I’ve been looking forward to making this post! I know it might not be allot for most of you guys, but it’s a big accomplishment for me. It’s the one lift I’ve really been wanting to nail, more of a mental thing, I just really wanted it.
I’ve been chasing a 405 DL for a couple months now and the closest I’ve gotten was 385lbs about a month ago for a single. I’m 168lbs, 12.5%bf and used wrist straps.
I took last week off in hopes of clearing up a shoulder injury so I haven’t done DL’s in around 2 weeks. Went in today feeling so so and started my warm up.
135x4
225x6
225x6
275x4
295x4
315x4
315x4
335x4 (I was feeling pretty good after this so started to think about it)
365x2
395x1 (song: battery by Metallica)
2min rest
405x1 (song: I get wet Andrew W.K)
Was I ever pumped to get that, let out a pretty loud “FUCK YEAH!” with fist pump…think I scared a few people away…hahaha.
Man, what a feeling, almost felt sick afterwards, and my hands hurt a bit. I thought about taking my camera in today, but wasn’t feeling it so i didn’t…wish I would have.
I think there is a massive BBQ cheat meal in the near future for a reward!
I guess this is what it’s all about, In the words of Winston Churchill:
Just a thought, if your warming up for a max single then that is a unecessarly high volume warm up.
If I were you I might try the following
135x5
225x3
275x3
315x3
350x2
375x1
405x1 PR
415x1 PR
Whether or not the purpose of you pulling today was to acheive this PR (maybe you wanted to get some lighter work sets in) you should still learn to warm up for efficently it will allow you to handle more weight.
Yeah, I certainly didn’t think I was going for a PR today, hence the volume. It was just one of those days when everything was going right.
I don’t feel guilty about going for a massive cheat as I’ve been waiting for a good excuse, but being a FFB, I gotta pick them carefully. I eat clean pretty much 100% of the time in fear of getting fat again, but I’m slowly coming to the realization that a cheat a week is going to help, not hinder the gains. I’ve only put on around 8lbs in the past few months but have managed to keep the BF in order.
That’s awesome man, there must be something in the air, I pulled PR’s today too!!
As the others said, your volume for a max test is too high (I know that wasn’t the intention today, but for next time ya know…?). There’s probably another 10-20lb with a smarter warm up!

Agreed, I might try 600 this weekend. I’ll do 135 x 5, 225 x 2, 315,365 405 455, 505 x 1, then 600.

Nice…what did pull?[/quote]
Sumo 6rm!! It was previously my best for 5, but that was after a heavy peaking cycle focused on my sumo. Today was done after not training it hard for 11 weeks. So pretty good result there!!

I kept logs since I was in college and this allowed me to predict lifts pretty darn close based on rep prs or bodyweight prs in case of cutting. Right now I’m shooting for 600. It’s a little soon since my last pr attempt, but lifting is going well, so I might give it a shot.
I haven’t missed a heavy deadlift pr in well over a year so based on my lifts, i think it’s here.
I did a 365 against the minis a week before my 370. This was raw. I just did a 405 with my metal deadlifter against the minis last week. I know I don’t get 40 pounds from my metal deadlifter, maybe 10-15. 20 tops. Going with 20 puts me at 590. Since I’ve gotten very strong on my lockout, I think it’s a go.
On push’s thread I posted about how hard the minis pull. I get over 250 pounds at lockout on the minis, probably close to 300 actually. So that’s my logic.
This long, drawn out explanation is just to show how important logs and good records are to lifting.

Yessiree bob. Critical in my opinion.

One thing for me push is the confidence it gives me. I might try 600 if i kick the cold I just got today, if not I’ll go in two weeks. My son didn’t get to see my last three prs and I know he’d like to be there when it happens.
When you hit 365 x 5 for five rep pr and then you do 415 next week, it’s a good bet you’re going to get 465 when you do 415 x 5.At least you know you’re in the ball park.
