Fish Oil Stories

Can someone explain this to me:- my fish oil capsules state that they are 1000mg Capsules. And then they go on to say that EPA is 180mg and DHA is 120mg (or vice versa, cant remember) and altogether its 300mg. Does that mean the actual Omega3 content of each capsule is 300mg or is it the full 1000mg?

Is EPA and DHA the total sum of Omega 3 or are they parts of it? Trying to figure out which oil / capsule is the better priced one for omega 3 content, fish oil or flaxseed oil.
You can’t compare the two (fish oil and flax oil) straight up. There is no EPA/DHA is Flax. Essentially, the omega 3 fatty acids in flax oil (linolenic acid) can be converted to
EPA/DHA in the body. The conversion rate is low. I think 25-30% is an estimate, and it varies by the person. Fish oil is not all that expensive.

At 300 mg of combined DHA/EPA it would take 10-20 caps daily to reach the 3-6 gram level per day. Sam’s or even the Spring Valley (WalMart) brand are fairly cheap. I think at Sam’s they are $7 for 300 caps. To answer your other question: EPA/DHA are Omega 3’s, but not all Omega 3 fatty acids are EPA/DHA. Clear as mud?

Has anybody found affordable borage oil capsules? I’ve been getting mine from Advanced Orthomolecular Research (GLA-240), but those are pretty pricey.
I take Source Naturals Mega-GLA. I get it at AllStarHealth. $21.39 for 120 300MG GLA gelcaps.

And I use the enteric coated fish oil from Costco. It’s high quality, and no fish burps. Plus it’s 480mg of EPA/DHA per cap (or close to that; from memory).

I also don’t see the point of complaining about a fish oil ‘belch’. You take the capsule, for your health not for the taste. Awhile later you may burp. It may taste funny for a second. Then its over. Salud

None of you should do any whining about fish oil CAPSULES. Christ. Buy a bottle of unflavored fish oil SANS capsule, and start knocking back 1.5 oz shots of that. Then talk to me about awful taste and belching.

I did this for about 3-4 months, until even the thought of taking a fish oil shot made me wretch. Then I switched to capsules. Trust me, I’ll never complain.
It may. But I wouldn’t expect anything big, especially if the rest of your diet isn’t tuned. If you pay attention to the bigger picture, it could help more. You may want to read this John Berardi article:

But why no weight lifting? Its more beneficial than cardio.

I also take carleson’s lemon flavored fish oil. I actually don’t mind taking it straight.

Much better then taking flax oil straight. I’ve held back from puking more then once on that.

I’ve also taken pumpkin seed oil in the past and that tasted really good too.

I take 2 fish oil caps with each of my six meals.

1 enteric coated and 1 regular both from Costco.

Total Cholesterol was 110
HDLs were 46

My family has a TERRIBLE history of high cholesterol. Brother was put on medication @ 24.

Between Spike and Fish Oil I no longer take ADHD medication.

No longer have any abnormal knee swelling which occured in hockey and seeing as I spend about 10x as long abusing my knees thats pretty impressive.

My father is 60 years old and has been taking fish oil for a very long time. His father passed away at 55 and the father before him at 56 from heart attacks. My dad’s echocardogram which looked for overall clotting and hardening was so good it was off the charts.

I also take UDO’s Choice 1 tbsp before bed with 1 tbsp olive oil and then the same thing again when I wake up in the middle of the night.

I think UDO’s Choice is the worst tasting oil I have ever come incontact with. I’d rather drink Penzoil. Fuck.

Carleson’s lemon flavored fish oil… that’s the lemon flavored oil I referred to earlier. Seems like a few people take this one. It’s tested for Mercury and other common contaminants that bioaccumulate in fish too. I reckon that’s important if it’s gonna be a regular dietary supplement.

On a Sunday in July I went on an all day trip to a theme park and I was out in the sun all day, without sunscreen.

That night I had a nasty burn. Monday and Tuesday were the most uncomfortable days I can remember, it hurt to shower, to dress, to sleep, etc. Wednesday there was no pain at all, I felt one hundred percent better.

(My buddy was pissin’ and moanin’ through Friday.)

I’m confident the speedy recovery was due to the fish oil.

That’s my story, BTW I use the Sam’s club brand and take fifteen caps a day all at once.

I have read that the recommended dosage is 1 tsp per 50 lbs of body weight (fish oil). If you get the capsules I reckon you’d just do a conversion. For me I think it comes out to 15 capsules a day, but not to take more than 15/day.

I started the Velocity diet in May, and began supplementing with fish oil for first time. Used a cheap brand called Nature’s Bounty.

I lost 13 lbs on the Velocity diet. THen I couldn’t handle it anymore and more or less relapsed into old eating habits. After that I lost another 12 lbs, I don’t know why!

THe only thing that changed from where I was before I started the V diet was fish oil and I started lifting again. However, I should add that though I lifted diligently for all of May, in June I worked out like 5 times tops.

No cardio other than a few games of pick up ball

I have to think that the additional 12 lbs were caused by a combo of fish oil and that my metabolism had picked up from starting to lift again.

Absolutely no DOMS at all, even though I hadn’t lifted in a while. THough Surge definitely helped with that…

You know, if you decide to search this site for terms like “omega-3” or “fish oil” or “DHA”, etc., you’ll find dozens, if not hundreds of references on fish oil - many that corroborate some of these stories (and yes, some that do not).

Overall, there is sooo much data on their health effects there’s little question that they are beneficial to long term health, especially in the modern world. Short term benefits attributed to omega-3 fats can be influenced by exercise and eating patterns, of course, so stories aren’t strong evidence - as many of us know. But this is one example where there is enough hard data to compliment the anecdotal stuff to sell me personally.

Still, keep a critical eye on dose, source, etc., eh?

This is great info, guys. I kinda tried fish oil earlier, but let the problems with it push me away. I will definitely have to give it another go, and make myself stick to it. I’ll try to let y’all know how it goes for me, too.

Thanks

Oh, and this is another call for Biotest to roll their product out soon!!!

According to Consumer Reports freezing them before taking them helps reduce burping.
I think the only problem you might have with freezing the pills is that it might not digest fast enough and you might just shit it out ( I don?t know for sure) I know the capsules are meant to dissolve after so long in the body and if they were frozen they may not though out in time. Just a thought.

I’ve got one for you. My wife and I were visiting her mom’s house over the holidays. She came up to us one day and said she has some chewable fish oil capsules that taste like lemon. I said I’d try it, popped one in my mouth, and started to chew.

It was lemon flavored alright, but it was just a regular old capsule and was clearly NOT made for chewing. Thank God it was lemon-flavored, at least.

I’ve been taking Dr Dave’s Best fish oil capsules for a little over a month now. I dropped 18 lbs. and 2 inches since then, feel much much better in health, feel clearer and ran my APFT 2 miler in 13:26 (down from over 15 min.). The belches suck, so I fight that off with winterfresh gum even though they aren’t THAT bad. I think you gotta start on the fish oil if you haven’t already and see for yourself. I started out immediately with 4 softgels 3 times a day. I felt like hell for a few days while my urine smelled REALLY bad. Suddenly I felt better and just started today with the two softgels 3 times a day, now that I dropped all that fat and got a handle on my appetite for breads and lard-creating foods. I’m noticing great strides in my athletic performance and recovery, as well as in my joints and connective tissue soreness.

Now thats a story. Awesome man.

How do ‘total EFAs’ (pills with omega 3, 6, and 9) compare to just straight fish oil pills?

I was under the impression that such a large variety of EFAs was better than just fish oil and its omega 3s.

I have the brand ‘health from the sun’ which has ALA, EPA, DHA, GLA, Linoleic acid, and Oleic acid, and its omega 3s come from fish oil.

Its a bit expensive though, so what is the consensus on this product compared to just fish oil.

Thanks,
k

Went on a business trip and put some fish oil pills in my shorts pocket. I didn’t take the pills but left them in my pocket. I washed them with the pills and it was the worst smell I have ever smelled. The worst thing about this is I was telling my self, “what is that horrible smell?” I wore the shorts on and wore them for a half a day before finally figuring out what the smell was.

Moral to the story, “Don’t ever stuff fish oil tabs in your pocket and wash them.” You can kiss that load of wash “goodbye.”

I would just go with an omega 3 (DHA/EPA) pill. You probably get enough omega 6 in your diet, and I don’t think 9 is essential. Plus the 3/6/9 or mixtures like Udo’s are really expensive.

Do a search on Lowery or Berardi to find out more about how 3’s and 6’s work.
