that’s the least trainwreck of a PWI thread we’ve ever had

Honestly, I’ve been reading that thread pretty voraciously, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the thoughtfulness of some posters, but as a rule I don’t post in PWI. One, I think it’s a bit inappropriate for active duty to be throwing around opinions on some of these matters, and secondly I find that discussing politics on the internet is generally just an exercise in virtue signaling and knowledge boasting, regardless of which stance one takes on a political issue.

Also, to be frank, I’m not entirely certain how useful my commentary would be. I can talk for hours on military strategy or Russian history, but I have not been read into the situation in Ukraine. I don’t know the real numbers for any of this, my knowledge of the Intel situation is no better than anyone else with a smartphone. So while I may have a background that helps me analyze any information I see, I really can’t pretend that I am getting a clear enough nor in depth enough look into the situation to chime in any unique opinion. Maybe some thoughts on specific tactics or Russian grand strategy, but as far as what’s happening on the ground, im still just getting news from the same as everywhere else.

(That being said, if you do want to read some good takes, I find that the rand corporation, brookings institute, and small wars journal are some awesome resources for all things regarding strategic implications.)

That seems like an interesting class. I’m curious, what have you learned in there. If it’s anything that can be linked to history then that is golden knowledge to me.

I confess I just learned apparently caffeine effects everyone different. Some people with adhd it just makes them tired… my life makes so much sense now. All my best work naps are shortly after consuming 300mg of caffeine. Also probably why I prefer non stim pre workouts…

Mind is officially blown.

So …
Confession.

I’m a geek. And I like things that other just don’t get. One if those are numbers that just “work”. The latest is the number 60.

Let me explain:

My latest round of conditioning is 60 reps of 4 different exercises asap using a sand bag.
Doing all 60 reps of 1 exercise unbroken before doing the next is the goal. But is currently not achievable. So I’m working up from multiple sets. Get ready for the magic.
I started with;
10x6 before moving (or I will be moving to)
6x10, 5x12, 4x15, 3x20, 2x30. After 30 I can start doing 2/3 at a time.
Any way. The number 60 just “works”.
You can’t do that shit with 50 or 70. And 40 reps is to few. 80 too many.

60 just works. And this makes me very happy. Not even a little bit happy. I feel like I just solved world hunger.

I just need to figure out an ascending / descend order that works.
For 50 reps you can do
20:15:10:5.
Maybe
5:10:15:15:10:5?
