Flex in the bar basically lets you start the pull from a slightly higher position. You’ll notice the difference immediately, even at 375-415 lbs, it still cuts the distance. but the guys who get the most out of it learn to use that flex to generate momentum before the plates leaves the floor.
Yeh ive watched when they pre flex it right, like little pulls to get ready then boom if im correct right?
I’d recommend you low ball your bench opener unless you’ve been practicing your rest on the chest. Start practicing that anyway

thanks those numbers are with a pause on my chest, thanks for the advice though
I’m actually attending this meet as well, and was going to compete in the 20-23 165 lbs division. I weigh bout 167.5 generally, and could make it pretty easy. But I dont know if it will be worth my while to cut at all. My PR’s are as follows
Bench- 295
Squat- 415
Deadlift- 455
I’ll probably open up with something pretty light, just so
I know I can get it, then hit something in the proximity of the weights listed above, then go for 300, 425 and 475 in the third and final attempt.
Should I cut the 2-3 lbs or just compete at 181?

Skipping the last meal of the day the night before weigh in and not having breakfast til after you’re weighed would probably get you that tbh.
What time of the day, and after how many meals, do you weight 167.5 at?
Its the end of the day for me right now, and I weigh 168.5. I have had 4 meals today, and might en up eating one more time before the night is up. This is my first powerlifting meet, and I havent had to make weight since wrestling season my senior year, 2 and a half years ago. This is conjuring up all sorts of terrible imagry, haha.

If I was only 2 pounds away from making a lower weight class, I’d do it, especially if its a 24 hr weigh in.
That is nothing. For my last meet, I dropped my last 2 pounds the hour before weigh ins.
Thanks. One more question. How long do Powerifting Meet’s last, generally speaking? I imagine its entirely proportional to the amount of participants, but your average powerlifitng meet goes for how long, would you say?
All day
Practice your cues and know the rules of your fed. If they have a squat command, make sure to wait for it. Same goes for the rack command. On bench, same deal, make sure you are ready to wait a second if they’re calling them long. Wait for the rack command. Deadlift is easy, just don’t hitch or ramp it.
Aim low on all openers. You can always go up if you feel good but you can’t go down if you miss the first one…

You’re going to be there a while. Bring FOOD AND DRINK. You are gonna be fuckin starving before the bench if you don’t anything. Bring several bottles of gatorade or protein drinks or something similar and a bunch of food. Sandwiches, protein bars, bananas whatever.
monster energy XD
And i almost forgot, snickers marathons bars ![]()

If a meet starts at 10am it will usually go to minimum early after noon, depending on the amount of flights and the federation (whether theres bench only, push-pull etc.). Sometimes you have to be there earlier in the morning, say 8am for weigh ins, again depending on federation.
