Go watch Sherlock. It will make you WANT to think. This doesn’t happen often when I watch TV stuff. Not even when watching House. Never gave a shit about the medical stuff. I watched it mainly for the characters and writing and then the quality of filmmaking in season 4. It all went downhill after that until it became completely unwatchable by season 7 anyway. I only watched season 6 because of Olivia Wilde.
The only other series that I put nearly on par with Sherlock is Boston Legal. That was fucking David E, Kelley on roids until they fucked it all up in season 4. In The Practice, the legal stuff started becoming so absurd I couldn’t tolerate it after season 2 even though they did have some pretty solid some roots in reality because it had nothing else going for it. The characters were boring as fuck. At least Ally McBeal was entertaining but I never really got into it. In Boston Legal, it became even more absurd but I didn’t fucking care. The overall writing was just too good to even nitpick. The “thinking” part would be about lots of social and ideological issues that are thrown in but even they can easily be ignored because of the characters.
BTW when I want to watch something that makes me shut my mind off completely, I just watch those breakdowns of movies with some serious clickbait titles and narrated by a FUCKING AI VOICE program on YouTube. That way I don’t even have to watch movies that are probably crap despite the summaries being interesting since I’ve never even heard of 90% of them even though they’re all US productions. There’s one dude with multiple channels and you can tell that he’s not even an English speaker and put whatever he wrote through a translator since every time the words “sex” or “gender” are supposed to be used, the AI says “hormone(s)” LMAO. I have no idea what language that’s translated from. Perhaps @loppar may know.
I honestly don’t know how John Woo managed to pull it off. Without him and the 2 leads, it could easily have been one of the shittiest movies ever made given the absurdity of the plot alone. His most recent movie produced by China was almost equally ludicrous and it had a relatively higher budget that was almost 1.5-2x that of Face Off when taking the local cost of labor and other production stuff into account while accounting for inflation (yeah I confess I think about shit like these WHILE watching movies lol) and it sucked donkey balls.
I smoked for years and never had a cough. Thinking Constant sinus infection should do the trick though! I will say, they were beautiful!! Extremely blocky and very symmetrical. I cannot wait one day to unveil them without coughing
Every call week at work I’ll smoke 1 or 2. They all laugh that it’s not a real call week until I smoke one. I also usually don’t follow my diet then either, it makes for good laughs as the running joke is I completely come unhinged on call weeks.
Found these tonight when I was visiting the bad part of town. The ones on the ravk above those had glitter on them! Didn’t try to take any home though.
I generally don’t think about the plot holes in well made shows with complex storylines because I expect them to be there. There are loads of plot holes in House too but I don’t care. I’m sure medical professionals would see even more.
Sherlock is so well made in every aspect which is also why I don’t care, just like I didn’t care about the ridiculous legal stuff in Boston Legal while I couldn’t watch The Practice because it took precedence over everything else after season 2 or 3. Who the fuck gives a shit about a show that was just an excuse for David E Kelley to get up on his soapbox every week using Lara Flynn Boyle or that guy from AHS anyway lol?
The last or second last season of Sherlock was filmed like House on amphetamines. Even if the writer is trying to be too clever, how is the script executed? In this case, I was mindblown just by level of filmmaking alone. It took the second last episode of season 1 and last 2 episodes of season 4 of House to a completely different level.
It was that fucking show about Dracula or something that actually made me MAD at the writer for fucking wasting my time hoping it’d gradually get better lol. It got WORSE with each episode.
Besides, weren’t YOU the one who recommended Sherlock to me?
EDIT:
I’ve never read the novels.
But how can anyone not like a show with scenes like this:
For those who haven’t watched it, she also owns and drives A FUCKING ASTON MARTIN LMAO.
I’m not sure if you’re looking for advice or not but when I was a teenager I used to work at a pulmonary clinic as a janitor. That massively helped set me on the right track.
Well and nowadays I work in a big hospital* and that is still reinforcing.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I’ve ordered a drug that a couple of friends used to quit. I’m talking about fucking 2+ packs a day chain smokers in China (@anna_5588 should know what it’s like there lol). So far there’s been a 100% success rate amongst them.
You know I was speaking in jest. Although there is a lot of truth to it tbh.
Another reason that drove me away (besides more obvious ones) is that I survived cancer. My father said he would be beyond disappointed in me if I started smoking, since I of all people should know why not to.
Best of luck man! Rooting for you to beat smoking.
Thanks again! I didn’t really see the jest there actually but I appreciate the fact that you took the time to write something to encourage me. My grandfather literally died from something like an asthma attack but I have no idea what the medical term is. He was already warded with late stage stomach cancer which I don’t know whether had metastasized to his lungs. He was a lifelong smoker despite his asthma and always gave the rationale that he couldn’t quit because he volunteered to help out while he was just a boy scout at makeshift medical centers when the Japanese invaded S.E Asia and saw stuff like a guy with his balls blown off, followed by several years of occupation.
I picked up smoking when I was around 13 or 14. I started smoking and drinking very heavily when I had to entertain clients from and in China. For drinking, it was easy as fuck because I do not respond to alcohol at all when it comes to any euphoric effects for some reason. But I purposefully made myself drink a quarter bottle of chivas every single night when I was not entertaining clients for years just to keep my alcohol tolerance up and I ended up actually hating alcohol. I just stopped when I didn’t have to do this stuff personally anymore. Didn’t even have any withdrawals. But smoking has always been hard to quit for me.
EDIT: I figure the same principle will apply here since the people I mentioned who took the aforementioned drug to quit smoking told me it caused them to not like smoking, which is why I’m not going the “quit cold turkey” nor any other routes atm since there’re still times when I need to be a “social smoker” with some clients but I don’t think there’s any '“tolerance level” needed to be maintained when it comes to smoking.
Congrats on your surviving cancer. That’s some tough shit, man.
Yeah man I imagine quitting smoking is incredibly hard! No judgement there. If I personally had to do it (and would be willing to) I’m pretty sure I would seek help from a psychotherapist. Every male member of my family used to smoke, most of them heavily, and apart from one uncle they all stopped. It’s possible to beat but I don’t envy anyone in that position.
Thanks. It is indeed tough shit, although I’m not sure if I can take that much credit personally.
