Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Unfortunately, I’ve done so much force feeding I’ve lost all appreciation for food. Big Macs, $200 Wagyu beef, all the same to me.

I think this is a great idea and one that will stay around. I mean - how cool to know you’ll get in the rack or on a bench.

Yeah, but did you hear those couple of squeaks between 3:00 and 3:10?

:joy:

Wanted to give it up the first time I saw Tommy Emmanuel on YT in 2006, then I saw him 3 more times live at BB King’s and it hurt more and more each time. Where my Aussie’s at? Dude’s a legend there, one of the greatest acoustic guitarists ever, and the only guy who can play drums, lead, rhythm, and bass on the guitar at the same time, with a finger that he split open the song before:

You just need a different guitar.

@flappinit Hah! We are bad for each other. She’s the psycho distance runner and lifelong athlete too, so it typically goes

Wife-“Ok, so I thought I was having a heart attack earlier, but it turns out I just pulled a muscle that makes breathing feel like knives. I could probably get in a short run later, yeah?”

Me-“I am really not a good person to ask that question to…”

@dagill2 I am less the “here is how to make that hurt less” dude and more the “Let me help guide you on your vision quest” type of help. I let people know "Oh yeah, on day 3 after the injury your back is going to start hurting because it had to pick up the slack for your rib cage and it DOESN’T like doing that. Also, you will keep reinjuring the damn thing and it will feel like your ribs jumped off your sternum. Don’t panic! That almost never happens.

I bet you it’s fine. It’s probably fine."

In line with the guitar talk, my great uncle called me to tell me he had a guitar signed by B.B. King at his house and invited me over to check it out (I’m not a great player but I dabble).

Was pretty pumped and then…it was just a guitar. Definitely a great quality one and everything but totally was nothing special (to me). Told my uncle that and he just had this look of disbelief on his face, like he couldn’t believe I wasn’t in love with it. His wife said he just kind of sat with it admiring it when he got it, haha, so I’m sure what I said was basically blasphemy. He’s been a player since the 60’s, and been in bands and everything. Very serious player.

Kinda related:

For the past 10 days, without missing a beat, I have gotten, once a day, a strong cramp in one of my intercostal muscles, right where the heart is. Every time in the same spot.

It kind of feels like having a heart attack for a split second. Not that I know what an actual heart attack feels like; just going by imagination.

I’m getting used to it, every day when it happens it takes me breah away for a second and I go like, “oh, here we go again.” So, yeah.

Been dealing with this with my husband the last 2 years, never seen pain that could make a 300lb meathead cry like an intercostal pull. Problem is the rib pops out too so I gotta pop it back in for him. sucks mega balls

it’s not so much the guitar, per se, but I’m sure there’s a lot of history behind it. He wasn’t admiring the guitar, he was probably just thinking about BB King and what he means to him, all the memories, etc, associated with the music that was played either by the guitar, or by BB King and similar music/musicians.

It’s like the Venice beach Gold’s Gym where Arnold trained - to most people, it’s just a gym, to people who train and were inspired by Arnold, it’s fucking Mecca.

On the topic of old things, I really love antiques, jewelry and old money stuff, but with the way tech and values are developing, I’m afraid all this stuff will be “worthless “ by the time I can afford them :pensive:

I swear I’m born in the wrong decade :joy:

You know, if you love something it has worth…

Build it as a platform and sell to multiple gyms, just slot in branding and what not. I.e., template your product. I can imagine the various tables right now listing the courses. What you need to get down pat is a decent way to admin it. You don’t want to have them have to call you up to make schedule changes. Doesn’t have to be an iOS/Android app. A desktop/mobile-friendly webapp should serve just fine. Django might be a good bet.

You just inspired me.

I don’t know python (yet) so Django is out of question for now.

What I CAN do pretty well, is create a php-based platform, using php and mysql for the back-end and a nice html5, jquery, or whatever front-end interface.

I’ll have to learn Ajax, so I can make updates real-time both for the admin and user end.
I have never used Ajax, or whatever technology allows things to change dynamically and real time within a php page, so that’ll be the learning component for me.

I can organize a database with users, courses, and relations between those entities, allowing admins to view a calendar and add courses, defining days, time, and open spots. Then users can make reservations, and according to their subscription or type of membership, even recurring plans.

I can start working on this as soon as I’m done with my exams in a week or so.

Or if you know JS you could conceivably pick-up React and then you won’t have to sweat Ajax. Another alternative to polling with Ajax is Server-Sent Events.

Since you don’t absolutely have to deliver you can build it using whatever tech you want to learn (and maintain). If you succeed, you get a product, great. If you don’t complete it you’ll have learned something anyway.

I’m studying JS at the minute! I really like it.

However, I’ve never used it as a server-side language. Node.js is in my “future topics that I want to learn” list, so it’s an option.

I’ll do some research

Edit:

I just looked up React and apparently it’s not server side like I thought. I’m in the middle of a class rn so I can’t do much more researching at the moment, but to your knowledge, can it be used to do stuff like update an html table that you filled with data fetched from a db using php without reloading the page, if a record is added while the page is open?

That’d be what I’m looking for.

That’s a good thing, no? You’ll be able to afford them quicker.

You can, not the most “ergonomic” interop though. Run php server side with a websocket set-up in React and your backend code and it’ll work but… I don’t use php much.

I’ll look up what the best way of doing something like that is, then.

I decided to dust off the old bass, which I hadn’t touched in probably 15 years. Had a look at what the kids are playing these days and then:

Yeah, fuck that lol
