Feels Like a Jimi Day

As always, wear kick ass headphones. Really loud.

Yeah! I have been on a Jimi trip revisited from my formative years… I just read his book, fascinating and sad.

For me, no one came close to Jimi at his time. Every single player has some Hendrix in their style.
His own style was violent yet subtle when he sees it… I can go on and on, but thanks for sharing this… the bet!

“just ask the Axis, he knows everything”

Nice thread! Here is my contribution.

Always loved Hendrix.

May I go slightly off-topic to say that Clapton sucks?

lol

Great song, OP.

Here are three songs I always felt deserved more attention:

And there was a great cover of that last song by a combination of some members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam [not Temple of the Dog, though-I think they were called MACC].

Why so? I always though he was a pretty good guitarist, and one of rocks best.

Not arguing, as from past posts I know you definitely know more than me about this stuff.

Hands down greatest and most influential guitarist of all time. Here’s some of my favorites-

My dad had saved a bunch of old music mags and newspaper articles from his youth. One of the articles was an interview with Clapton. At one point during the interview the interviewer asked Clapton what it was like to be on Hendrix level, to which Clapton replied “You can’t compare the two of us. I’m not in Jimi’s league.” or something to tht effect. Always thought that was really cool.

Clapton was always a very modest guitarist. He has been quoted several times on the topic but a lot of recent interviews he always said Buddy Guy is the best guitarist, IHO.

Hendrix was absolutely phenomenal, what he did with the guitar can probably never be replicated again. It is not possible to pick a best guitarist but most innovative, Jimi hands down.

Jimi was great because he made sure his guitar virtuosity was a part of his overasll aesthetic- his showmanship really wasn’t just showmanship.

I think a lot of the ‘virtuoso’ guitarists that followed did not do this and thus weren’t very good.

No, LD. It’s just my opinion. Clapton never “moved” me like some. I find that I’m attracted to guitarists who’ve balanced great virtuosity, powerful riff-writing, ability to innovate, and soulful performance. Hendrix had all four. Clapton only the first. Someone like Jimmy Page mostly the second.
I think one who most closely resembles Hendrix in 3 of the 4 departments was Stevie Ray Vaughan.
But of course this is only my opinion.

I see. I guess we have different standards for what makes a good guitarist [although I don’t play guitar, so that plays into this all].

Completely agree on Jimmy Page and SRV, though. Page, and SRV were one of the few guitarists that followed Hendrix and made sure that they were sound over notes, aesthetic over showmanship, guitarists, going back to my earlier post about post-Hendrix ‘guitar gods’. Although both had their times where they let showmanship get the best of them [“Since I’ve Been Loving You”, parts of the otherwise amazing “Texas Flood”, etc.], for the most part they were really good.

^I don’t really know much in the way of making music, so the terms I used are personal and probably weird. Sorry if it makes very little sense, or if I look like a charlatan :D.

And since it’s marginally related:

Something new for y’all…enjoy!
