Its ironic how Oregon has this reputation for being some hyper-progressive Utopia, but people ignore the racism and forget that not too long ago, it was a whites only state and many regions were white only by design even afer integration. Non-POC, especially those who havent been here, wouldnt get it.

Either way, lots of elderly individuals tend to harbour racist ideology, in part due to how they were raised… and these elderly people are certain they KNOW better as they’ve lived longer, more eventful (this is debatable) lives… however what they don’t realise is that toxic tradition and engrained ideology isn’t an example of knowing better, it’s an example of historical mistakes that need to be corrected…
My grandmother is highly racist towards immigrants and somewhat towards people of colour… which is funny because she has been an immigrant since age twelve… but she’s white… so I guess that’s okay then… what bullshit
I’m Caucasian, however probably the darkest Caucasian you’ve ever seen (genetic profile was a good portion ashkanazi and Sephardic Jew, 6 percent North African and part Moroccan I believe
I’ve posted this before, just to gauge what I mean when I say my colouring is darker than most Caucasian men (and I don’t tan or anything like that)… my other close family members are incredibly pale aside from my father who has a somewhat distinctive tan… but nothing like what I have. My phone camera is currently broken, so can’t take pictures anymore

As to fights, I had a trensformer (extremely geared up dude) start with me over a machine that I hopped on with the discretion of another gym goer, as he hadn’t been at the machine for a solid 25 mins but left his water bottle at the machine. So I get on, just as I start banging out some reps he comes up to me “THATS MY FUCKING MACHINE blablabla, gets all aggro. Now… I do know how to defend myself as I’ve specified before. A lifetime of being picked on, seven years of martial arts and a year of boxing will teach you to throw a decent punch if required… however the potential consequences (someone getting hurt, me accidentally killing the guy or vice verca… me getting banned from gym etc) aren’t worth it. So I say “alright, sorry bro” to which he grunted/gave some dickhead response and kept being aggressive, at which point the guy who said it was okay for me to use the machine (big guy, like 6’6, lean and muscular) actually comes over and stands up for me, berating the guy for being a douche, and the guy is like “I own this gym… it’s mine blablabla” and the tall guy is shooting back “no you fucking don’t, no one owns this place aside from the manager” (keep in mind this was like 6 months ago so details are a bit blurry here). And I’m trying to deescalate the decision “guys it’s fine, look I’ll use this machine… it really doesn’t matter”. But this doesn’t work and they keep arguing… until they reached a compromise, shook hands and laughed it off. Later the dude comes up to me and apologises for his behaviour, to which I’m like “it’s alright bro, don’t worry about it”

I’m just confused on why you thought the woman was being racist. From the back you don’t look very ‘people of color’ to me.
That’s like me being quick to assume someone is treating me a particular way as if they were being racist towards me because they thought I was a muslim terrorist simply because I have a beard.

They weren’t too keen on native inhabitants, either. Nor Asians (burned down the Chinatowns), nor Jews/Italians/other swarthy types we call “white” now.
I know a Umatilla (Oregon tribe) girl (OK, I dated her) from a Native American Leadership thing I went to in high school. They’ve been in lawsuits to reclaim land that was (pretty recently) just taken by the State of Oregon for decades. They’ve won repeatedly, but the supposedly “progressive” Oregon government kept trying to seize the land from the tribe for non-payment of state taxes – despite the taxes being illegal under federal law. The real truth is that various politicos had land deals they wanted to make the money off of.
Anyway, I am not surprised the overtly racists transformed themselves into so-called “progressives”. It’s just the same racist bullshit packaged into liberal talking points.

Well, I’m not white. Hair, skin, and all, you look white from the back.
Not sure how the face is relevant to skin color. If you go to Africa (which I have, repeatedly, to bring “peace”), you will find in the N/2 of the continent, most Africans have Caucasoid facial features and black skin, especially Ethiopia. They look like Norwegians that are dyed ink black.
I believe we have stumbled into an even less culturally sensitive “no true Scotsman” here

Usually the fears we have inside, insecurities etc manifest themselves like that, we interpret attitudes of others based on them,our own assumptions, so we think that others are aggressive towards us cause we come from this/that place when many times the other don’t give so much attention to us…
I’m not saying this particularly for the guy, just leaving this here🤣

In addition, If sb ever tried to make me feel like a victim of racism cause of it, I wouldn’t buy it, neither feel sad/upset etc it would be funny to me…

Societal attitude towards immigrants/differing ethnicities beyond Caucasian was toxic as a whole back then, and yes… superstitions are part of that toxic tradition
It’s like attitudes towards cannabis… look at how older generations perceive the devils lettuce while my generation typically views it as a lesser than alcohol type substance of abuse

Old lady at the gym today was just sitting in a machine. This thread came to mind… I almost told that old B$@&# to hurry up and get to work. Just for you, I didn’t though. But I wanted too 
Also, this old lady was super cool. Had to be 65+ and she was squatting! Granted it was on a smith machine, but hittin depth every time!

As Jewbacca said, it’s probably safer to assume a person is just an asshole if there is no direct evidence of racial/gender/religious ideology behind the actions.
I can be a total asshat to a black Jewish lady, and not be racist, sexist, or anti-Semitic. I’m just an asshole.
But, then again, only the people involved experienced all the subtleties and nuance of the situation to decide if there was anything beyond asshattery going on.

It seems to me that people underestimate how many white people are just straight up assholes and instead pull out the race card. That sort of thing trivializes actual racist behaviour.

I can’t help it, I’m a self-hating white asshole.
I’m not disputing that, it’s just that some people think that whenever a white person behaves like an asshole it’s because they are racist, rather than just being a regular asshole.
