It simply means “eating less calories than your body burns”.

I’m just amazed at the lack of food education out there. The other day, I was offered dried fruit at work because it was “healthy.” So I had a few pieces, then read the back of the bag. What part of sugar, dried cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and maltodextrin is healthy? They think that anything from a natural food store is healthy. It’s just astonishing. So I stopped eating them and had to explain why they were not healthy. These are grown adults raising children mind you.

And once I start explaining why things like this are not healthy, I get called a “hippie tree hugger” because they are all a bunch of ignorant assholes too lazy to actually learn something new.

You’re just like me…about 18 months ago, haha.

And just like my GF is today.

I still feel that way, of course, but it’s just not worth the trouble of speaking to others about it. Live and let live, I guess. Just learn to politely decline. No need for explanations.
I used to get similar situations, I’ve found that just letting people know I “don’t eat that” is enough, but then I’m the boss so I rarely get called a tree hugging hippy. I also find that explanations will always make the situation worse, either because they will feel the need to ask advice they have no intention of following or, even worse, I’ll get the “why do you need to diet, you look OK how you are”, which is one of my least favourite sentences in the english language.

a) Who says I want to look “OK”, is that the highest we can aim for now?
b) Do you not think that maybe I look “OK” because I eat like this?
c) Why do you think it’s ok to comment on my diet when I’m not allowed to comment on yours?
Those three things you mentioned are so on point. I get that all the time. “Why are you on a diet? You’re not fat.” Oh really? Then what is this?! And then I proceed to pull on my love handles that are made out of FAT. I wasn’t saying I was obese. And also, may not be fat but am I muscular?

And yes, I’m in shape now because of how I eat. Not because of how I ate before. People comment on my eating healthy so much. Granted sometimes it’s in a good way like “I wish I could eat healthy like you.” Even though they can. They act like I have some special power. But most of the time, I just want to tell them how bad it is for you to eat an ENTIRE PIZZA for lunch 3-4 times a week. But I don’t. Because that should be common sense. And then they complain about diabetes in their family and it being genetic and non-preventable. Okay maybe in some cases. But eating healthy does more for you than make you look good naked.

I couldn’t find the thread in which you guys’ were referencing lol. I will google caloric deficit.
There’s a thread in the beginners section right now by a kid called a2z or something similar, worth a read if you want to raise your blood pressure. You might even find your name mentioned.
Well, I’m subbing Study Hall today so I have nothing to do but read threads on T-Nation. Will check it out haha.

bodyweight in pounds x12 is usually a good starting point.

So, around 2,000. Now to calculate how many calories I actually eat. Any advice for this? Or just do it and quit complaining about how tedious it is? I guess if I am eating cleaning/making my own meals, looking up the amount of calories in chicken or rice can’t be that hard. Problem is, I don’t really measure my food. I don’t have a food scale. I usually use 1/3 or 1/4 of a cup for rice. I measure oatmeal. Peanut butter is always just eye balling what I assume is 2 TBSP.

Buy a food scale asap. It’ll be useful for the rest of your life and it’s cheap.

I can grab one at work. Can’t wait for the obsessive comments when measuring my food from my parents.

Don’t let them see you

There are also a few things you can eyeball. An ounce of meat is about as big as a deck of cards. One cup of rice is 200 grams. Same for oats. A single egg has 95 kcal. And so on and so on.

Measuring is important. To some extent you are better with the right number of calories eating less than healthy food(not junk food) than eating perfect but going way over your calorie target.

I think C actually irritates me the most. I can live with A and B, although they’re annoying. Again, excluding discussions in forums like this one where the entire goal is discussion of such things, I just prefer to avoid the conversation about diet and nutrition as much as possible because it will annoy me more than anything.

I shall measure!!

Here’s my workout from yesterday (I skipped a leg/full body exercise because I planned on doing The Incline today (it’s a thing look it up) which would have been more than a leg/full body exercise but I got called in to sub today and then I also work at night so no time for gym):

Decline chest press (on cables)
10lbs x 10
14lbs 3x8 (the weights on this machine were really weird and hand written. I’m assuming 14lbs each side with resistance)

Incline db press
25lbs 3x10

Db row
25lbs 3x10

Planks
2x 1 min

Post workout: Surge Recovery (1 1/2 scoops)

Ditto.

I now don’t even talk diet with the missus, she’s accepted that I eat what I eat and that’s just how it works.

I find myfitnesspal is perfect for this. At the start it’s a pain and you never imagine you’ll keep it up but it works so well it works. My one tip for this is plan your meals roughly the day before, not at the end of the day. It makes it so much easier to control.

Okay I will check it out. I need to anyways because the company I am making a video for is using my fitness pal for their app I think. Or something like that. I’m pretty sure I used to track my food with my fitness pal but it was really hard because I ate out so much! Hard to track that stuff when you don’t know what you’re eating.

mate, one of the best things about working in a gym is people don’t say stupid fucking shit about your healthy lunches.

Fat people in cafeterias trying to explain to me why I shouldn’t bother eating chiken and broccoli at lunch was always a massive bugbear of mine.

It’s not like you can point out how fat they are in your defence, so you just have to smile and nod.

I’m not a fan of your oatmeal and peanut butter breakfasts.

Where’s the protein? I’d have a protein only breakfast if I were you.
