And then we’d be all like “yeah, but can you bench your own BW?” and the circle continues.
I think that would be a hilarious “dare” - I’d love to try it, if there was some way to mitigate all the negative consequences!
It worked for Bruce Randall
Seated pressing is cool, you can build shoulder size and, I guess “general” shoulder strength that way. Look at big 90s bodybuilders like Levrone pressing 4 plates in the Smith machine. Those guys were big and strong.
Seated pressing is also useful and effective to build your standing overhead press because you can’t cheat. Big Z is supposed to love seated Smith machine press.
But if you want to be really good at standing presses with a barbell, or push presses or jerks you really need to do Some work standing up.
And if you want to be really good at lifting Strongman specific stuff like logs or kegs you’ll want to at least get your hands on the equipment a few times.
Let’s say you’re trying to get a “Big” standing barbell press, on no specific timeline. A guy who’s only done seated presses will be ahead of the guy who’s never done any overhead pressing. But they guy who’s done some standing presses with the barbell will be ahead of him.
Now imagine you’ve got a Strongman contest with max log coming up in 6 weeks. If you’ve Never overhead pressed, You’re Fuct! If you’re pretty good at standing BB press you might have a chance. If you’ve got a strong seated press, and you’re comfortable and strong pressing on your feet, and you’ve practiced some with the log you’re in great shape.
WTF?! I’m still trying to squat 225 ![]()

relax, you squatting 225 is like me squatting 425
For some reason, I automatically assumed there was a “not with steroids” caveat to those conversations. Given what I’ve seen with regards to shitty diets and big numbers in the pharma forum, and a thread recently where two people who were skinnyfat went to six packs and v tapers in 12 weeks, I would think the answer to that would be obvious. I know steroids don’t do all the work, but some people reallllllly downplay how much of a difference they make. If that thread does include the possibility of taking steroids, that becomes the most obvious yes ever.
I generally don’t look there unless there are train wrecks but I took a glance the other day and noticed a connection with PWI ![]()
Yeah, even in the absence of steroids, I feel like people ignore the effect bodyweight gain has. When you make 350lbs LESS than bodyweight, it’s far more viable.
Yeah, I agree, I think I had the questions framed differently in my mind with that one. Like, is it possible without ruining your life or putting your health in jeopardy? Just the idea of “get to 400 lbs bodyweight” automatically excludes everyone “average”.
It becomes similar to a push up.
For me I saw it as “is it something any human body is capable of”.
In turn, it’s a good discussion on priorities. How important is a 350lb bench? For some dudes, a 900lb deadlift is worth it. For some, even less. And for some, no weight on the bar is worth the sacrifice.
That’s pretty much how I see it - preferences
Likewise.
Without PEDs I think 350lb is hard but its there for most guys.
With PEDs the conversation is: With access to the best training, equipment and coaching and with access to the right drugs can you achieve less than 1/3 of the current world record. The answer should be yes.
I confess that in a way, even though I’m 99% sure he’s a liar, I kinda miss Nutty. His profile pic made me smile - big Carlton fan.
I feel like I’ve screwed up my tastebuds. I was eating a quest bar, saw some berries and grabbed some. Not only were the berries significantly sweeter, they made the quest bar kind of tasteless
Lol what do you think he was he lying about?
Did you ever read his log?
I think during last winter was when the “drama” happened.
Now and again but not really to enough depth to notice any untruths. What’s the story?
