Fired After Heckling Reporter

What if the man was filmed protesting 0bama and his boss was an avid supporter of 0bama and fired him? Bosses reason was he didn’t fit the image of the company

What if the man was filmed picking up an American Flag that was being trampled upon and was arrested and his boss disagreed with him on freedom of speech and fired him. Bosses reason was he didn’t fit the image of the company

Is any reason good enough to be fired if the boss/company decides it does not fit the image of the company? Your thoughts?
You’re confusing company interests with boss’s personal views and beliefs. You can’t be fired for that, that’s discrimination. The company has no views or beliefs. The company’s sole interest is revenue generation which is created with a good public image in order to not deter potential and existing customers AND to appeal to the general public.

Anything that is not socially acceptable or is viewed as negative in public eye, justifies job termination if an employee engages in it.
Regarding the bolded part, of course you can be fired for it. Hunters, carnivores, and Obama supporters are not protected classes.

As a (former) boss in an at-will State, I can fire anyone for any reason…except for race, creed, color, etc.

I’m not sure if this is a US/non-US issue, but some of the poster’s in this thread seem to think that employees have protections that actually don’t exist (in the US).
What about grown men who are dumb enough to shout moronic things into a television camera and then cry fowl when other people find out about it? Is that a protected class?

Thank goodness stupidity is not a protected class.

I have a bit of a different take on why I would have fired the guy. It’s not that he’s the face of my company or that he somehow doesn’t live up to company values, but it would make me question his judgment. If he can’t be trusted to not yell FHRITP into a TV camera, can I trust him to do other tasks that may require more maturity and better judgment?

While this is certainly true, the reason for the dismissal would have a bearing on eligibility for unemployment compensation.

Exactly. I wouldn’t want someone who makes exceedingly poor choices to work for me, either. Maybe the guy has a ton of redeeming qualities and this was just a momentary lapse in judgement that is not at all indicative of his decision-making skills. But given the fact that his employer was willing to fire him over it, I don’t see any reason to believe that to be the case.

When I picture a model employee, impulsiveness, vulgarity, immaturity, and an inability to foresee the consequences of your decisions are not the qualities that come to mind.

There is a misnomer, perhaps largely perpetuated by social media or a declining standard of civics education, whereby Americans automatically assume that any repercussion(s) for expressing some sort of an opinion are inherently a violation of a person’s free speech rights.

Somewhere along the line it has been assumed that private sector, at-will employers are held accountable under the legal auspices of the First Amendment, which isn’t at all the case.

The Constitution does protect the freedom of speech of every citizen, and even of non-citizens, but only from restriction by the Congress and state or local governments. There are plenty of other places where you could speak but where speech is other expressed or where you must suffer the full weight of the consequences of your speech, whether fair or not.

I’ve been called an asshole quite a few times by quite a diverse group of individuals over a good span of time. For the longest time I thought, how am I the asshole? and went about doing what I did. It took a long time for me to start asking, “If ALLLL of these people who, independent of one another, all think I’m an asshole, maybe I should examining why it is they think I’m an asshole.”

So I sat down and went over my behavior towards them and communications with them - exchanges and what-not, just to see if they were overly sensitive or if I was, indeed, an asshole - regardless of intent. You see, intent is quite meaningless if it and interpretation aren’t in sync. It turns out, a lot of the time, when I thought I was being charming, funny, witty, what-have you, I was really just kind of being an asshole in their eyes. Most younger guys will probably say “Who cares, fuck them, I know who I am, yada yada yada” and that’s all well and good. Until you need a favor. Until you need someone to take you seriously. Until…

Now, I haven’t really changed my outlook on life or any of my previously held values, for the most part. I have, however, changed my approach to interacting with people and a lot less people call me an asshole.

Point is, it seems as though a goodly few strangers on the internet think you’re a moron - when people seem to be the most brutally honest with how they interact with people. Oh alright. Just because you are going to have to seek employment in the future and going with this attitude won’t be the smartest thing to do…

You have me confused with your parents or some authority figure in your school life who is obligated to cover your ass and issue punishment as a way of educating you when you fuck up while still looking out for your best interests.

I am not one of them. Your future boss will not be either. If you can’t handle this fact, do not seek employment in the private sector.

As a director of a Company, I have a duty to the Company and it’s stakeholders to act in their best interests. I am personally liable for that. The Company has a duty, and is liable under the employment act(or whatever it’s called in your country), to compensate you fairly as an employee according to it’s provisions.

I am not your friend. I am not your school teacher. If I educate and train you for a higher position, it is because I consider you an asset to the Company.

So, get this part clear: Whatever I do will be consistent with acting in the best interests of the Company, NOT YOURS. In other words, if I fail to sack you when you pull some silly stunt in public, and keeping you will be potentially detrimental to the Company, I will not be doing my duty UNLESS you are big enough of an asset that keeping you will far outweigh any potential losses.

If I let you get away with some socially deviant things which I do not perceive to be affecting your performance, nor a potential threat to the Company as long as it is done in private, you should consider yourself lucky that I am open minded, instead of placing a responsibility to cover your ass on me when things fuck up. Hence, as in the example above, you let your shit go public and soil the Company’s image, you are gone.

Oh wait… you were not expecting this? You expected some sort of pseudo moral debate where you start crying about integrity or whatever equally unrelated nonsense you pull out of your ass to get your way everytime you are denied something you feel you are entitled to? Again, I’m sorry kid, but I think you are old enough to understand that the world doesn’t owe you a living. Do not over-estimate what you’re worth. And, no, stomping the floor and holding your breath still won’t fly with your future employer.

Enjoy your time in school.

And in response to your last line… ni3 shi4 bai2 chi1.

Integrity is about internal consistency of moral principle. Not caring about someone doing something but pretending you care to fire him is not having integrity. Doing something you don’t think is a problem and doesn’t hurt anyone but frowned upon is not related to not having integrity. Internal consistency.

Once again you fail. You will come back with a lame ‘’ you are an idiot’’ or variation of it in madarin or whatever because you don’t have anything and … you are an idiot.

You may be the coolest son of a bitch to ever grace the Earth IRL, but, honestly, on this message board, you’re a bit of a know it all who seems to only know shit.
Lol, exactly. Dude’s a moron and a jackass.

I’d rather have “weak” lifts than a weak intelligence, which Jasmin continually exhibits. A lack of intelligence and a spoiled rotten entitlement mentality.

As usual, it’s hilarious that someone with no pictures and no videos calls someone else out. Talk about integrity.
USMCCD, you and some others who all agree to each other have in common that they were at some point ‘‘called out’’ by me about what they written and are now butthurt because of it. You should all go take a beer together indeed.

yeah, that jasmin dude’s a dick for sure. Not sure why any of you even respond to him

As an employer, I can tell you this. You can have mass orgies with transsexual midgets for all I care. But if you are caught on, or stupid enough to post your escapades on social media, and the public finds out you are one of my employees, you are gone.

I do not run a billion dollar corporation, nor do I spend millions on lawyers. Would you take my side in this case?
If you don’t care about someone doing something, why would you fire him over it? It is called integrity.

Sorry, kid. I have told you before that I’m not going to waste my time giving you any attention.
Too late. I think you are a degenerate, but now I know you have no integrity too. Why don’t you go with your friends to south-east asia to ‘‘get your number up’’?
You are a very confused kid. I’ll make this clear one last time and hopefully you’ll get the message and go pester someone else.

Since you brought up South East Asia, there is a saying in Mandarin that literally translates to “looking down on others through the eyes of a dog”, and I find it a very fitting description of you. And this is why I cannot be bothered with you.

Bye.
It’s hilarious that Mr. Integrity here is the same dumbass kid that wanted to hack his college’s admissions office because he was too dumb to plan out his education properly. In light of this it is equally hilarious that he is throwing the word hypocrite around. He probably doesn’t know what it means.

Thank you for taking the time to write that out, as a business owner I could not agree more.

Slow clap for straying away with generic insults that are not even related to anything? Come back when you have something, like USMCCD.
