I actually got to visit the DMZ when I trained with the ROK Marines. Thereās a tiny building thatās literally on the border of North and South Korea where meetings are held, and we got to walk inside there. When youāre in the NK half of the building, youāre technically in North Korea, so, I can say Iāve been there! That being said, thereās no reason to actually step foot inside NK - the first time you see Propaganda City, or Peace Village, you realize what the deal is. The doors are painted on the walls of a completely fake, uninhabited city.
The village features a number of brightly-painted multi-story buildings and low-rise apartments with almost all structures there apparently wired for and provided with electricity. The small town was oriented and positioned such that the bright-blue roofs and white side-walls of the various residential buildings built next to the massive pole flying the North Korean flag would be particularly-distinguishing features when viewed from the southern side across the border (the DMZ) between the two Koreas. Scrutiny with modern telescopic lenses and clearer and sharper images produced, however, has led to the conclusion amongst many that the villageās buildings are simply empty shells of concrete and steel which lack not only window-glass but even interior rooms and floors as well,[13] with lights in the buildings and structures turned on and off and empty sidewalks in the small town being swept by caretakers as part of possible efforts by the North Korean authorities to preserve the illusion of activity and life in the village.[14]
Anyhoo, with how methodically fucked up that government has been since Kim Il Sung, whether or not that chunky piece of garbage is alive has 0 bearing on how NK will operate in days to come. Theyāll continue to starve, imprison, and torture their own populace all the same.
