Also voting on DL vid from the side! And not only because I want to lasciviously oogle your strong posterior chain from a different POV (yes!), but because, well damn! - you’re killing the DLs!
I can’t wait to pull sumo again, and I may as well learn from an expert
And no worries - you’ll get that 305 next time! You gotta get back into your zone, girl. Can’t expect magic to happen every time.
When’s the meet again? I know it’s not best to change things up too close to a meet, but maybe try bringing your grip in a tad as well. Your arms aren’t straight down, they’re out a little (probably so that at lockout, you had your hands outside of your hips for comfort reasons) but too wide a grip will cause your upper back to work a little harder than it has to. Just a thought, but next session move each hand in 2-3 inches (or 5-7.5cm’s).
LWI
And yeah, don’t sweat a missed lift. Happens all the time, which makes it that much more satisfying when you do nail it
no fear frenchie fantastique. you already have that three fifteen, I KNOW YOU DO!!! timing might not be right and ANY vacation wears me out too.
come meet day if you get it then great, but I have absolutely no doubt you have it just waiting to come out. Don’'t forget killer bench! and your new sq! you got this!!
i myself have a frozen dl :{ but we’ll both get it!!
Maschy - expert? hellz no. but thank you. An expert would be Ouro.
Ink - meet is next weekend, the 30th. I tried bringing my hands in but the gnarliness of the bar ends where my hands are. I tried holding the smooth end once to bring my hands in and I had no grip at all.
Played with my numbers again last night. Only a few workouts left to tweak it all. Tonight is my last squat session.
Spent a couple hours analyzing my numbers last night, where I’m at now, how I performed last meet and what I would like to accomplish in order to fine tune my last week of training.
Took a couple minutes more to warm up this evening as someone was already in the rack. It probably helped quite a bit after the strain on my posterior chain from the deadlifts on tuesday.
Warmup
foam roll
hams and calves stretch
retard frog x5
prayer squat - really trying to find comfort in the pose to stretch the hips. Hold for a 15-20 seconds x4
shoulder dislocates x12
bodyweight squats 2x15
Then down to business
Squats
bar x5
115 x5 (skipped the 95lbs)
135 x3
155 x3
175 x2
195 x2
210 x3 Rep Pr +2! This is my planned opener for the meet. My 3rd attempt was 198 in June so really happy with my improvements.
and because I felt really good about my ramp up tonight…
225 x1 - I lost my balance setting up. So I decided to go for seconds
225 x2 - Rep Pr +1. oh yeeeaaah! Actually tried for a triple but my right hip flexor jammed on me and I had to drop the bar. I’m sure the whole gym jumped. lol
Great way to end my last squat session. My attempts for these will be 210, 225 and 235 for an all time PR.
I’m about to hit 195 when a guy I’ve never seen around my gym asks how many sets I have left. I tell him quite a few, but I’m also ramping PL style (5-10 minute break between sets) so he can def work in. I figure the good karma will come back my way (we only have 1 rack at my gym). The guy proceeds to wait for it… deadlift! I let him finish and then I very politely tell him that he can grab an empty bar and do those in any corner of the gym. The squat should be left for those squating or pressing. To his credit he took it very well, but I didn’t see him set up anywhere. C’est la vie.
On a more positive note after dumping my 3rd attempt at 225 another guy setting up in the smith machine next to me gave me eye contact to see if I was okay. I smiled and said no harm done. He took the opening and mentionned that he’d never seen a woman squat that much before (I work out at the french equivalent of a Goodlife gym). We chatted for a few minutes and he asked me for some cues… I told him I was game but NOT in the squat rack. We did a couple of bodyweight squats to see how his knees were tracking and then he set up with 115lbs. I gave him a few pointers (chest up, look up, depth, placing the bar between shoulder blades ect…) He took to it very well. I believe I have saved someone from the smith machine tonight
That is cool that the guy deadlifting took it well. He probably was looking for an excuse to chat to you!
I’m not sure how I feel about people doing other stuff… I guess if there isn’t anybody wanting to use it for squats then no harm done… But on the other hand I kind of feel like you shouldn’t have to move people along out of the squat rack when they don’t need the rack. They shouldn’t be in there in the first place. Guess different people have different ideas on the appropriate etiquette there. Glad to hear you saved someone from the smith machine!
First of all, the progress in your squat weight is nothing short of amazing to me. I can’t imagine upping my max that much. Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it. If you can triple 210, it’s probably the perfect opener in my book. Is that with wraps?
I agree with Ink about the DL grip issue. If you drop your hands straight down, are they really contacting the smooth section of the bar? I sort of am, but widen to have the knurling. Seems like my shoulders are way narrower than yours.
And to address Ronda’s statement about the second DL rep looking easier . . . that’s because it is. Because DL has no eccentric portion (and hence no stretch reflex), the second rep is often easier than the first with touch-and-go. I just finished reading a book on DL and it explained the challenge of pulling from a static position and why some kind of “wind up” (a dip, taking the slack outta the bar, etc.) is necessary to break heavy weight off the floor.
Best of luck to you on the 30th. I will certainly check in to see your successful meet results.
That is awesome that you taught a guy how to squat. I am impressed that he was willing to take advice from you. Most men don’t want to take advice from anyone, let alone a woman.
Cool story Frenchie! Helping a fellow lifter who is eager to learns always a great feeling
Your meet is going to be a smoke show. What were your numbers from your last meet vs what your planning for this one? Im the noob and you’re the vet but I had a question…
Why are you going for 225 as your second attempt when you almost hit that for a triple today? Seems like you could get 230 for your second attempt (PR?) and then go for broke on your third since you know you can smash up 225? Just a thought from an admitted P@ newb-a-tron
Either way you’re going to rock. I’m pumped to see how you do. Give em hell Frenchie!

I upped my reps on my DL today and really saw what you mean here. Makes me feel like I will be able to grow my DL max very soon
