Alright Kahuna, here’s another one for you.
“…I don’t want to die.”
“Neither do I, baby, but if I have to, I’m gonna die last.”
Alright Kahuna, here’s another one for you.
“…I don’t want to die.”
“Neither do I, baby, but if I have to, I’m gonna die last.”
And another for you, Kahuna.
“Okay, how much did they give you? I’ll top it.”
“You can’t top this. They said they’d let me breathe.”
And a third one for you to chew on, Kahuna. If you know all three of these at the tender young age of 19, well…you need to quit watching movies and go out and get laid!
“So, money doesn’t interest you. Are you independently wealthy?”
“I’m independent.”
“Of money?”

I would have easily missed this one if I hadn’t had a Kirk Douglas marathon a few months back. Also, Robert Mitchum was underrated as shit, I can’t believe I’d not heard much about him outside of the occasional circle.

Kiss Me Deadly! That’s the only one so far apart from the In A Lonely Place and Key Largo quotes that I didn’t have to spend too long thinking about, stuck in my brain for some reason that one.

The Lady From Shanghai. What’s an interest in film worth if it doesn’t include some viewings of Orson Welles? I’m rather lucky I got this one too, I wouldn’t have known this, nor the Mitchum quote at the start of the year. I’d recognise it, but to pick out the exact film would have been beyond me without refreshing myself on his filmography every now and then.
Speaking of which, I work at a new place and the chef has never seen a Stanley Kubrick film before. I wanted to drop him in on A Clockwork Orange, but decided to leave it off for later because of the “broken” English dialect moved over from the novel (he’s German). Left him with The Shining to get himself acquainted.
There’s a really fucking sweet thing at that new place that took me by surprise, I’ll have to take a photo of it and post it up though, but it’s too damn good for me to have just come across by coincidence. I’ll get one tonight and throw it up in some thread somewhere, maybe put it as my avatar too.

If there’s one scene in Dirty Harry that they should have taken out to keep the whole thing professional, it’s these five seconds right here:

Because I can’t watch that film one time without laughing at how hilarious that facial expression and scream is. I appreciate that it’s there, because I love unintentionally hilarious movie scenes, but jesus christ, in Dirty Harry?
I can’t believe they let that take come out in the final cut, it’s too much for me to not just bawl out in laughter.

Okay, yes I totally agree. But I think the school bus scene outdoes this one. “Row Row Row your boat!!! All your mothers are gonna die if you don’t start singing!!!”
My buddy and I used to work together in retail and when bratty little kids got on our nerves we would look at each other and mouth “Row, Row, Row…”.
One of the reasons for my love of DH is the antics of Scorpio. I mentioned him in the best villains thread.

Yeah, I really enjoy Scorpio as the kind of slithering coward and psychopath, plays off well with the coolness of Eastwood. Can get a little overbearing when films repeat that formula over and over again, but nonetheless I like it.

I agree. I also think the later Dirty Harry movies never had a memorable villain again like Scorpio. “Magnum Force” was good, but after that it was all about Harry, his sidekick(s) and nothing else.

Oh yeah, that series was dead in the water by Sudden Impact, if not The Enforcer. I liked Magnum Force somewhat, but of course it is no Dirty Harry.

Kingpin.
Hey Kahuna, you ever thought about film school? Instead of watching what must be an average of about two films a day since you were 15, based on how many movies you seem to have seen, why don’t you make them instead? The movie world could use someone with a passion for them like what you have.

Doesn’t matter how big he was, still underrated! Haha.
I too adore Mitchum, might have a flick through sooner or later. But for now I’m planning to finish up on my Westerns and then maybe take a jab at silent 20’s era films.

I have, but my funds are too low to go to one particularly worthwhile right now, once the military sets me up with a fair backlog of savings, I’ve been thinking about going to film school and maybe making a few short films to get me on my way. I still have a long way to go when it comes to actually making a film myself, from writing the script and especially handling the cinematography and camera locations + editing processes.
I’m sure somewhere down the line I’ll find myself in a position to toil over something worthy, then put it out and hope for exposure. I just hope the film market doesn’t drag it’s lines even further into wishy-washy CGI filled dredge for blockbusters and all the more artistic and meaningful films relegated to a relatively niche audience.
I’d rather make something incredible and die poor and hungry than sell out for the ignorant masses and the people that claw at their wasted money. Might be an issue for me in the future, spending so long on a single project and missing my windows.
And you’re right, I think it does indeed even out to two a day, one upon waking and one before sleeping. I still have a long way to go, might even come out to forty years old and still have the nagging knowing that I’m missing some huge gap of films I should have seen from the past.
