It doesn’t matter, the NBA is seen as a black sport and hockey a white one.
Brandon Jacobs attempted to punch D’angelo Hall in the ‘face’. Then Haynesworth took a swipe at Jacobs. Only Haynesworth got a penalty. It’s because the ref is a racist right?
Your point is stupid, and further proves drewh’s. The difference is there is a sense that blacks can’t controls themselves so the sport as a whole needs to be controlled and coonery needs to be eliminated. The Commissioner has a week long press conference if there’s a fight in a sport where people are SUPPOSED to hit each other. Yet in hockey it’s cool to get into a fight.

When is the last time they made a dress code for hockey players?
They basically said all nba player’s are children who dress like the young black youth and scare white business man, so now they HAVE to wear suits.

As far as Bret Farve goes all I can remember is farve mania the last 2 summers. Maybe i’m biased because I only watch sports channels but it seemed like it was more than tiger woods and vick combined so whatever analyst that said that sounds kind of dumb. Still doesn’t mean there isn’t a racist attitude towards “black” sports.
Football players are suposed to tackle each other not punch each other in the helmets (a stroke of genius btw). Fighting is penalized. Guess what fighting is penalized in hockey too. 5 minutes in the penalty box for the involved parties. Fighting is allowed and regulated in hockey. It puts asses in the seats in a sport with a dwindling fan base.
oh shit 5 minutes in the penalty box, and #9 on top play list, what a way to penalize someone for fighting I’m sure they would rather pay a $10000-$50000 fine.
In case you can’t see the similarities between fighting and aggression let me spell it out for you. Football is a sport that teaches aggressiveness. Your supposed to tackle the other person with everything you got, when you have a situation like this over and over for 3+ hours there is going to be tension. People will argue and fight, but then you want to penalize them more than just a flag because he took it just a little farther? GTFO
This is a completely retarded argument and I can’t believe anyone is taking this serious.

Black men on Wall street have to wear suits to work. I bet a few of them would love to wear their sweet George Gervin Mitchell and Ness jersey with matching fitted but they do what their employer tells them. It’s as simple as that. David Stern didn’t want the bench to look like the “crack spot” so he implemented a dress code.
Damn how da fuck do you argue against something and prove it in the same sentence. So you think it looks like the “crack spot”? What they wore were normal every day casual wear for the average black american. baggy jeans and a t-shirt, sometimes throwback jerseys. When they wore every day casual white people clothes their dress code wasn’t a problem. How come a black person’s clothes looks like the crack spot? So whenever you see groups of black people in baggy jeans and T-shirts it’s the crack spot and you can’t possibly see why this is racist? Real fucking brilliant.
How many players complained about that again? Oh wait, the majority supported it. Hockey players that are only the “healthy inactive” list don’t even sit on the bench. They don’t even show up to the arena. Make a relevant point if you are going to argue, please.

As far as public perception goes. Paul Tagliabue is not the reason Ray Lewis was on trial for murder. Roger Goodell wasn’t involved when Mike Vick paid people to run his kennel. Stern didn’t force Artest to throw haymakers at a guy holding a soda/beer. Stephen Jackson, enough said. These are all individuals that have brought shame to their teams. Boo hoo. This group happens to be black. There are plenty of white and latino athletes that have done the same.
You just can’t remember their names at the moment … I wonder why???
Thank you for proving my point, yet again…
When a white athlete does something wrong that person is an idiot, when a black athlete does it they’re the devil reincarnate. A shame to whole sport and race of people not just themselves.
Pete Rose was banned from baseball and the hall of fame for gambling after he retired. I’d use that as an example as a white guy getting punished for doing stupid shit.

Jimmy the greek lost his job for some dumb ignorant statements. Michael Irving didn’t for similar stupid comments.

John Rocker was suspended without pay for the 1st 14 games without pay in the 2000 season for making offensive comments about minorities and immigrants.

So yeah, I’d say white people in sports are being held accountable for doing stupid shit. There may not be as many getting in trouble in the NBA, but keep in mind only 1 of 5 NBA players is white so there’s less of them out there to fuck up.

I think the best comparison for Brett Favre’s situation is a black athlete: Shaq. Shaq has pulled some similar stunts in terms of being a shitty teammate or backstabbing guys, demanding trades, etc. However, he plays the enormous jolly giant card and he’s a funny and interesting dude, so he gets a pass while a guy like Iverson (who, say what you want about his attitudes toward practice, killed himself for 48 minutes a game while he was in Philly) got raked over the coals constantly.

I don’t think Favre necessarily gets a pass because he’s white, but because he’s white AND rocks a sweet 2-day stubble and wears Wrangler jeans and harvests his own crops or whatever other dumb shit people like about him. My point is that the Brett Favre as a person is very appealing to the average (read: middle class whitey) sports fan. I think most 40-50 year old white guys (which would the demographic group that makes up the majority of the media who covers Brett Favre) have this image in their head of what they would do, what they would be like and how they would act if they were professional football players. I think that image happens to look a lot like Brett Favre.

To think of a a football example, take a guy like Jeff George. The dude was an asshole and thus got constantly flamed by the media. Favre has pulled some similar stunts but:

(a) He cultivates that “middle America” public persona
(b) He’s really fucking good.

I think this is a good point and something that has always interested me in these discussions. I think a lot of people see anything a black person does as representing black people as a whole. Good or bad. And honestly though, I don’t think it’s just white people extending this line of logic, although they are the more frequent offenders. For example, take the recent Presidential election. To many, Obama represents the achievement of black people as a whole. On the other hand, nobody thinks that Joe Biden represents white people as a whole. You get the flip side to: a black person doing something bad draws negative attention on black people as a whole. A white person doing something bad is (usually) just viewed as a singular idiot.

Excuse me while I ask my black friend how black people feel about that subject.
Gettnitdone wrote:
Haha Bonez don’t fight ignorance with ignorance.

On a separate note like counting beans said in the first initial reply there is a racial double standard in America. And that double standard is histrionically and culturally justified in a sense. Black America went through so much turmoil in the last 100 years of American history. Even though some of the punks out there may have not experienced any sort of racism towards them and their race they know the historical context of race conflict, primary black and white. You can’t honestly say that racism towards whites by blacks is greater than racism by whites to blacks simply because white Americans are still a vast majority.

On top of that the ESPN reporter whoever it was is not racist or anywhere near it. He is allowed to make such a statement if hes giving his personal opinion (not whilst acting as a journalist) especially under the circumstances that Rush Limbaugh made similar comments previously. Its obvious Rush Limbaugh would get more coverage because hes a bigger personality and some of his listeners are actual racist rednecks who call Obama a ‘Muslim.’ Calling your own President a Muslim, a derogatory remark insinuating he is not a ‘real American president’ whatever that means is doing a disservice to your own country and all your peoples.
I’m proud of great people that are presidents, a person isn’t great and shouldn’t be held proud-fully by people because he is president however. I know you may just love the Queen of England, but I however am not in love with the position of President of the United States.

Drew your point is one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my life.

30-40 years ago the NBA was mostly white. Fighting was not allowed then either.

Perhaps a good example would be, if back in the day, they could fight in major league baseball, but not in the ‘Negro leage’. If that was the case, I could see a point. But its not.

This argument has hit a new level of retarded. I can’t beleive this.

Crack spot was in quotes for a reason. When whitebread middle america (read: people who grow up never seeing black people in person in their lives) see the NBA they automatically relate the men they see to other highly visible black men. The most visible being rappers. Stern wanted to put as much distance between the NBA and the hip hop image as possible. To the best of my knowledge the majority of rappers don’t wear suits and/or sweaters and button downs while pouring oil the ‘bitches’ sitting on top of their '69 DeVilles. If I see white guys wearing du rags and baggy jeans with 6 inches of extra material rolled over their timberalnd boots I’d also assume that they want to be or have been involved with the image of hip hop culture. That’s how “DA” fuck I argue it.

And your last paragraph is not a response nor has anything to do with my quoted words. It’s simply your opinion on the topic, an opinion I don’t agree with. I specifically said “shame to their team” and NOT shame to an entire race. No single person is capable of shaming an entire race of people. Your individual perception of this issue renders you incapable of having an relevant, unbiased argument. That much is obvious.

So now I guess your argument is that there are social differences between the different races. Again, I agree. I guess I misunderstood you. I thought you were arguing that black athletes were being persecuted because of their race, not that there are different cultural norms amongst different groups.

If there is no malice involved and the man who makes the rules implements a certain rule that pertains to EVERY SINGLE PERSON employed by the league what’s the problem again?

And I never said that there is no racism in sports. You continue to twist words to fit your (nonexistent?) argument. That doesn’t work out so well for someone trying to argue a subjective point.

You say it didn’t show “all out racism.” I agree. It didn’t show ANY racism. There is a difference between a clearly racist statement and a pure hate speech. Black comedians DO say things that are clearly racist against whites. The reverse is also true.
