Farmer's Log 2

If you are likely to be in janner country let me know,if you need a workout while away i can sign you in to the gym as a guest if you fancy a session in plymouth.

Nice walking around abouts here both on’t moor and the coast path.

CK - Thanks for the compliment, but I’m not sure if my ability to keep form is a good or a bad thing. I think it holds me back a bit, especially on deadlifts. If I ever feel my form start to slide I instinctively shut it down and I don’t seem to be able to overide it. Not great when you’re attempting 1rms. I think I give up on reps too soon, not through lack of trying, just through fear of injury. I see lots of people locking out deadlifts with rounded backs and it doesn’t seem to do them any harm.

As for the RHR, 46 bpm is the lowest I’ve measured with a HR monitor. Most of the time (5 days a week) it’s higher than that (low fifties) because it’s raised post exercise, but if I have 2-3 days off in a row it gets that low.

Matty - Thanks mate. I’d decided to go heavier yesterday so I intentionally didn’t over exert myself beforehand.

We don’t know exactly where we are going yet, but thanks for the offer of a workout, I’ll bear it in mind if we’re down your way.

I have very little experience of that neck of the woods (Devon and Cornwall) 2 trips to Bude, 1 to Newquay, so any recommendations of nice places to visit, good walks, specific stretches of coastal path and historical places (I like a bit of history) would be greatly appreciated.

We haven’t decided on our route yet, so we can arrange it to take in particular places.

Thanks BN.

Bummer about the toenail. That happened to me years ago and it still looks weird even though it healed.

Amazing how you can take trips anywhere on your tiny little island. I’ve had to drive across entire states bigger than Britain. Exhausting.

And your squats make me so jealous.

Brett.
some ideas about the area :

Plymouth itself–you have just missed all the brouhaha of having the ac here so plymouth should be back to it’s normal ‘rough old slapper’ of a city !.
If you have never been then the hoe can be nice on a good day.

Some of the nearby towns are a lot nicer though, of the moorland towns tavistock is probably the prettiest with an older area, after that the smaller coastal towns like looe and fowey are worth a visit.

Walking–dartmoor is right outside our back door (woolwell) and is great walking country but can be confusing navigationally especially in cack weather. If you fancy it let me know and i can point out a couple of routes that handrail major features.

The south west coast path has lots of really nice day walk sections, i would reccomend :
Immediately next to plymouth the section from mt edgecombe house out to the villages of kingsand/cawsand and the whole of whitsand bay–whitsand at low tide is a really nice beach to splash along.
Thinking of whitsand/rame there is a reasonable campsite/caravan park at rame jus above the cliffs and right opposite the access to a neat quirky cafe (cliff top cafe) which is a great place to stop and has access down the cliff to the beach (we spend quite a bit of time out there).

Further west the section from looe going west to polperro is really nice walking as is the next section ,polperro–polruan/fowey.
In the same area is lanhydrock house now run by the nt and of course the eden project is probably worth a look at.

Further west (west of falmouth) the helford river area is very pretty/pretty and just near that is the lizard which is totally different ie rugged and really good walking.
Much further west around lands end gets really wild in parts–after that it’s a long swim to the next bit.

History–quite a few stone age sites further down in cornwall, mainly the remains of burial chambers.

EDIT.
(just realised that this should have been a pm, not sure how relevant any of the above would be to most folks on site)
Will pm my details in case we can meet up.

yeah nice squats. i think it is great how you hold your form, grit your teeth, and make that weight move up.

Cav - Here a 200 mile trip is considered long. You guys drive that to get a Pizza.

Alexus - Thanks

BN - Thanks a lot. I got your post just before I left. We visited Port Isaac, Padstowe, St Ives, Bodmin, Penzance and Mousehole. Did some sightseeing, a couple of walks and a bike ride. We were aiming to get to Fowey too, but ran out of time. Tried to fit too much in I think. Weather was brilliant and stayed at some really nice, quiet CLs.

Squat w/u to daily max

220 lbs x 3
286 lbs x 2
308 lbs x 1
330 lbs x 1
352 lbs x 1
374 lbs x 1

Back off set @ 286 lbs x 5*

RDLs @ 286 lbs x 7-7-7

Push Ups (bw) 25-20-20-15-10 (supersetted with) Pull Ups (bw) 5-5-5-5-5

EZ Curls “21s” @ 55 lbs x 21

*Was going to do a couple of back off sets, but my adductors started to cramp up a bit so I stopped.

Kept a few reps back on RDLs too because it was my first w/o back.

Haven’t done “21s” for 15 years probably. That exercise was responsible for taking my “GUNZ” from a pathetic 12" up to a jaw dropping 14" back in the day.

Was going to do 3 sets, but after the pull ups one set was enough. Couldn’t even touch my hand to my face afterwards because of the pump!

CRAMPTASTIC!!

Plan is to squat and do push ups and pull ups daily.

Nice squatting.

You know I better you are the sort of person who would thrive on a smolov cycle…

Now look who the crazy bastard is…you’ll be high repping in no time…feel the force!!

Au contraire! We have our pizzas delivered!

Great idea, think I’ll try some tomorrow on my arm day.

good squats on both days-

such good form nice work

glad the trip was nice, we went from wet summer
to a three to four day blast of hot hot weather
and now its freezing.

Joe - I think there’s a name for this sort of psychological behaviour where we see our own traits in others. Is it called projection? something like that. I think in fact it’s YOU who subconsciously wants to do Smolov. Am I right? Hmmmm?

OG - High frequency, not high reps. I’m not quite as doolally as you…yet!

Cav - Have they ever shown Blackadder on the BBC over there? (a comedy starring Rowan Atkinson) because I can’t read the words Au contraire without thinking of Stephen Fry revealing a pair of large, gold comedy breasts while saying “au contraire Blackadder”. IF you haven’t it will mean nothing, but any Brit will know exactly what I mean.

Kev - Thanks. We’ve just had a 30c day in October (it didn’t get that hot all summer) and now there’s talk of snow by the end of the week in Scotland. Crazy weather.

04/10/2011

A.M Bike Ride - 12.5 miles, leisurely with the missus.

P.M

w/u to daily squat max of 374 lbs x 1

Squat @ 286 lbs x 2 x 7 reps

GHR @ bw x 2 x 8 reps

Push Ups (bw) x 25-25-21-18-12 (101 reps)

supersetted with

Pull Ups (bw) x 5-5-6-6-6 (28 reps)

Triceps really sore, but didn’t stop me making good increases over yesterday. Squats were easier too.

You must be of the same generation that sees life through a certain ‘humour filter’

We have many situations in the hospital that seem to call for something similar :

eg when it’s going tits up in the icu ‘houston we have a problem’

on ‘experts’ : he’s not the messiah…he’s just a naughty boy !

during ‘situations’ : i have a cunning plan !

etc

“Doolally”? Is that the correct spelling? I’m going to steal that, so being obsessive about such things, I want to make certain.

And Farmer, turnabout is fair play when “being projected”, so I think every time you post in Joe’s log from now on, you should randomly sprinkle in the word Smolov, you know, a little bit of subliminal messaging…

nice work

I forgot about Black Adder, I think I still might have some on VHS. Only I don’t have a VHS player any more.

Yes, they have shown Black Adder here, but I never seemed to catch it. Have watched a number of Brit shows, though, it’s my only hope of understanding you guys.

Speaking of reruns, one TV station here specializes in old American shows. I never miss MAS*H, and they just started Batman, Lost in Space, and the original Star Trek.

Black adder is some funny ass shit

I need to google up some now
thanks

ps nice work

Most excellent squatting Brett. Totally agree about how much cardio/GPP help recovery, haven’t been doing much lately and everything is telling me about it.

Thanks for the comments folks.

RDLs

132 lbs x 10
220 lbs x 5
308 lbs x 10-10-10

Push Ups (bw) x 25-25-25-20-20 (125)

supersetted with

Pull Ups (bw) x 6-6-6-6-5 (29)

I’ve decided to alternate squats and RDLs instead of squatting every day.

I think I’m going to trademark my everyday arm routine. Granted, it’s A LOT like Chad Waterbury’s 60 day challenge except it has one important difference, you don’t increase by a rep a day, you increase by as many reps as possible! Clever eh?

I’m going to call it the “Unsustainable Progression System”.

I’ve thought of the catchline for the infomercial too.

“I genuinely believe this is the simplest and most effective system yet for developing elbow tendonitis or your money back!”

Oooooooo, if you put a greased up, spread-eagled, airbrushed chick with double D implants in the infomercial I’ll buy a copy.
