First Powerlifting Meet

apwsearch, do you see some things he could improve with his deadlift technique? It looks to me as though he lacks leg drive when he initiates the pull and gets his hips through too slowly.
Well, what I would state is that he needs to speed up his hips. On his third attempt he was right on the edge of a ramp which would have gotten the lift turned down.

He should keep working on shoulder flexibility allowing him to lockout further down his thighs, and just really think about pushing the hips forward as soon as the bar breaks.

It is interesting in that from what I can gather he trains at a foo foo gym and doesn’t really have any powerlifters around him.

IMO, that makes his performance even more powerful.

Thanks for the technique pointers. I am upping my deadlift frequency right now and doing some higher reps with straps. Pulled 405x8 EASY touch and go yesterday (at the end of my workout), and plan on going up from there. I really feel like working on my back strength is going to help, since it feels like my back is going out before anything else when the weights get close to my 1RM. My legs don’t really seem to be a weak point.

It’s nice that I don’t get hassled by the gym employees now for a little clanking. No one really comes near me. My best friends in the gym are Slayer and Disturbed. Listening to the music on the radio is AWFUL.

Oh, and flexibility is high on my list of priorities right now. Never thought before that shoulder flexibility could effect my deadlift. That is interesting.

Yeah I got some videos but they are in the process of getting uploaded from a friend’s camera that lives in wisconsin. The file size on them is too big to send in an e-mail so we are figuring out how to send them over to me still.

Benching was definitely my best lift that day, it really surprised me. After I hit 308 I just figured hell, let’s just go for it. I absolutely loved the bars they used in that meet.
Get him to stick it on You tube.

edit: Ooops, way too late!

Anyhow, congrats on some great lifts!

Well done on the lifts S.M.B!

Oh I have the videos now. Just didn’t feel like posting a crappy performance when I had better material to post. Maybe I will put the files together and upload it.

Great job!!!

There was my first meet.

Lifting in Nike Reax shoes is just awful.

Squats looked really bad in particular, I narrowed my hand spacing and that tightened everything up.
