Fish Oil Stories

Let me start off by saying that I don’t like the taste of salmon. I can’t stand it.

I started taking fish oil here a while back, and I was really having some bad burps from it. I pushed through, knowing how important it was.

Then one day one of the capsules burst in my mouth. I’m not sure how. I nearly puked on my keyboard at work. I tasted fish oil for the rest of the day.

I can’t do it any more. I just can’t do it.

Folly,
Were the capsules that you were taking entericly (sp?) coated? That is supposed to preven the smell and fish burps. The ones that I take are from Wal-Mart and I haven’t had a problem with burps or smell.

You need to get Carlson’s lemon-flavored liquid. No chance of it bursting in your mouth, and absolutely 0 fishy taste. If it gives you burps, you have lemon burps, which bother me a lot less than fish burps

OMG…

If only I had seen this yesterday. I bought 250 fishoil caps this morning. These belches are horrible.

Sigh.

If you take fish oil caps to work every day, be sure to take them all.

If you don’t take them all, then be sure to put them into a ziplock bag or something again when you take them home.

If you take them home, be sure to take them out of your pocket immediately.

If you don’t take them out of your pocket immediately, be sure to empty your pockets when you do laundry.

If you don’t empty your pockets when you do laundry, be sure you always zip up the ziplock bag when you put them in your pocket.

If you don’t zip up the ziplock bag, be sure to do the same load of laundry multiple times to get rid of the fishy smell.

One or two extra washes after finding the ziplock bag and throwing it away will usually do the trick.

Don’t let anyone else use the dryer right away, as it will still have that nice fishy smell for a couple loads as well.

Moral of the story, if you don’t take all of your damned fish oil caps at work, don’t take the farking things back home with you… just throw them out!

It’s been a couple of years since that happened. I don’t remember if they were enterically coated, but I will look for those as well. It’s worth a shot to try again, I guess. Thanks

None of you should do any whining about fish oil CAPSULES. Christ. Buy a bottle of unflavored fish oil SANS capsule, and start knocking back 1.5 oz shots of that. Then talk to me about awful taste and belching.

I did this for about 3-4 months, until even the thought of taking a fish oil shot made me wretch. Then I switched to capsules. Trust me, I’ll never complain.

I have seen studies to the contrary.

My bad, I need to go back and edit that post. What I MEANT to say was::

I have noticed that DOMS is incredibly less since I started taking fish oil.

hmmm…no stories huh

I’ve just added fish oil back into my diet so no stories here yet.

I can vouch for Carlson’s Fish Oil, though. That stuff is good! Unlike TC’s column, I couldn’t find any at Whole Foods, but bought it at the Vitamin Shoppe.

I’m sensitive to fish too. If I taste or even smell certain types of fish/seafood I’ll start gagging almost immeditately. I could somewhat tolerate fish oil caps, but Carlson’s does an excellent job in hiding the fish taste. I can have it as is, or mix it with a Grow! shake, no problems.

…Hmm well there was this time me and a chick ran out of lube and the nearest thing to hand was a bottle of good ole Seven Seas Cod liver oil

Not the first time I’ve heard a girl hide behind that line. “It’s not me, its the fish oil lube, I SWEAR!”

If you want cod liver oil that has no bad taste whatsoever, go to this link: Mercola Market - Shop Products Recommended by Dr. Joseph Mercola

It is lemon flavored and at least my first couple of bottles have tasted about as good as a fish oil supplement can taste. I coudln’t detect a hint of fish flavor. There’s also a lot of information on the website link above about the benefits of cod liver oil. It takes a while to get it… took 3-4 weeks for me.

I’ve been taking Dr Dave’s Best fish oil capsules for a little over a month now. I dropped 18 lbs. and 2 inches since then, feel much much better in health, feel clearer and ran my APFT 2 miler in 13:26 (down from over 15 min.). The belches suck, so I fight that off with winterfresh gum even though they aren’t THAT bad. I think you gotta start on the fish oil if you haven’t already and see for yourself. I started out immediately with 4 softgels 3 times a day. I felt like hell for a few days while my urine smelled REALLY bad. Suddenly I felt better and just started today with the two softgels 3 times a day, now that I dropped all that fat and got a handle on my appetite for breads and lard-creating foods. I’m noticing great strides in my athletic performance and recovery, as well as in my joints and connective tissue soreness.

Yeah, like many, I couldn’t tolerate the fish burps induced by the capsules…I now use “Health From The Sun” liquid fish oil (orange)…ZERO fishy taste/burps…It tastes like a liquified orange Lolipop.

The knock on liquid is the convenience factor, if you travel. Otherwise, it’s the only way to go (for me personally).

As for as effectiveness, it has GREATLY reduced a benign arrhythmia condition (PVC’s)that I’ve tolerated for about 20 years. It’s anti-arrhythmogenic effects are documented in clinical studies…worked for me.

What is this burp you all speak of? I mean, yeah, I burp after I take the capsules, but I don’t taste anything.

Well, my penis is now the size of a 1978 Suburban. True story.

(Okay, okay, at least DOMS is pretty much non-existent).

Will fish oil help me lost weight if i am not actually lifting weights but doing cardio and dieting to lose baby weight?
indra wrote:
As for flaxseed oil I’m not really sure this works and have read an article about reduced testosterone when you take flaxseed oil so i don’t touch it. Not really sure why you would if you take fish oils.
I used to take both fish and flax oils until I read recently that the fats in flax are associated with higher prostate cancer rates while the fats in fish are associated with lower. Sure, they probably cancel-out (and it could be hogwash to begin with), but why take a chance? I get enough through the fish oil, really.

lately i’ve been taking “omega 3 fish oils” from “olympian labs”. they say on the label “tested for mercury and toxic minerals” of course it doesn’t say what the results of that testing is haha !

anyway i’ve been through a couple of bottles and they don’t smell or give me any burps at all. the soft gels are crystal clear and the oil’s straw colored so you can see if there’s any oxidation or not. still for all i know it’s canola oil in there and fish oil’s really the new snake oil ha ha !

Can someone explain this to me:- my fish oil capsules state that they are 1000mg Capsules. And then they go on to say that EPA is 180mg and DHA is 120mg (or vice versa, cant remember) and altogether its 300mg. Does that mean the actual Omega3 content of each capsule is 300mg or is it the full 1000mg?

Is EPA and DHA the total sum of Omega 3 or are they parts of it? Trying to figure out which oil / capsule is the better priced one for omega 3 content, fish oil or flaxseed oil.
