FFB Calves

The thing is, not everyone is in your happy position.

For example my calves have years of seriously dedicated training, giving plenty of time and effort to each of very many different approaches, and they are still shit.

There are many out there whose calves have stalled regardless of lots of hard work that is intelligently done.

For such, it’s an interesting matter that you don’t see truly crappy calves on formerly fat people.

My suspicion is that a weight pack approach would require really pretty substantial weight – more than you used. As example guesses for a fairly average-sized guy: for running, say 65 lb; for walking, say 90.[/quote]

I agree that you don’t see many formerly fat people with bad calves. In fact, alot of times you can tell which women used to be fat by their disproportionally large calves.

I weigh my pack before I hit the trail and never pack more than 40lbs. But even if you go with 60 lbs or more I think you’d have to do it on a daily basis like fat guys or people in the military to see a good improvement. If you’re not fat or in the military I just think it’s impractical to do it often enough to see improvement.

I agree, except for those that can put in a couple of hours a day (I am guessing as a minimum) of walking around with it. Though much less might well do if running with a heavy pack. Which I know I wouldn’t want to do

On the original idea of hoping to wear a weight vest under a sweater, as a personal guess I would predict that to fail, as it would not be practical to load up with enough weight.

uphill farmers walks sounds like a good idea after reading those posts

my dad has 18.5 inch claves…while i am at 16.5 :)…

Good suggestion Al (Uphill Farmer’s Walks), maybe I’ll try that sometime

I have 18" calves and i dont do work for them and theyre not fat because i have stirations on them but then again i used to be a fatass haha

Anyone here who has had trouble building their calves ever try taking the stretch reflex out by waiting a few seconds at the bottom of each calf-raise rep?

I’ve tried it before, but never long enough to see results, or to say it didn’t work. I do know that I had to use quite a bit less weight, so maybe a mix of the two methods so you’re not neglecting heavy weight on them.

What about building up the anterior portion of the calves? I’ve got a pretty solid slab of meat on the medial portion, but my anterior is crappy. I’ve tried different foot placement and whatnot but all to no avail.

My buddy is pretty fat and has massive calves, no definition at all though, so their probably fatty. I was always pretty skinny, my right calf is 16 inches and my left is 15. I’ve never really trained them much though, 5 years of pushing myself around on a skateboard is all the calf work I’ve ever really done.

Thats a great one, although farmer walking down the hill works better because of the eccentric stress that is caused by trying to stop/slow yourself.

I believe Dante from DoggCrapp has a incline treadmill routine he uses for calf hypertrohpy.
