One thing that still bothers me about the Super Tecmo Bowl is that sometimes the game cheated. One example I remember was when I was about to win the Super Bowl after taking a mediocre team all the way through the season and playoffs.

I had the lead and the ball deep in the opponent’s territory with just a couple of seconds left. Since there was no kneel-down, I handed off only to have him get crushed right away and fumble the ball, which bounced around and was scooped up by a defender who somehow had a 30 yard lead on anyone else.

At the same time, my RB, who was my controlled player, was still down from his crushing. As soon as he got up, he was engaged and couldn’t break free. Bottom line is that the computer scored easily and kicked the extra point and beat me by 1. There were other crazy finishes like that but that is the one that, almost 20 years later, still stands out in my head.

i think the tecmo’s were the best, first sports game with solid gameplay and real players… everyone my age is all about them

I cannot believe no one mentioned SNK Baseball Stars. That is still the best basement console game I have ever played. For its time, it was ridiculous since you could customize the players on your teams AND it kept track of stacks.

Also, the players looked like baseball players as opposed to the smushed little dwarves from RBI Baseball. I will throw the gauntlet down right here, right now… RBI Baseball is not even in the same league (awful pun fully intended) as SNK Baseball Stars.

Sega Genesis Columns ftw. I never lost to any human playing that game, ever. I also beat it (pretty dang hard) 10 times or so.

Donkey Kong Country

NARC was pretty fun. I remember blowing up dogs and drug dealers with a missile launcher.

But Tecmo Super Bowl pwns everything.

TSB was pretty sweet, though I generally preferred killing games over sports. TSB was the exception. Bo Jackson was just dang crazy, especially when computer controlled, that made him about 2x faster.

Did anybody ever beat any of the following:

Sophomore year of college I can remember a bunch of us trading off playing for… damn… 8? 10? 12? hours? We did end up beating it… I think. It’s so blurry now.

Ghost n Goblins was a tough ass game.

Super Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Zelda: Link to the past
Chrono Trigger
FFII and III
Super Punch Out
Secret of Mana

I play more old school games on my laptop than new titles. New games suck. Emulators rule.

Ninja Gaiden was so good. Got so far once when I was a kid.

I finished it 20 years later… downloaded the game on my Wii console. You do have continues for this game but they are limited.

Another game that was so good and incredibly hard was Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the SNES…

agreed

Bump cause it was linked in another thread and I’d rather add to this one, love a lot of the games listed gonna try to add non-repeats

Battle of Olympus: really fun sidescrolling adventure/rpg style game.
Monster Party: probably harder than Ninja Gaiden/GnG/etc, but having passwords that let you restart on levels make it more beatable I guess(if you know what I mean).
Crystalis: seriously one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played and this game is fucking ancient.
Yo Noid: game was so fun, I think the main character is the old Dominoes mascot?
Adventure Island: another really really tough sidescroller, but still so fun.

I know Blaster Master was already mentioned, but I would seriously put that up as the hardest game EVER, more than Ninja Gaiden, Super GnG, anything. I’ve never met a human being who beat that game without using save states on an emulator, ever. In fact I only know of a few people who can even beat the 5th boss(out of 8) without using the pause trick.

I’m gonna put my SNES picks in that other thread, because my post count will love me for it =p
