Fat, Bald, and D@%n Near 50

Hey J, enjoy your thread. You guys crack me up…my wife sometimes will read over my shoulder, and I usually get a comment like…no matter how old you get, your still little boys. My well thought out witty comeback would be- yea, so?

I grew up in NC but did a 15 yr walkabout out west. Lived 10 yrs in Idaho. I swear some of the summers out there half the state was on fire. Keep the smoke down east if ya can, I’ve breathed my share.

I got serious about lifting when I was 38, I’m now a month shy of 51. It’s part of me now. The biggest trick it to not let little injuries turn into big ones. One thing for sure, something is always going to hurt. Good luck with your training, your doing awesome.

Hang in there JW. Nature can sure be a bitch. Good you’ve planned ahead, though.

I used to work for the forest service as a smokechaser back in the 70’s That was down in southeastern nc. Those were some good times. Most of the time we spent sitting around the fire towers waiting for the tower operators to spot smoke. Every once in a while we would have a fire pop up and I would have to call in the plows or the tankers to put down a fire.

how times have changed Ironman. We don’t have any towers left on this end of the state.

The towers at this part of the state have been taken down also My mom used to work in one. Sometimes I wish I had stayed with it. I would probably be retired by now and looking for something else to do.

Sunday morning 5:45 a.m. Yes I’m a slacker I slept in this morning.

Changed the order of the workout some.

Dips: 14xBW
Bench Press: 135x5, 185x5, 205x5, 215x5, 220x5, 225x3
Incline Bench: 135x8, 155x6, 155x5
Close Grip Bench: 115x10, 135x10
Power Clean: 4x135x5
Standing Military Press/Bent Row Superset:
3x95x8
Leg Press Machine: 90x10, 180x10,270x10

I had to buy some new workout shoes. I am the proud owner of some Converse Chuck Taylor’s. I had my last pair when I was in the 8th grade I think.

I like the order of the workout. I’m thinking it is more of a natural progression. I’m not sure, so any input is appreciated. I guess the 225 bench press is a PR of sorts. The last time I did that was 1984 sometime. I’ll take it! If someone was in the gym and could of spotted me I would have tried 250. I had it in me.

Had a hair brained idea about super setting the mil presses and rows. I liked how it worked. I’ll keep doing that. Plus I have more in the tank to increase the weight on the superset.

Yes I didn’t feel like squatting today. I have caught a cold in June, dammit! Not one damn cold all winter and now I have a summer cold. I think it was the smoke Friday. Anyway I got a good leg work out. It felt pretty good, even if it was with the machine.

Well I’m off to fix the family Sunday breakfast. I have yeast rolls rising in the oven for them, some salted whipped cream, going to fry 8 eggs, make some grits, and fry some home smoked bacon I get from a local farmer. PLUS I have me a nice piece if andouille sausage from my stash I import from South Louisiana. Oh yes, I forgot about my coonass coffee the inlaws send me…

Hope y’all have a great Sunday!

I find that the order of my workout makes a difference in how I enjoy it and whether or not I’m making progress.

Glad you’ve got yours mixed up to one that works well for you.

Training is lookin’ good J! I’m the slacker around here - slept in until 8 after going to bed at 10. I do believe that my body is telling me something…

Sounds like a wonderful breakfast you’re whipping up there. Enjoy your Sunday!

40 minutes on a treadmill with a summer cold sucks! Trying to do it in intervals sucks more. I got it done, so I feel good about that.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…

Hope you’re feeling better!

Hey JW… good numbers, your certainly getting stronger!

When mother nature screws with me, I give it right back to her.

I go into the deep forest, stroke a nice cedar tree (foreplay)… pour some whiskey onto the ground (to get her drunk)… dig a little hole in the ground, and then I mount her and go to town… I screw her right back!

Hmmm… think I need help…

Yea man you do!! We just cut the bastard down and plant another right next to the stump…so the new tree will behave better.

That’s my approach to gardening!

Govenor has declared today Mountaineer Day, this guy is slow with all the bandwagons he climbs on.

Dip: 14xBW
Bench Press: 135x10, 185x5, 205x5, 225x5, 225x3
Incline Press: 135x8, 155x5, 155x3
Close Grip Tricep Press: 135x10, 155x8, 155x4
Power Clean: 2x135x5
Standing Press: 95x8, 115x5, 115x3
Bent Row: 95x8, 115x8, 115x8
Squat: 135x10, 205x10

Standing press and row were super sets. Guess I was not as strong as I thought!

I had all intentions of doing a light workout today. More of keeping the blood flowing kind of day, or an active deload, if you have something like that with a workout like mine. I mean I am only competing with myself, No clear goals other than to feel better and get stronger. Maybe that is what I am doing, working to be “ugly strong”.

Anyway I guess I didn’t achieve my goal. I pushed a little bit and ran out of gas about squat time.

I’m thinking about switching to a 4 day split type of workout, still strength based. Any ideas of a template?

I’m also looking into 4-day splits for the fall. Exrx.net has some options here: http://exrx.net/Lists/WorkoutMenu.html

Thanks Mr Dog! I had forgotten to look at this site.

I do love your avatar!

I think your instincts are right, Willy, that after the great progress you have made it is time for you to split and give your legs a couple of days at the top of the list. Maybe a main pressing day and a main pulling day with corresponding assistance work for each on the other day might work for you.

Thanks Geech, that is a very common sense approach. I hope to work a plan together and continue my quest to be ‘ugly strong’ yet extremely leaner!

“ugly strong”…I likes that!
Ok, my little bit of philosophy for the night. “…only competeing with myself.” Is there any other tougher competetion?

It’s early morning, you’re all alone in the gym. Don’t have to suck in the gut, look around before pulling your underwear out of the crack of your ass or scratching your balls. Might even hit that double bi pose in the mirror. Works a hassle, kid needs braces, world outside the door is waiting to dump shit on you. But the weights are at your feet and none of that crap matters. Your best friend or worst enemy is right there. You bend, you pull, you make the lift, a PR. No crowds applauding, no bystanders gawking, no medals, and the world is still right outside.

But you made the lift and you did it for you and you’ll always know it was just for you. For just a little while you were in total control of the universe. And you’ll be happy if just for a moment. Then the world comes flooding back in. Beating others in competition is satisfing but beating yourself is a whole harder and better thing to do.
'nuff philosophy. Keep lifting, you’re doing good.
