Finding a Workout Plan as a Hardgainer

@TrainForPain

Yeah lol. I wrote that at school without thinking. it took the mods a minute to approve it so I should’ve checked, I got 4.5 and 5.5 mentally mixed up lmao. If I ran a 5.5 that would be bad even for O line,
My speed has never been an issue, I’m close to being fastest on the team, I’ve always been the deep threat reciever so I’ve just been hoping to bulk up.

Would something like Deep Water cause me to lose speed even temporarily or is it a lean bulk?

@j4gga2 I haven’t been able to join my school’s basketball team because of time issues but I play a ton of streetball.

I’ll also check out those sources. I really would like to train my speed even more and maybe get sub 4.4 by senior year, it’s a huge goal but it would put me in the the top 300 in the nation most likely.

A training program by itself is not going to cause weight loss or gain - that’s down to your diet.

I’m in the camp that says you can only have one priority; any more than that, by definition, become conflicts.

It’s not up to me to pick your priorities, but let’s assume it’s speed:

  1. Priority: speed (you can only improve stride length or frequency)
  • Supporting goal 1: improve technique
  • Supporting goal 2: improve force production
  • Supporting goal 3: increase strength (lower body)

So then running becomes both a training tool (specificity principal) and a testing method. Your gym time likely focuses on high squats and various jumps, with some power cleans and bench press because you feel like it. You can’t get so sore it affects your running, though, because that’s your primary training method; no worries, because you have benchmarks, so it’s also your test to see if the gym is helping or too much.

So in that case, I don’t like deep water for you. Not because it’s not hard or you’ll accidentally gain 50 lbs, but it’s work that doesn’t contribute to your goal. Remember, by definition, that means it’s detracting from our goal.

If, however, your goal is some amount of weight gain without increasing your 40m time, that whole cascade changes and deep water may be appropriate.

I would talk to your coach about what he thinks is best for you. If he has put kids into college, then he is in touch with scouts; he should be able to tell you exactly what they’re looking for right now (it changes every year).

That’s my $0.02 and I have not been involved in collegiate sports in more than 15 years, so take it for what it’s worth.

I was hoping maybe to train with a weight gain plan like Deep Water, a 4.54 40 yard dash time is good enough for college and I’ll have my junior and senior seasons to improve it, but at my height I’d like to be 200ish by the end of my varsity career so I’ll really be more well rounded for college ball, I don’t wanna be stuck being the fast skinny burner reciever for the rest of my career.

I was thinking maybe train with Deep Water over the spring and summer and pack on as much muscle as physically possible, and then focus on speed training and cutting my 40 time under 4.5 closer to and during the season, and pick up a more standard PPL split.

That’s a great idea about talking to my coach about scouting priorities, I know I’ll have scouts present at least some of my games so it would be nice knowing what they look for.

When you say their priorities change by year do you mean that some will focus on speed, size, change of direction, catching, or blocking, all of that changes based on the year?

It all changes based on their own gaps and how the game is evolving. Like there were no 250 lbs d-linemen in my day, and now that’s a baller edge rusher. Then maybe one hear the colleges you were interested in have all 6’7” possession receivers and they want a slot threat. I’m just too far way from the game to have any idea l, but your coach will know.

Keep in mind every college football program still has a strength and conditioning coach whose only real job is to make the skinny freshmen bigger.

Thanks for everything guys. I think I’ve got this thing figured out and I’ll be able to make serious gains now.
