Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

I assumed it’d be right along the lines of “Real World Tactical” blended with strongman. Which is exactly how I got hoodwinked. I had trusted the rep of Bryant to not just slap the word “tactical” onto basic strongman training to get a buck.

I was wrong.

That’s crap on two levels:

Firstly - a waste of your time and money
Secondly - a good reputation tarnished.

As I want to attempt strong man next summer (It was going to be this summer but every thing is cancelled) - what books do you recommend. If it make a difference I want to compete at under 105kg.

After having read a few books on strongman training, I really wouldn’t recommend reading a book on it. The issue with strongman is that there IS no “strongman”. It’s not like powerlifting or weightlifting where there’s a predetermined amount of lifts and way you’ll compete at a competition. There’s no rulebook, so there’s nothing to prepare for. And unless you have a competition coming up, there’s nothing to train for. How I train for one competition is completely different from how I train for another because the events are all different.

In addition, when you try to just pre-build a strongman training template, it can’t account for the strengths and weaknesses of the unique athlete. The coach that writes the programs will just kinda shotgun out a bunch of good ideas, but if they’re not the good ideas YOU need, they won’t do you any good. I’ve pretty much never benefited from speed work, and I don’t include it in my programming, but it’s shoe horned into so many other programs.

Long rambling reply short: you gotta find a competition first and then decide what you need to do to train for it. Otherwise, 5/3/1, Westside Barbell for Skinny Bastards, Deep Water, etc, all solid baseline programs.

This explains the visiting English Rabbi’s reluctance to allow participation in the Nathan’s Wiener Noshing Contest this past July 4.

We were all saying, “but Nathan’s is kosher sausage, Rabbi!”

Didn’t budge.

I can understand that. I guess the events for strong man are very wide ranging. All you can do is get strong in the basics and then get specific once you know the events.

I can see a problem with this in the UK.

Yup. There is literally no set definition of a strongman event. I could put on a full powerlifting meet and call it strongman. So if you dedicate yourself to farmers walks and sign up for static monsters, you are hosed.

Forgot to say but Brian Alsrhue’s programs would be great baselines as well.

Yeah - I’m just gonna work hard on a few of the basics with loads of carry over. So just getting stronger with 531 in the following lifts:
Front squat, press, dead lift, pull ups.

And then with I can I’ll do the following event training:
Farmers walk, log, front loaded carrier, stones. And sled push / pull for cardio.

If I can hit my strength goals for each of these - I doubt there will be too many events I struggle with in novice / under 105 local competitions.

It’s very easy to overdo it when training for Strongman, you have to address your personal weaknesses in training and not try to do “Everything”. It’s impossible. Like @T3hPwnisher noted, it is extremely dependent on the individual contest. In between you have to figure out what you suck at and try to be more rounded as a competitor. I would note that strenuous interval cardio had a direct positive impact on my Medley abilities - and they were stupid heavy Medleys of the type most people don’t finish and some people have trouble getting past the second leg and never really get to the third.

I miss medleys. They are rare these days. Great tests of grit.

Yeah I like the events where strength of mind is every bit as important as strength of body.
You cant “choose” to add 20kg to your max dead lift. If 450kg is your max then youre stuck if you need 475kg to win.
But some event take guts and determination.
The tire flip anchor drag from WSM a few years back comes to mind. I watch that and I feel sick.

I confess, I believe If you want to prep for Strongman you should keep power cleans and standing overhead press in the rotation.

If you subscribe to Martins Licis’ Twitch channel, and log on when he’s streaming live, he will answer any training questions you have.

What now?

But honestly - at the moment I’m okay. But thank you.

I feel like you could have at least tried to find one that said “Moichandising”. Just seems like a misquote here.

Not enough hours in a day - but I do agree with you

It’s only about 20lbs. Does get heavy vs. a rifle. And the new iterations are a bit lighter

But the main problem is the ammo.

The para saws became standard after I left. And now I hear they get nice handguns too. Sigh. For me, the saw was just a really good way to learn remedial action because it was guaranteed to jam all the time.

The 240. Now there’s a bad sonovabitch.

Believe me, I’m an old guy, Twitch is “new” to me.

It’s like $5 to be a subscriber to the channel per month (I’m not a member, I just watch the videos later if they look interesting) -much more cost effective and targeted than a random book, which apparently may or may not deliver what it “moichandises”…
